\u201cThere was a\u00a0lot of energy flowing that day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Old shred\u00a0dogs licking wounds, young guns looking to step up and build a rep, and groms\u00a0feeding off the crowd stoke, mingling with mourners respectfully remembering a\u00a0fallen comrade, all came together on this day.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0legendary Dead Men ditch<\/a> in Vernon, British Columbia<\/a> began hosting skate events\u00a0in the ’80s. As the original Dead Men\u00a0crew moved on and gave over to the next generation, the hallowed concrete grounds\u00a0were preserved and maintained off and on through the decades.<\/p>\n

Fast\u00a0forward to September 2016; two of the ditch\u2019s early practitioners Sam<\/a> and Mike\u00a0McKinlay<\/a> conceived the idea to go back and defend their ditch victories from 28\u00a0years prior. With the date set and\u00a0sponsors secured, the hard and unforgiving lines of this altar to skating were\u00a0revived with new life.<\/p>\n

Arriving to\u00a0a morning of steady rain and dour faces peering from soaked hoodies the task\u00a0erecting a makeshift awning and drying the spot began. All hands were on deck and within 3 hours of\u00a0tarping, mopping and tiger torching the vessel<\/a> was ship shape and shred ready\u00a0for those who would arrive from Vernon,\u00a0Kelowna, Kamloops, Vancouver, Alberta, Washington\u00a0State and parts unknown.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0occasion itself took on particular meaning to each that attended and none were\u00a0disappointed. With an emphasis on old\u00a0skool style<\/a>, the skaters piloted shred sticks through through Boneless Ones,\u00a0lapped over grinds and Bert slides peppered with kickflip and varial variations\u00a0eliciting hearty responses from the many\u00a0onlookers.<\/p>\n

As if\u00a0formed as an antithesis to the recent Olympiss skateboard announcement, this\u00a0grass roots event reconfirmed the love of skating to some while inspiring\u00a0others to embrace a traditional approach to skateboarding all due to the\u00a0efforts of many hands that made\u00a0this day possible. Event sponsors included: Juice Mag<\/a>,\u00a0Skull\u00a0Skates<\/a>, Powell Peralta<\/a>, Barrier Kult<\/a>, Vans Off the Wall<\/a> and Okanagan Skate Co<\/a>.
