COLE PERERA INTERVIEW BY DAN LEVY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is it like skating for Powell? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a dream come true. I used to skate C.A.S.L. competitions and I\u2019d always win the Powell Games of S.K.A.T.E. and best tricks and I\u2019d always win Powell decks and I\u2019d be skating them month by month. Deville was at one of the contests and he gave me a board and I went to skate with him the next day and here I am now. It\u2019s pretty crazy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are some of your favorite things about skateboarding?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s the freedom. There are no rules to it at all. You can do anything you want, any trick you want, no matter how hard it is or how easy it is. You can express the way you skate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where do you come from?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I come from Bell Gardens, California. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is your favorite band to listen to?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I love System of A Down, Misfits, Sublime, Arctic Monkeys, Joy Division, the Doors, Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix\u2026 I could keep going. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s a good variety. What has been the best skate session you ever had?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was probably the first time ever skating with the Powell team. I pissed blood. They took me to some gnarly spot. It was a five flat six in UCI and I was just sending it for the first time with the Powell crew. I kickflipped it and then I tried to go for a varial flip and I kept sticking it every try. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gnar. Were your aspirations in life to become a professional skateboarder?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve always thought about skateboarding ever since I was little. They were like, \u201cWhat do you want to do when you grow up?\u201d I would write, \u201cProfessional skateboarder.\u201d It\u2019s crazy. I\u2019m trying to pursue it at its fullest potential now and I just turned amateur this year and got a photo in Thrasher by Deville, so I\u2019m very grateful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rad! Was that your first photo in a mag?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yeah. That was my first photo ever. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What was that feeing like?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was so surreal. I couldn\u2019t process it for a while, even to be amateur. I was like, \u201cI\u2019m actually doing this.\u201d My parents liked it, but my father thought of it more like a hobby. He was like, \u201cYou need to get a job and go to college.\u201d Then he saw that I got that photo in a magazine and I\u2019ve been getting all of these boxes of product and he can\u2019t believe it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the freedom. There are no rules to it at all. You can do anything you want, any trick you want, no matter how hard it is or how easy it is. You can express the way you skate.\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s awesome.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s such a trip. I think about it a lot when I\u2019m just chilling. On the nights I can\u2019t sleep, I\u2019m thinking, \u201cDamn!\u201d I\u2019m really grateful for everyone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where would you like to travel to skate?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barcelona. Paris. Tokyo. Argentina. Africa. Let\u2019s go everywhere. Alaska. Anywhere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s a good list. If you could have one super power, what would it be?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019d be invisible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don\u2019t know. I could be hiding in the corner and not be seen. I\u2019d be all low-key and stealth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That could put you in some interesting situations. What do you think your biggest challenge in life is? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just enjoying life is the biggest challenge every day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why is that challenging for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s just the way that I grew up and the aspects of life that I\u2019ve been around and the things I\u2019ve seen and the things I\u2019ve been through. You just have to push and be a soldier and push through to better days. Living life can be heavy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think that lends itself to what you were saying about skateboarding and freedom.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yeah. It brings so much freedom to everybody. I love seeing everyone skate, from skating curbs to skating pools and pyramids and ramps and rails, and the variety of tricks. I love the whole aspect of skateboarding. It makes me happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Was Powell your first legit sponsor?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yeah. I was sponsored by a little board company in Inglewood called Barely Legal Skateboards and I jumped off straight to Powell, gratefully. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What other sponsors do you have?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ace Trucks, Fly Paper, Telivistar, Bones Wheels, Bones Bearings, Footprint Insoles and Footwear and Mainline Skate Shop. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s tight. What do you want your legacy to be?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I want to be known as the happiest dude. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s a really good legacy to have. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yeah. I want people to think, \u201cCole is always happy, always with a smile and never negative.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the one thing that you\u2019ve laid down on your skateboard that you\u2019re most proud of? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was probably disco heeling the Rose Garden set and double flipping the Hollywood 12, paying        homage to Billy Marks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You double flipped that? That\u2019s gnarly.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yeah. It was for the Powell YouTube. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wow. Is Billy Marks your favorite?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yeah. I like Billy Marks and Tom Penny. I get a lot of inspiration by them, and Jamie Thomas, Chris Joslin, Ocean Howell, Tosh Townend and Bobby Puleo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kalis, Wenning, Pappalardo\u2026 I could keep going. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wenning\u2019s 5-0s are stupid. How do you not move? I don\u2019t get it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right. In the fat DC\u2019s. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moon boots and no movement on the 5-0.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yeah. His Photosynthesis, and Jason Dill and AVE have been a big inspiration on me, and Andrew Reynolds for sure. I love jumping off stairs.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sick! If you were asked to describe your style, how would you describe it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tom Penny mixed with Chris Joslin. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those are big shoes. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I like big pants. [Laughs]<\/p>\n\n\n\n
