The single featured the tracks\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/52eLKoTrAMngw1wSzwMZoX\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>\u2018Look Left\u2019<\/b><\/span><\/a><b>\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0<b>\u2018<\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/6q7YpHcbHOUu2izXm7XBAB\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Devil In Disguise<\/b><\/span><\/a><b>\u2019<\/b>, two songs that perfectly represent the album&#8217;s many shifting moods and styles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Recorded by legendary producer\u00a0<b>Tony Visconti<\/b>, \u2018Evil Spirits\u2019 is the result of a frantic, high-energy burst of creativity at Atomic Sound studios in Brooklyn in October of 2017, with \u2018Black Album\u2019 and \u2018Strawberries\u2019-era bassist\u00a0<b>Paul Gray<\/b>\u00a0back in the fold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Select shows in the Northwest have just been added, following their headline slot at Burger Boogaloo in Oakland\u00a0July 1st.\u00a0 A US tour will be announced at a later date (details forthcoming).<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nxAiukuKL34\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><b>&#8216;EVIL SPIRITS\u2019- TRACK BY TRACK:<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s3\"><b>\u2018<\/b><\/span><b>Standing On The Edge Of\u00a0Tomorrow\u2019 (<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nxAiukuKL34\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>watch video<\/b><\/span><\/a><b>)<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s4\">Up-to-the-minute garage psychedelia that gallops like Scott Walker\u2019s \u2018The Seventh Seal\u2019, amid ominous \u2018dies irae\u2019 chorale and mucho post-millennial frustration. Vanian:\u00a0<\/span>\u201cAn optimistic song even though it is about a dark subject. In a world obsessed by \u2018self\u2019, this is a cry for humanity to recognize its humanity, before it\u2019s too late. There is a strong influence of Joe Meek here: \u2018Telstar\u2019 was a glorious song about the opportunities of the future. I\u2019d like to think that \u2018SOTEOT\u2019 reflects a similar sentiment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>\u2018The Devil In Disguise\u2019 (<\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/6q7YpHcbHOUu2izXm7XBAB\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>listen<\/b><\/span><\/a><b>)<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Another energetic garage-punk monster, replete with Monty Oxy Moron\u2019s era-specific Farfisa organ. Pinch:\u00a0\u201cPeople gravitate towards blaming individuals rather than the systems they are part of. Figureheads are only puppets. It\u2019s the puppet masters we should be concerned about. The enemy of our enemy is our friend, apparently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>\u2018We\u2019re So Nice\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWhere there\u2019s dispute you\u2019ll find us there\u2026\u201d Sensible\u2019s broadside against Anglo-American imperialist meddling around the world bops along gleefully on a Motown beat amid a deluge of melodic excellence. Sensible: \u201cWith all that we know about the Iraq war, and its consequences, does anyone still think we were the \u2018heroes\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>\u2018Look Left\u2019 (<\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/52eLKoTrAMngw1wSzwMZoX\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>listen<\/b><\/span><\/a><b>)<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Sugar coated mind grenade, addressing post-millennial society\u2019s \u201cmedia-induced coma\u201d Vanian: \u201cThe weird thing about Pinch is, he listens to the most obnoxious music a lot of the time \u2013 all the real hardcore punk stuff \u2013 and he a very loud drummer, too, but then he goes and writes this great big show tune \u2013 like a massive ensemble cast coming on to sing at the end of the play!\u201d\u00a0Pinch: \u201cWhile everybody&#8217;s looking left, what the hell is happening right?\u00a0Tough subject matter is easier to digest when coated in honey rather than vinegar and the message in this song is so important, I couldn\u2019t risk it being a throw away aggro punk tune that was immediately overlooked. I see it more as a love song to the human race. The future is here, and until you awaken your mind, I\u2019ll wait for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>\u2018Evil Spirits\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Fantastically searching, in the best sense \u2018progressive\u2019, rocker, with vague echoes of The Who\u2019s \u2018Magic Bus\u2019 and The Rolling Stones\u2019 \u2018Can\u2019t You Hear Me Knocking\u2019, and some commensurately exploratory soloing from Sensible. An urgently free-spirited riposte to today\u2019s political stasis. Sensible: \u201cWhoever you vote for, nothing changes. Labour or Tory, two cheeks of same bum.\u201d\u00a0Vanian: \u201cThe Who are never far away from The Damned\u2019s sound. We\u2019ve had some big noses in this band, too. I suppose there are some parallels between us, because they were a high-energy band, too, but then Pete started writing his rock-opera stuff, stretching out, looking for different ways of writing. Queen did the same sort of thing as well \u2013 we\u2019re one of those bands whose music can cover different genres of music, within one song.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>\u2018Shadow Evocation\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s4\">Quintessential Vanianism, about espousing the night and finding a better way forward than \u201cchasing ghosts of the past\u201d. Features acrobatic backing vocals from American singer-songwriter Kristeen Young. Vanian:\u00a0<\/span>\u201dKristeen has a remarkable vocal range reminiscent of Yma Sumac [1950\u2019s Peruvian-American soprano]. Her singing at the end of the song was originally played on a Theramin but once Kristeen sang the part, there was no need for the instrument anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>\u2018Sonar Deceit\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Another garage-psych belter, propelled by a jaunty His Latest Flame-style bassline. \u201cWhat makes a fish desert the sea?\u201d ponders the Captain in this hard-hitting critique of\u00a0<span class=\"s5\">whales and dolphins being driven insane by bombardment by deafening sonar<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Sensible: \u201cWhat could it possibly be that drives whales and dolphins to prostrate themselves on beaches around the world?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>\u2018Procrastination\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Noel Coward-esque study of creative deferral, with more mid-\u201960s Farfisa from Mr Oxy Moron. Sensible: \u201cOne of Monty\u2019s, this one. A bit of self-analysis here: what could be the reason that this band\u2019s last album was recorded back in 2008? It\u2019s good to be able to laugh at yourself \u2013 well, at least I think he\u2019s talking about himself there\u2026 Isn\u2019t he? Or is it me? Blimey!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>\u2018Daily Liar\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Co-written by Sensible (tune) and Vanian (lyric), another anger-fuelled barnstormer, with a Kinksian introductory fanfare, a driving beat, and a stirring melodic ascent. All together now: say \u201cno, no, no\u2026no-no\u201d to media misinformation! Sensible:\u00a0\u201cFor his own selfish reasons, Trump started a discussion about \u2018fake news\u2019, but it\u2019s one that some might say has been long overdue. Not a pinch of salt required \u2013 you need a whole cellar of the stuff these days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>\u2018I Don\u2019t Care\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Punk heedlessness rebooted as a triptych of political disaffection, spanning moody piano balladry, Who-y explosiveness, and nocturnal jazz<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s4\">Vanian:\u00a0<\/span>\u201cThis should have been a short song, perhaps only a minute long, written on a rainy afternoon in my study.
