October 8, 2014 (New York, NY) \u2013 Theatre Within, the grassroots non-profit dedicated to furthering the performing arts as a positive social force, today announced the guest artists for its 34th Annual John Lennon Tribute on Friday, December 5 at 8pm at Symphony Space in New York City.<\/p>\n
Rock icon Debbie Harry (Blondie) tops a stellar line-up featuring Kate Pierson (B-52s), David Johansen (NY Dolls, Buster Poindexter),\u00a0 Joan Osborne(six-time Tribute performer), Marshall Crenshaw, Amy Helm, Rich Pagano (Fab Faux) and Ben E. King, who along with Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller wrote the pop anthem Stand By Me, famously covered by John Lennon in 1975.<\/p>\n
In addition, legendary rock photographer Bob Gruen, who captured John Lennon\u2019s years in New York, will be honored for his artistry and charitable impact with the first ever John Lennon Real Love Award.<\/p>\n
\u201cI share Theatre Within\u2019s belief that music and the performing arts have a special power to bring people together and inspire us to make a positive difference,\u201d said Yoko Ono. \u201cIt\u2019s beautiful that the Tribute continues to have such a powerful impact in John\u2019s memory.\u201d<\/p>\n
In recent years, the Tribute has raised money to help feed the hungry, build music schools in the Third World and support Hurricane Sandy relief. Proceeds from this year will benefit Theatre Within\u2019s John Lennon Real Love Project, a new mobile songwriting program for children and teens undergoing long term medical treatment. The program launched in September and is ongoing at the Children\u2019s Hospital at Montefiore in the Bronx.<\/p>\n
Joe Raiola, the Tribute\u2019s creator\/producer, who is also Senior at MAD Magazine, says he\u2019s especially looking forward to Joan Osborne\u2019s set. At his suggestion Ms. Osborne will commemorate John Lennon\u2019s last live performance by playing the three songs that he sang with Elton John at Madison Square Garden on Thanksgiving night 40 years ago.<\/p>\n
