When did you first hear of SurfSkate style?

I think everyone has their own style and their own way. The first time I ever heard surfskate style was through skateboarding. You learn style in skateboarding, and how to snap and bend and turn and balance. I think everyone has their own style that works for them.

What does SurfSkate style mean to you and who has the best surf skate style?

Well, everyone has an opinion about style. Some might not have the right kind of style for others, or some may think a certain kind of style is better. I think that my style and the style that I prefer to see is when something looks flawless and easy. If you can do an air and make it look flawless and easy, it’s cooler than doing an air with a bunch of jerky moves. Being smooth, graceful and making things look easy is good style. I think Lizzie Armanto has good surfskate style. I used to see her at the Cove when we were both learning to skate and her style is smooth. Tuma is one of my favorite skaters. I’ve always looked up to him. Kelly Slater is the man of the hour and he is one of my favorite style surfers. I’m a big fan of Shaun White too. I see different styles in surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding and they’ve all influenced me to have a style that I think is graceful and smooth. With women longboarders, Kelia Moniz is one of my favorites. Kaitlin Maguire is also a favorite.

How has surfing influenced skateboarding, and skateboarding influenced surfing?

I think surfing and skateboarding have always gone hand in hand. I think they are kind of the same movements and situations. I think skateboarding is a lot like surfing. It’s the same flow. If you have good flow on a skateboard, you’ll probably have good flow on a surfboard. It’s all balance and coordination. When I do a snap on a skateboard, I can do it a hundred times, over and over again. When I surf on a shortboard, you can’t do that on the same wave. Skateboarding helps surfing and surfing helps skateboarding. When it comes to shortboarding, of course, skateboarding is really good for your balance in surfing. I think they go hand in hand.

Is SurfSkate style important today?

Of course, it is. Without style, it’s lame. There’s nothing to watch. Style is everything. From surfing to skateboarding, to any sport, style is everything.
