Photo by Gary Leonard<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 432-page tome is published in Rome by\u00a0<strong>DRAGO PUBLISHER<\/strong>. Europe is welcoming the collective, eager to embrace the cultural m\u00e9lange that the West Coast of the United States offers and that the California Locos manifest. \u201cThis is a union between the City of God (Rome) and the City of Angels (L.A.)!\u201d said publisher Paulo von Vacano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her 5,000 word essay,\u00a0<strong>RIDING THE WAVE OF REBELLION \u2014 CALIFORNIA LOCOS AND THE \u201cBIRTH OF NOW\u201d<\/strong>, art historian Michelle Deziel Hernandez observes \u201cAsymmetrical and authentic, the California Locos are artists who create their works which are deeply rooted in their experiences growing up and living in the various neighborhoods and subcultures of postwar Los Angeles.\u201d Her comprehension of the historical narrative within Southern California serves to contextualize where the Locos fall on the art timeline, \u201cWith decades of success behind them and as a reimagined L.A. Cool School, they offer another stop on L.A.\u2019s long, chaotic and illustrious art historical continuum.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The book launch opens June 17 at\u00a0<strong>EASTERN PROJECTS<\/strong>\u00a0in L.A.\u2019s Chinatown and marks the first of several Locos events happening in Los Angeles this summer and fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a return to the scene of the crime after their blockbuster opening here at Eastern Projects in 2017. I am honored to host this book launch event,\u201d said Eastern\u2019s Rigo Jimenez. Photo by Gary Leonard<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2023 is the tenth anniversary of the\u00a0<strong>CALIFORNIA LOCOS<\/strong>\u00a0and sets the stage for the quintet to tour European museums in a traveling retrospective of recent and historic works by all members of the group beginning with an exhibit at the\u00a0<strong>MUSEUM OF ROME<\/strong>\u00a0in April of 2024. \u201cWe have made our points clear on the West Coast,\u201d Tourj\u00e9 mused about his book, \u201cWe\u2019ve done art shows and fairs in Miami and up the East Coast. It has been a great run, everyone here gets it, but Europeans revere California\u2019s cultural ethos, especially now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tourj\u00e9\u2019s many recent encounters with European curators and cognoscenti has affirmed that Europe appreciates how the Locos refine the essence of the California experience, \u201cThe five of us have an eclectic legacy. We mix culture and lifestyle as art. That reinvents how the West Coast is seen in foreign lands and is why the Locos have to take our show on the road.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The summer events coincide with a Jeffrey Deitch-curated Hong Kong exhibition of U.S. street culture \u201cThe City as Studio\u201d that features California Loco Chaz Boj\u00f3rquez. The larger art world\u2019s embrace of the Locos\u2019 aesthetic is apparent in the many museums showing and collecting their work, such as LACMA, the Smithsonian, Orange County Museum of Art, Laguna Art Museum, the Milwaukee Art Center and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWest Coast culture has always been appreciated in Europe, from the jazzers to Hendrix to punk rock and the avant-garde\u201d observed Loco member Norton Wisdom, \u201cso it looks like history will repeat for the Locos!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first 100 limited edition signed\u00a0<strong>CALIFORNIA LOCOS<\/strong>\u00a0books are available at\u00a0<strong>EASTERN PROJECTS<\/strong>\u00a0for $100 on a first come, first served basis at the June 17 launch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>WHAT:<\/strong>\u00a0Book release of CALIFORNIA LOCOS RENAISSANCE AND REBELLION\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>WHEN:<\/strong>\u00a0Saturday, June 17, 2023,<br \/>4-8pm,\u00a0<br \/>EASTERN PROJECTS GALLERY<br \/>900 N.
