RISE ABOVE AND NEVER FORGET – Jan 10-March 21. One-Up Creative Space at Podium/Ross Powers Pro Shop is presenting ‘Rise Above and Never Forget’ featuring the Art and Propaganda of Wounded Knee Skateboards on Saturday, Jan. 10, with an opening reception from 3pm-6pm. ‘One-Up Creative Space is dedicated to showing the work of people who are stepping up and doing what they believe in,’ said One Up director Brandon Smith. Smith said that Wounded Knee skateboards were selected for their radical style and inspiring message to youth. ‘We believe that creativity and community can make a difference in the world,’ Smith said. ‘Pursuing your passion can lead to great things.’ Wounded Knee Skateboards was created to educate skateboarding youth around the country about the true history of Wounded Knee and Native American history and to help Native American at risk youth from drug and alcohol abuse, according to founder Jim Murphy. A major portion of proceeds from purchases from Wounded Knee goes towards this goal. In its brief history, skateboarding has been greeted with skepticism and labeled as an outcast form of youth rebellion. ‘In reality, skateboarding is a great freedom of expression,’ Murphy added. ‘We are not here to solely make skateboards, but to remind our country of those whose land we now reside,’ Murphy said. ‘The more boards, shirts and hats I sell, the more I can give away to the at-risk youth on reservations in need of quality skateboards and clothing they cannot afford.’ ‘One Up Creative Space is proud and excited to host Wounded Knee Skateboards and their art,’ said Nick Pedemonti who co-owns Podium with Ross Powers. ‘Rise Above and Never Forget’ will be on display until March 1. Podium Pro Shop is located at 5081 Main Street in Manchester, Vermont. Please call for more information 802-367-2669.

TONY HAWK FOUNDATION NEWS – The Public Skatepark Development Guide, the indispensable handbook for public-skatepark advocates, is now available in an updated and improved second edition. First published in 2007 by the Tony Hawk Foundation, Skaters For Public Skateparks, and the International Association of Skateboard Companies, the ultimate guide for community-skatepark advocates was available for free, and supplies quickly disappeared. The new 128-page second edition features updated information and expanded chapters, including skatepark vision, advocacy, fundraising, design, and management, plus several supplements and visual aids. Author Peter Whitley revisited the material and compiled updates from dozens of experienced skatepark advocates around the country to make the Public Skatepark Development Guide second edition even more informative and helpful than the original version. At its meeting in December, the Tony Hawk Foundation Board of Directors voted to fund the printing of the second edition so that this valuable resource could once again be made available to the public for only the cost of shipping. To order the book, visit publicskateparkguide.org. The Tony Hawk Foundation’s Spring 2009 grant season is officially underway, and the grant application can be accessed via the Foundation’s Web site. The deadline for completing Tony Hawk Foundation Skatepark Grant applications for the current season is March 2, 2009. Details are available at tonyhawkfoundation.org.

NIKE SB NEWS – ‘There’s always been something about skating on cars that has fascinated me. Maybe it’s from watching 80’s skate videos when I was a kid. It seemed like there was always a car involved, whether it was Gonz doing a 50-50 on the roof of a car at the Savannah Slamma contest or Lance doing a boneless out of the back of a delivery truck in Future Primitive. The 3rd Volume of the Nike SB Custom Series features SB Amateurs Daryl Angel, Clark Hassler, Justin Brock and Grant Taylor. I came up with a specific car for each guy knowing this would be the perfect group to push the boundaries of skateboarding on cars. Each car reflects not just the different colors and ideas incorporated into their shoes but how they skate as well. The Custom Series has become an important aspect of Nike SB’s history. Not only do the riders get to color and skate in any SB shoe they want, we get the opportunity to take a new approach to skateboard photography. Have a look at Volume 3 of the Nike SB Custom Series.’ -Jon Humphrieshttp://www.nikeskateboarding.com/customseries

PRETTY IN PUNK – A Tribute to The Runaways and 5th Annual Charity Event on Friday, March 13, 2009 at The Roxy in Los Angeles, California, with 100% of the proceeds benefitting the Tianna Teegarden Memorial Fund through The Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles and Make A Wish Foundation. Originally created as a one-time fundraising event, Pretty In Punk began as a benefit for breast cancer awareness and prevention. Five years later, the event has grown into an annual charity event, combining President Tish Ciravolo’s mutual love and appreciation of giving back to the community and showcasing women in rock. Emerging in the seventies, The Runways were one of the first all-female rock groups who dared to take the stage at a time when women musicians were few and far between. Members Cherie Currie, Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Sandy West, and Jackie Fox not only broke down the doors of the music industry’s ‘Boy’s Club’, but they led the girl rock revolution that inspired an entire generation of female musicians to do the same. In celebration and appreciation of their achievements and music, each slotted Pretty In Punk artist will perform a rendition of their favorite Runaways song. This year’s line-up to include The Bangles, Amy Kuney, Whispertown 2000, Karmina, Paris Carney, President Tish Ciravolo’s band sASSafrASS, featuring a special guest collaboration from legendary Runaways vocalist Cherie Currie, and more. The full lineup will be released in the coming weeks. During this time of economic hardship, all the performers will generously donate their time free of charge in the spirit of charity to yield the highest donation possible for the Tianna Teegarden Memorial Fund and all the children the fundraiser serves. Tickets go on sale Thursday, February 5, 2009, doors open at 8PM, and the show is all ages. For tickets, visit http://theroxyonsunset.com/tickets/

THE ART OF REBELLION – Two worlds of rebellion collide when a band of low brow artists including Shepard Fairey display what rebellion means to them with a gallery opening titled The Art of Rebellion. Ten artists will display a custom-painted Harley-Davidson gas tank in the event’s theme – all to celebrate a coming out party for Harley’s latest dark ride, Iron 883…and you’re invited. The event brings together two worlds that understand breaking ground, pushing limits, and self-expression. The gallery of tanks as well as a piece from the artists own collection will be on display and available for purchase. Proceeds from the sales are going to Art Matters, a charity that supports and encourages the exploration of new ideas and art. If there’s anybody who understands self-expression, it’s Harley-Davidson. Harley supports the efforts of those who break ground creatively and artistically. In fact, Harley knows these ideals so well, that they created a collection of motorcycles called Dark Custom for today’s rebellious generation. Harley’s latest bike, Iron 883, is a raw and elemental bike built for those with a fire that keeps burning. Iron is everything you’d expect in a Harley, but done in a raw, make-it-your-own-thing way with stripped-down price – under 8k. Public opening on February 7. Both events will be in Santa Monica, at the Robert Berman Gallery (2325 Michigan Ave.). Shepard Fairey is designing a limited edition poster for this event and will be signing the first 100 copies. And as if you need one more reason to get your motor running, check out a video of the bike here: http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=58541154947
