Professional skaters vied for a $20,000 prize purse, the biggest in women’s transition skating, in the Urban Remedy Bowl Bash and the PTA Vert Jam. Amateur skaters competed for prizes including a week at Woodward West camp, a custom-shaped surfboard and top-of-the-line skateboarding equipment.

Lizzie Armanto of Santa Monica, CA took top honors on the vert ramp and bowl, making her a three-time Pro Vert winner. Armanto said that EXPOSURE “has grown so much in the past three years in support, attendance, and the level of skating. Out of all three years competing in this event, this year I skated my personal best and look forward to doing that again.”

Close on her heels were Gaby Ponce, (of Tenafly NJ) who won the Movietickets “Flix for Trix” prize with a kickflip indy on vert and Julz Lynn, the 2013 World Cup Skateboarding Women’s Bowlriding champion, who took silver in Bowl.

Transworld Skateboarding said the EXPOSURE event was proof that “there’s a serious revolution going on in women’s skateboarding.”

In addition to watching the top skaters on the bowl and halfpipe, over 50 of the attendees aged 2 – 53 took part in the free XS Learn-to-Skate Clinic. The clinic provided professional equipment and instruction to participants, 46 of which were female.

Skateboarding legend Steve Caballero celebrated his 50th birthday at EXPOSURE through the “Cabash,” a best frontside invert contest judged by Caballero himself. Contestants included pros Andy Macdonald, Nora Vasconcellos and Josh Rodriguez, but the ones who performed the handplant variation best were Lizzie Armanto and Dominican Republic’s Daniel Cuervo.

Attendees lined up to get autographs signed by Daniel Cuervo, Adam Taylor, Steve Caballero, Andy Macdonald, Cara-Beth Burnside, Elliot Sloan, PLG, Josh Kerr, Josh Rodriguez, Mimi Knoop, Austin Poynter, Trey Wood and many other top action sports athletes.

Mike McGill, inventor of the McTwist, was a judge this year along with Aaron Astorga, Adrian Demain and Jean Rusen. McGill said he was honored to judge an “amazing group of skateboarders from all over the world.” McGill said that it was clear that they were all “living their dreams” through EXPOSURE.

The vendor village spread awareness about healthy living. EXPOSURE’s vendors featured whole-foods snacks such as Fruigees and Nii Bar as well as organic Kombucha by Living Tea and Mamma Chia in place of energy drinks. EXPOSURE helped to educate attendees through booths such as Boarding For Breast Cancer, Gould Academy and the Musical Theatre Foundation. Eco-friendly booths included Surfrider with their water-refill station and Mineral Fusion with environmentally safe beauty products. Attendees participated in auctions and raffles to help benefit Carol’s House.

Each year, EXPOSURE raises money for survivors of domestic violence. This year, a portion of proceeds went to Carol’s House, a local shelter that helps to provide residents with comprehensive social services to facilitate transition to healthier, happier and safer lives.

“With a large gap in government funding for domestic violence programs in San Diego this year, we couldn’t be more appreciative and thankful for the EXPOSURE event,” said Paul B. Thompson, Chief Executive Officer of Community Resource Center. “Our Carol’s House program and comprehensive domestic services continue to change the lives of those who have suffered abuse. Because of community members and events like EXPOSURE, we receive the critical support we need to continue our mission.”

EXPOSURE recognizes and thanks its major 2014 sponsors: True Nature Healing Arts, Camp Tanuga, Neal Mims Skate Academy, Planes, Trains + Automobiles, Urban Remedy, Bronze Buffalo Foundation, MC Construction Management, Inc., Sambazon, United States Air Force, Vox and XS Helmets.

Results

PRO BOWL FINAL:

1.
