SUICIDE MACHINES
BY ROBIN FLEMING
The name was originally inspired by Jack Kevorkian.
Tell me about the band’s name?
The name was originally inspired by Jack Kevorkian. We were Jack Kevorkian and the Suicide Machines. There was a lot of problems with using his name. It was a little too funny. We’ve got serious songs and silly songs, I think that’s pretty healthy. But, when we were putting our first record out, we called his lawyer and asked to use his name, but they said no. It would have caused a little billing problem. But, I think he’s flattered. We support what he does. It was a little bit of Michigan history too.
How do you think the fickle ‘punk’ kids are going to react to your new look and sound?
In Detroit we have an older and younger crowd. I hope that the kids who come to our shows are pretty open-minded. I respect the people who come to our shows. I think that even if kids pick it up and don’t like it, they may revisit it in years to come. We’ve all done that.
How did you record this record?
We demoed about 30 songs. There are some rockers that didn’t make it, but they may show up somewhere, like a benefit comp.
What do you listen to on the road?
Avail, that’s mandatory. A little emo, some metal, rap. I can survive as long as I’ve got a book and a skateboard, I’m set.
Where’s your favorite cities to play?
Detroit, Chicago, New York.
Any last words?
Think for yourself. Don’t try to change the world, you gotta change yourself first.
