Shogo Kubo Memorial Paddle Out / Baby Paul Cullen Annual Memorial Paddle Out, July 19, 2014, Venice Pier, Venice, CA and Shogo Kubo Memorial Skate Session at Venice Skatepark.
The Venice tribe gathered deep for a warrior’s memorial for our fallen brother Shogo Kubo. Those of us in attendance could feel the spirit of Shogo all around us. It was a day of sorrow and a day of hope. As tribal elders gathered around to speak words in his honor, Shogo, in his shy but in-your-face way of living, spoked to us all in the form of a soft, but chilling rain. It was as if Shogo collected the tears from all the paddle outs in Hawaii, Bali and Venice together to say in his humble and larger than life way, ‘Mahalo, and stay together my family. I am always here.’
