Delicious.

Tell me about your earthquake experience (there was an earthquake late night/early morning of this show).
J: Alright, I was on a porch, intoxicated and all of a sudden everything starts shaking and I look over at some kids from LA and we looked at each other and we were like, ‘Uh, I think this is an earthquake’ and it started getting bigger and my friend Michelle was getting all excited and she was on the porch going, ‘Oh my God, this is fun.’ I was about to shit my pants and all I could think of was ‘I do not want to die in Los Angeles.’ We were in a hurricane on the East Coast and now an earthquake in LA.

Explain exactly what Reggie and the Full Effect is.
J: Reggie is a totally separate band that I do nothing but play in as do everyone else. I don’t write any of the songs, no one does except James, it’s his band, it’s his deal. I have nothing to do with it. I will never play a Reggie song at a Get Up Kids show. I will never play a Get Up Kids song at a Reggie show and if kids request it, then tough shit, that’s how it goes. I’m not bitter and I will play in Reggie but it’s two totally different bands. I don’t mean to sound like a dick but when kids yell ‘Play Reggie’, it’s like, ‘No.’

Where will you be on December 31, 1999?
J: In a basement locked up. We’ve all been talking about what we want to do. Probably a week before New Year’s we are going to figure out what we are going to do. I know I want to be close to my family and friends. I’m not afraid of the world ending, I’m just afraid of people going psycho and I don’t want to have to deal with them. I would never be in New York or Los Angeles or Chicago or anywhere like that.

You guys are always considered the nice guys that never talk shit. Tell me who sucks and why.
J: Taxes fucking suck. Canadian border guards fucking suck. They are dickheads. I love the Canadian people, they’re wonderful people, I love Canada, I don’t want to talk shit on Canada, but the Canadian border guards are all pissed off about South Park. Look, I didn’t make the movie. Yeah, it was funny, but take a joke. It wasn’t funny but my point is they’re pissed and it’s not our fault. We were just trying to play rock for the Canadian kids and they don’t like us very much.

What is it like having a bunch of underage girls wanting you?
J: I wish I was 15 again because I wasn’t very popular then. I had friends but I wasn’t Mr. Studmuffin, girl getter. Now girls like me, I wish I was 15. And I wish I lived in Arkansas. Girls never come up and talk to me so…

What’s the one question you always wanted to answer but no one will ask?
J: Questions about our record, our band or our songwriting.

TO ORDER JUICE MAGAZINE ISSUE #47, PLEASE CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION.

THE GET UP KIDS INTERVIEW WITH JIM SUPTIC WORDS AND PHOTO BY RYAN RITCHIE ‘I do not want to die in Los Angeles.’ Say your name and your favorite Spice Girl.
