SEPTEMBER 2006 NEWS

HOSOI NEWS – Quiksilver has announced that the legendary Christian Hosoi and the rest of the Quiksilver skate team will tour the country premiering the new documentary ‘Rising Son, The Legend of Skateboarder Christian Hosoi.’ The eight-city tour will feature free theater and outdoor screenings of the film as well as demos and signings by Hosoi, Arto Saari, Stefan Janoski, Omar Hassan, Reese Forbes, Kyle Leeper, Dylan Reider, Omar Salazar, Eric Fletcher, and others. This is truly a Quiksilver happening marked by many firsts. The tour will be Hosoi’s first national tour since being released from prison in 2004. It will be the first time in over 10 years that fans will be able to see Hosoi back where he belongs: on a skateboard. And it will be the first time Quiksilver’s entire skate team, including the hottest up-and-comers and the most established legends, will be skating in demos and undercover at the nation’s most famous skate spots. Most importantly, this will be the first time fans will be able to view ‘Rising Son, The Legend of Skateboarder Christian Hosoi’ and experience this inside look into the rise, fall and rebirth of a true skateboarding pioneer and legend. Directed by Cesario ‘Block’ Montano, written by Peter Alton, and narrated by Dennis Hopper, the 90 minute film will be released on DVD in November and will be available in skate shops, video stores, and other better entertainment distributors around the world. www.quiksilver.com/risingson. DOWN FOR LIFE – a letter from Brian Kelly – Alabama skateboarding Pro Legend Pat Wachter contacted me about sponsoring a ‘Pro-Contest’ at Veterans Skate Park in Alabaster, Alabama. It’s been well over a decade since there was a professional skateboarding contest held in Alabama. Pat has personally offered $1000.00 for first place prize money. Pat has offered this generous contribution in an effort to return professional skateboarding to Alabama and to give back to an industry that allowed him to have the opportunities in his life and times as a pro-skateboarder. Pat Wachter’s generous sprit to give back the love and provide future opportunities for skateboarding is exactly the type of energy skateboarding could use more of. Of course, $1000 dollars wouldn’t get the attention of many in the professional ranks today, but it’s a great place to start. Please join us in our effort to bring professional skateboarding back to Alabama by contributing to the event and igniting a flame that has long lingered. All contribution’s our greatly appreciated and contributors will receive advertising at the event in an effort to help raise the prize money that would entice the professional skateboarding community. Best Regards, Brian Kelly – Ride Skateboards at Veterans Skate Park. http://www.rideskateboards.com

AREA 51 UPDATE – The guy’s from Area51 have been working like maniacs the past months. Diagonal birch layers everywhere. Bowl, street, mini, floor and platforms are all birch wood. The Bowl did not change exept for bigger platform. The miniramp is huge. The streetcourse has too much to offer. It’s fast and has some new creations which looks very attractive to hit. There is a balcony over the whole length of the park from where you have a perfect overview. The bar is big and something you don’t want to leave after a few beers. Next to the bar there is another hall which is the partyhall. On September 22nd the new Area51 skatepark will open its doors to the rolling public. The brand new indoor skatepark is currently being built at the Strijp S estate near Eindhovens city centre. It will offer everything the old Area51 skatepark had to
offer and so much more. Skateboard Federation Netherlands will soon organize 2 big events here; October 14-15 Globe BowlBash. November 4-5 Dutch Championships. For more go to www.area51skatepark.nl and www.skateboardfederatie.nl.
