SUN VALLEY MASSACRE 2004 CONTEST OVERVIEW

by Dan Levy

‘It was like that Rolling Stones concert when it was being roadied by the Hell’s Angels.’ – Lance Mountain

It was a contest that will go down in history, as some of the world’s best pool destroyers converged on the legendary Pink Motel in Sun Valley for one night of crushing grinds, gravity defying airs, lengthy carves, and a barrage of creative tricks.

The first contest of the night was the Z-Cult Longest Carve (frontside). After much discussion of the starting block, and a majority skater’s vote decision, Eddie Reategui claimed first place. Aaron Murray, Chris Cook, and ‘Peewee’ were hot on his heels. Reatigui’s record now stands at 20′ 6′.

Next up was the Bulldog Skates Longest Grind (frontside) as the coping fell victim to an impressive 10 1/2 of it’s un-sauced blocks being grinded down by ‘Peewee’ for the win. Jake Piasecki, Dave Reul, Chaz Pineda and Brad Edwards all were within striking distance.

The pool really heated up for the Black Label/Red Kross Highest Air contest as Jake Piasecki sailed 5′ above the Pink coping landing him 1st place. Chaz Pineda, and Gavin Obayashi gave him a run for his money, as they earned 2nd and 3rd place honors respectively. Gavin’s skating was so ballistic that he dislocated his finger as he attempted a 5’4′ blaster.

The Firm’s Best Trick contest followed as the pool hosted some epic maneuvers during one of the most heated snake sessions ever witnessed. At one point, there were five riders in the pool at the same time and somehow none of them collided. It was completely amazing and the crowd roared as they all rolled away clean. During the Best Trick chaos, Jimmy ‘The Greek’ threw down a bag of tricks including a padless frontside invert with his wheels hitting the coping on the way in as he rolled away clean followed by a frontside ollie in the shallow end earning him the title. Honorable mentions in the Best Trick contest included Danny Minnik’s blunt to fakie, Chaz Pineda’s frontside 5-0 grind to revert over the light, Eric Britton’s stylish backside smith grind, Jake Piasecki’s huge stalefish grab over the light, and Dave Reul’s supersonic layback airs.

There was an unofficial lipslide contest happening as Aaron Astorga, ‘Peewee’, Tuma, and Eddie Reategui were sliding well over five blocks.

The contest ended at 10:45 p.m. and the winners were announced. Jeff Ho selected the Zephyr MVP of the night, Chaz Pineda, who became an honorary member of the Zephyr competition team and was awarded a competition team shirt, a custom made Zephyr board, $100 and the MVP trophy. Stay tuned for the entire story and photo documentation in the upcoming issue.

Each contest winner received $100 and a Sun Valley Massacre trophy thanks to the sponsors of the contest: Z-Cult Skateboards, Bulldog Skates, The Firm, Jeff Ho/Zephyr and Black Label/Red Kross.

‘It had the energy of what a good clean competition and fun are all about. Those that were there, were there to skate. It’s how you really want an event like this to be. It wasn’t a bunch of wannabe kooks. It was solid and it was core. It was about the skating.’ – Jeff Ho / Zephyr Productions

Special thanks to Jesse Martinez, Lance Lemond, Orion Comstock and Aaron Murray for judging the contest. – PHOTO BY DAN LEVY
