WAVERIDERS PREMIERE – MARCH 16, 2010 presented by Juice Magazine and Arbor at Arbor Collective. 102 Washington Blvd, Venice, CA. Detailing the unlikely Irish roots of the worldwide surfing phenomenon, Conroy showcases the world-class surfing destinations off the northwest coast of Ireland. The story unfolds via the inspirational and ultimately tragic history of Irish/Hawaiian legendary waterman George Freeth, who was responsible for the rebirth of this sport of Hawaiian kings in the early 20th century, and is credited as the “Father of Modern Surfing”. This ocean-adventure pays tribute to Freeth’s forgotten legacy; as the world’s first lifeguard and a skillful surfer, he crossed oceans to share what would become a contagious fervor for the sport.
With its distinguished cast of world-renowned surfers, WAVERIDERS journeys from Hawaii to California and back to Ireland’s shores following Freeth’s wave of influence. Renowned British and Irish surfers link up with world champion Kelly Slater, soul surfer Kevin Naughton, and the celebrated Malloy brothers to ride some of the most exciting surf ever seen on Ireland’s shores, along with internationally recognized surfers like Richie Fitzgerald, Gabe Davies, Craig Peterson, and Rabbit Kikai. Waveriders’ exploration reaches a spectacular climax when the surfers conquer the biggest swell ever ridden in Ireland, as they ride monster waves reaching heights of over fifty feet.
From first time feature director Joel Conroy, WAVERIDERS has won awards including Best Feature Documentary at the 2009 Irish Film and TV Awards as well as the Audience Award at the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival. After presenting the film with its prestigious Best Doc title, Surfer Magazine praised, “Waveriders’ takes on surf culture from an Irish perspective that may have been the most gripping and artful story of the bunch”. Looking at surfing through an international lens, WAVERIDERS illuminates a heartfelt and adventurous story that unifies generations of surfers who share a competitive spirit and a common passion for a good swell.
