WOUNDED KNEE NEWS – Jim Murphy and Woundedknee Skateboards descended upon Pine Ridge, South Dakota in Lakota Country to spread the freedom of skateboarding to the Pine Ridge Reservation. Smithsonian TV was along to cover the Lakota Skate Culture for a documentary called “Native Skate Culture in America.” Wounded Knee is also teaming up with Jeff Ament from Pearl Jam to work on a signature deck with proceeds going towards another reservation skatepark in the works in Montana. The Stronghold Society would like to give a major shout out to Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam for his awesome support to build this first PHASE ONE plan of the WK4-Directions Skateparks. Jeff’s heart and continued support of the Stronghold Society’s Live Life Call To Action Campaigns is a huge asset to making this all possible. The Tony Hawk Foundation Board of Directors chose the Pine Ridge Skatepark as one of its top recipients with a 10,000-dollar grant. FENDER SHOWROOM GRAND OPENING – Fender hosted a fantastic celebration for the Grand Opening of the new Fender Visitor Center on Sept 15, 2011,in Corona, California, and this night was one for the musical history books, as the hall was filled with some of the most iconic artists and axe-wielding talent in the world. Larry Thomas, CEO of Fender, welcomed the crowd, and what followed was a party that rocked the house down. Buddy Guy put on a show that blew minds and whipped the crowd into a frenzy, as he introduced two uprising, young artists: Quinn Sullivan and Hayley McLean. To round out the evening, rock n’ roll photographer of epic proportions, Robert Knight, turned us on to Josh Gooch, one of the rising stars of the next generation of guitar-playing prodigies, so keep your ears peeled for this kid. Fender really rolled out the red carpet on this one and we were stoked to be a part of the festivities. Located next to the Fender factory in Corona, California, the Fender Visitor Center is the new permanent home of historic instruments, rare photographs, artifacts and cultural reflections on Fender by musicians throughout the history of modern music. The Shortboard Revolution grand opening was everything you wanted to see and know about the transformation of an era, attitude and lifestyle. The California Heritage Museum displayed a truly authentic quiver of surfboards put together under one roof and led the pioneers of the sport into a night of reminiscing. With a live ukulele playing in the background, stories began to emerge and the real history of the sport was given life once again. As the candles were blown out and the tables dismantled, the garden was filled with laughter as old friends and legends claimed waves and flipped skateboards in the grass, and showed that in the core of surfing, the revolution has proved that not a lot has changed.
