It was like a dream. I was out in California for the JUICE Urban Phenomenon event on Memorial Day weekend when Rhino told me about this U.S. Bombs video shoot, that Steve Olson was shooting at Kelly Bellmar’s pool. I was like ‘Fuck, yeah, we’re there.’ So, I show up and all the legends of pool skating were there: Strople, Alva, Salba, Peters, Olson and Grosso. I couldn’t believe it. It was a Huntington Beach version of the “Twilight Zone”. I high-fived Kelly Bellmar and a punk rock tattooed girl handed me a Budweiser and the cameras were rolling.
For those of you that don’t know, the U.S. Bombs are one of the few punk rock bands that really matters, fronted by the rawest punker of all, Duane Peters. Not only was the video footage classic punk rock history, but the comraderie and the skating that went down was historic. Twenty years later, here are the guys that led skateboarding in the late 70s, rippin’ harder than ever. Look out for the new U.S. Bombs video and pick up their new cd. Steal it, if you have to. 12XU.
Clockwise from Top Left: Duane was rippin harder than ever – acid drops in vert reverts, roll in reverts, layback rollouts and all the classics. Never say die, Duane originated the Indy air and still flows ‘em like he’s back at Upland. • It was good to see Grosso ripping pools again. He was killin’ it all day, big backside airs inverts, r & r slides and he almost pulled a 50-50 through the corner continuing to the backside ollie over the channel- gnarly. You can’t kill the Grossman. • Though not pictured, Salba drew some serious lines at Bellmar’s. • T.A. was defining style and soul again and again. Resurrection of the dreads, frontside barker. • Olson was riding like a 36 inch coffin-shaped board flying over the channel and thrusting frontside slash grinds with ‘40s pilot goggles ready to rock. • Murf So, here I am amongst all my childhood heroes skating a rad pool and hanging with my old friends. These guys inspired me to skate pools and made me glad to be alive.
