The Inertia is proud to announce the launch of its new documentary film series, an initiative that aims to tell the best stories in surfing. The first, 24-minute episode provides an intimate portrait of the mentality, risks and lifestyle associated with pursuing monstrous waves around the planet through the eyes of one of the world\u2019s most decorated big wave surfers, Greg Long. The film\u2019s title, Sine Qua Non, is a Latin phrase, which, roughly translated, means, \u201cWithout which, [there is] nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSine Qua Non: The Psychology of Big Wave Surfing with Greg Long\u201d is directed by Richard Yelland of Curtis Birch Inc., who most recently directed and produced Nike\u2019s 12 Miles North, the story of the first African American surfer. Yelland also produced \u201cFloating: The Nathan Gocke Story,\u201d which earned him Best Short Documentary at 2011 Cannes Film Festival’s American Pavilion Emerging Filmmaker Showcase.<\/p>\n
