Back in the Roman Coliseum days sporting events consisted of blood, sweat, and usually the death of one of the competitors. In today’s modern world, death is not usually what determines the victor, however the blood and sweat are still required. In the realm of skateboarding, bowl riding seems to emulate this concept the most and for the spectators it’s the most entertaining. The stadium seating on all four sides of the concrete pit at the Peoria Skatepark in Arizona, along with the elevated judge’s stand enhanced the adrenaline of the participating riders. The format was jam, meaning drop in and commit or end up a spectator on the bench. At any given moment there were at least two warriors in the pit painting unthinkable lines in a state of complete chaos. The near death collisions are constant. The first annual Kronik Energy Desert Dog Bowl Bash sponsored by Scion consisted of a Deathrace, a jam format bowl contest, some partying, some injuries and a lot of fun. For those of you reading this, I do not have to tell you bowl skating is one of the most amazing aspects of skateboarding that you can witness. The action is non-stop as two to five riders are claiming ownership of the cement hips and lips at any given moment. To win a contest like this you have to have a lot of commitment, a ton of board control and a little bit of insanity. The atmosphere in this contest was a constant state of anticipation. Every run was better than the next and every near collision was closer and more consequential. The best part of the contest was at the end when everyone had their last runs and the sun was on its way down. Everyone who rode kind of looked around and realized they’d all won and the judging didn’t mean anything because they all survived and conquered. This is what keeps the spirit alive in our world and whatever your opinions are of contests, there’s a right way to do it and bowl skating is definitely one of them. Props to all the sponsors for kicking down cash for skateboarders to have a good time. See you next year.
