Juice Talks 004, Thursday, May 11, 2023, was a unique event hosted by Juice Magazine’s Dan Levy with Skateboard Hall of Famer and Surfboard Builder Hall of Famer, Jeff Ho, star of Dogtown & Z-Boys.
The night’s special guest appearance included one of the original Z-Boys, Allen Sarlo, also known as the Wave Killer. The feature film of the night was “100 Foot Wave” Season One, Episode One starring Garrett McNamara, and presented by HBO.
Juice Talks is carrying on the tradition of talk story, with special guests talking about lifetimes of surfing, skateboarding, music and art at a live show each month in Venice Beach, California at The Waterfront, located at 205 Ocean Front Walk, Venice, CA 90291.
In episode four of Juice Talks, Jeff Ho talked of first meeting Garrett McNamara, and Garrett’s ongoing quest to surf the biggest waves on the planet, and what the relationship is about between a surfer and a surfboard builder. Jeff also talked about what he thinks drives Garrett to search for monster waves, and explore a giant wave like Nazare. Jeff Ho and Allen Sarlo both weighed in on which surfers they considered the pioneers of big waves like Mavericks, Jaws, and Waimea Bay, and the also discussed the scariest thing that had ever happened to each of them surfing.
Allen Sarlo talked about the feeling of towing into a wave and that moment when it’s time to let go of the rope, and Sarlo described the special vibe of the Venice community, while he also paid tribute to his good friend, Mark Foo. Both Sarlo and Ho reflected on surfing P.O.P. pier back in the day, and what it felt like to be at the same spot once again. Both paid respect to Garrett McNamara, who is a good friend to each, and is known for sharing his knowledge and mentorship with next generations of surfers, while carrying on the long-lasting traditions of the surf tribe. As the topic turned toward the 100 Foot Wave screening, the premise of the show became the focus.
Garrett McNamara journeyed to Nazare, Portugal with one goal in mind: to conquer a 100-foot wave. His effort drove the sport of surfing to new heights and helped transform a tiny fishing village into the world’s preeminent big-wave surfing destination. From HBO Sports comes this breathtaking six-part documentary series that chronicles McNamara’s quest.
We were honored and stoked to present the amazing journey of Garrett McNamara and Nicole McNamara as they share stories of pioneering and exploring the biggest discovered waves in the world.
