As kids, we\u2019d never been out of New England and here we are&nbsp;\u2013we\u2019ve made ten records and have been all over the globe. If there\u2019s a message to this album, it\u2019s \u2018put your fist up and play it loud.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ufeffOver the last two years, following a surgery, bassist\/co-lead vocalist&nbsp;<strong>Casey<\/strong>&nbsp;stopped playing, passing bass duties to longtime friend and road crew member&nbsp;<strong>Kevin Rheault<\/strong>. With&nbsp;<strong>Casey<\/strong>&nbsp;off his leash and free to roam the front of the stage with co-lead vocalist&nbsp;<strong>Al Barr<\/strong>, a new, powerful dynamic has ignited between the two. As they have since 1996, they began throwing down rousing\u00a0tracks\u00a0that span the gap from punk rock ragers\u00a0to melodic, Irish-inspired tunes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Working out of Q Division Studios in Somerville, MA with longtime producer Ted Hutt, they recorded&nbsp;<strong><em>Turn Up That Dial&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>in shifts of two members at a time. For the final weeks of recording, Hutt ran the sessions via video conference from his studio in LA. For background vocals, the guys set up separate mics in five different rooms so they could all simultaneously sing safely. \u201cWe were all looking at each other out the window, at least,\u201d recalls&nbsp;<strong>Casey<\/strong>.<s>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/s><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dropkick Murphys<\/strong>\u00a0steamrolled their way through the album with a string of anthems, starting with the title track.\u00a0<strong>\u201cTurn Up That Dial\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0lays bare the whole point of the collection in the first verse: \u201c<em>You\u2019re my inspiration, you got something to say \/Now turn up that dial \u2018til it takes me away.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>It\u2019s easy to imagine the band members thinking back to their teenage selves: blasting The Clash on a Walkman, feeling their favorite bands were sticking up for them more than anyone else in the world. This album is fueled by those bands that captured the energy of the streets, distilled life\u2019s complexities to raging choruses, and were constant companions.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Dropkick Murphys &quot;Middle Finger&quot; (official audio)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/L_0v8bnpnP8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen title=\"Dropkick Murphys \"Middle Finger\" (official audio)\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On the new single&nbsp;<strong>\u201cMiddle Finger,\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>Al Barr<\/strong>&nbsp;spits out the verses with an evil, tongue-in-cheek grin, as the track explodes into the chorus,&nbsp;<em>\u201cI could never keep that middle finger down.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;Not one to shirk responsibility,&nbsp;<strong>Casey<\/strong>&nbsp;offers this reflection: \u201cThinking of my younger days, I made things a lot harder for myself than they needed to be \u2013 and still pay for some of those mistakes now.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The band closes the album with a tribute to\u00a0<strong>Al\u2019<\/strong>s late father Woody Barr on the moving tribute\u00a0<strong>\u201cI Wish You Were Here<\/strong>.<strong>\u201d<em>Turn Up That Dial<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0waves goodbye with accordion, bagpipes, and a drum march. \u201c<strong>Al<\/strong>\u2019s dad was just an incredible man,\u201d\u00a0<strong>Casey<\/strong>\u00a0explains.<em>\u00a0<\/em>\u201cHe and\u00a0<strong>Al<\/strong>\u00a0had a very special bond. To watch\u00a0<strong>Al<\/strong>\u00a0grieve his death was heartbreaking. He persevered through it, even when we had to go back on the road, away from family. He kept his head held high. We\u2019ve never ended an album with a slow song, but we had to end it with a tip of the cap to pay our respects to Woody and so many others. Our record collections and playlists carry us through any hardships, adversities, and trouble the world throws our way. When you press play, the pain just goes away. It\u2019s why we listen in the first place. And that\u2019s what&nbsp;<strong>Dropkick Murphys&nbsp;<\/strong>set out to do \u2013 and definitely accomplished \u2013 on the new album&nbsp;<strong><em>Turn Up That Dial<\/em><\/strong>. They boot in the front door of 2021 with a record that punches you square in the face and says, in the words of&nbsp;<strong>Ken Casey<\/strong>, \u201cGet up, get out of those sweatpants you\u2019ve been wearing for the last year&#8230;better times are ahead \u2013 LET\u2019S F-in\u2019 GO!!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve all done plenty of lamenting, so the main goal was to keep this fun,\u201d\u00a0<strong>Casey<\/strong><em>\u00a0<\/em>leaves off. \u201cThe darker the times got, the harder we fought to uplift with this music. Whatever we\u2019re potentially giving to fans, trust me, they\u2019re giving it to us tenfold.
