FEBRUARY 2005 NEWS

SKATERS FOR PUBLIC SKATEPARKS NEWS – Skaters for Public Skateparks (SPS) today launched a new informational tool to help public officials and municipalities make key decisions about the site selecting and construction of skateparks in their regions. ‘There is a huge void when it comes to easily accessible information about the ‘who, what and where’ of public skateparks,’ said SPS Executive Director Kent Dahlgren. ‘We are pleased that we can offer this excellent source of skatepark information to public officials and city administrators who may be considering building a park in their town.’ The SPS website is designed to walk interested individuals through the critical decisions and success factors regarding all aspects of public skateparks. From community involvement process to site selection and development, SPS supplies all the answers in one easily accessible location. ‘The website saves cities the trouble and expense of coming up with the same old stuff every time a process starts,’ said Rod Wojtanik, project manager and landscape architect for the Portland Parks Bureau. ‘Giving them the criteria, management approaches, maintenance figures, design costs, etc. for free, means more money goes into the parks.’ SPS, through regional representation and active ties to the communities it serves, represents the aggregate views and wishes of skateboarders as it pertains to public skateparks. ‘Educating a city on the benefits of a new skatepark is an enormous and often complicated task,’ said Dahlgren. ‘The process requires research, organization, and enthusiasm as well as knowledge of what has worked well and not-so-well in other communities.’ Skaters for Public Skateparks (SPS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit skatepark advocacy organization, international in reach, dedicated to providing the information necessary to ensure safe, rewarding, freely-accessible skateparks are available to all skateboarders. GREEN SKATE LAB – These tires are rammed with earth and used as building blocks for what is going to be a bowl that is 4ft – 9ft deep with an oververt pocket. We are facing corruption issues with the embezzlement of $20,000 in Grants donated to the project’s fund. We filed a complaint and now have the DC Inspector General working on the case. It didn’t matter to us at first because we kept moving forward with a positive attitude that we would raise it on our own. We have now come across a new problem. The Parks and Recreation Department we were working with has new Directors. They seem very unhappy with the project because of the time it is taking to build it. They don’t understand the amount of effort it takes to do what we are doing. The reason we are not moving along swiftly with this project is because the grant money we were issued is now missing. We have to raise this money again so that we can rent equipment and buy materials. To sum it up briefly, we need to get this park done quick and we do not have everything we need to make it happen even though we are providing the labor for free. Below is a synopsis of what we need to do, what we have provided and what we need to make this happen. Here is a breakdown of what we need and it’s approximate costs: 100 Yards of concrete – $10,000 Lumber for forms – $1500 2 Tons of Rebar – $2000 Equipment Rental – $2000 Concrete Pump for 5 days – $5000 Contractor Fees 20% – $4000 Here is a breakdown of what we are providing and it’s approximate worth: Federal Stone Pool Coping – $2500 Tiles – $1000 Labor – $50,000 Phases for completion of the project and time estimates: One – Complete Tire Ramming and Stacking of the Super Structure – 30 Days Two – Fundraising ongoing Three – Install Forms and Rebar – 14 Days Four – Pour Concrete in Sections Shallow, Mid, and Deep – 30 Days Five – Final Touch-ups, Plant Trees, install benches – 14 Days.

We would love to receive donations or hear your ideas of what we can do to help the situation. We have a PayPal account for donations: donate@greenskatelab.org. We will have t-shirts for sale very soon and will be accepting pre-orders for them immediately. Thank you and our Sincere Thanks, Chris and Terri Nostrand, Jaime Stapula, Ben Ashworth, John Bullduc, Andy Neal and the rest of our friends at ECRW Foundation . The Green Skate Laboratory will be a multi-purpose space for recreation, arts and science. This is a multi-phase project that will emphasize recycling, physics and environmental science in order to create a skateboard recreation area for the District of Columbia. Integral to the design is the inclusion of areas where students will be able to test and perform physics, engineering and environmental science concepts and experiments. The curved and rolling ‘landscaping’ will be made with environmentally sound building techniques and composed entirely of reused and recycled materials. In addition to the science lab and recreation potential for the space, there will be large areas that will be dedicated to the creation of tile mosaics and other visual arts. Live the Dream with GSL in Washington DC!! Skaters in the Mid-Atlantic Region need your help to support the construction of DC’s FIrst real skateboard park. Members and friends of the ECRW Foundation are working on the Greenskate Laboratory as a multi-purpose space for recreation, arts and science. Much of the emphasis is on recycling. For example, the majority of the super structure is constructed of tires collected from the Potomac River Watershed. GRIND SYNDICATE NEWS – Visit the south’s newest and greatest skate company, Grind Syndicate Skateboards at www.grindsyndicate.com and see why we’re hellbent on world domination. Our riders rip pools and everything you can think of including our Hanger Bowl, Maryland, the Outer Banks, Florida, Nashville, Louisville and the ‘Pope’s’ Skatopia. Believe it or not, there was an era on the East coast with no indoor or concrete parks, and often we would go for months with nothing to skate. The local ramp was out of action, or torn down. During such ‘droughts’, we would drive an hour or two each way, daily, to another ramp, ditch or pool, whatever the spot, just to skate. The Grind Syndicate grew out of such circumstances. Having lost their ramp, in the mid-1980’s a group of Charleston, SC skaters led by Hank Biering, Mike Thorvelson and Blaize Blouin, known as ‘Team Gypsy’, traveled forty miles up the coast to Georgetown, SC where they established themselves as locals at the ‘Rasta Ramp’ named for its alternating red, yellow and green pool block. The Charleston crew mended with the Rasta crew and called themselves Grind Syndicate. They showed up everywhere and killed it. Over the years Grind Syndicate has produced some of the East Coast’s finest skaters, and thrown some of the sickest annual 4th of July and Halloween jams known to mankind at Syndicate HQ, the infamous Hanger Bowl on John’s Island, SC owned by Hank Biering. Thanks to Hank Biering for the early Syndicate history, and now through the positive energy of Syndicate members Chris Phelps and Mark Gee the World, yes ‘Todo el Mundo’, will be dominated by Grind Syndicate Skateboards, producers of the finest rock maple decks, and cotton clothing. While the big conglomerates get their shit from China, cheaper and of inferior quality, our products are MADE IN AMERICA! www.grindsyndicate.com.

DAVID NUUHIWA SR. passed away January 21, 2005. RIP. Service and paddleout was held on Saturday the 12Th of February at the Huntington Beach Pier.

QUIKSILVER, the world’s largest surf company, today announced a sponsorship worth US$1,000,000 over three years to the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships, the prestigious annual event that decides all-important world champions in boys U/18, U/16 and girls U/18 divisions, as well as deciding the National Team World Surfing Champion in the junior division. The 2005 ISA World Junior Surfing Championships are scheduled for October and will take place at California’s famed ‘Surf City’, Huntington Beach – home to Quiksilver Inc. The event will be hosted by Surfing America, the newly appointed National Governing Body (NGB) of the sport of surfing in the United States. Last year, Tahiti’s Papenoo Beach was the site for the event which attracted almost 200 competitors from 23 nations, including surfers from traditional surfing powers Australia, USA, South Africa, Brazil and Hawaii along with surfers from nations as diverse as Germany, Ireland and Costa Rica. The International Olympic Committee (IOC), the world’s largest governing sporting body, recognizes the ISA as the world governing authority for surfing and as such the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships emulate the Olympic format with all participants competing on behalf of their country, and medals being awarded to the top four finalists. American surfing legend Tom Curren holds the honor of being the first surfer to claim an ISA world junior title when the blue ribbon U/18 boys division was first introduced in 1980. Former world top 10 men’s surfer Australian Dean Morrison, Hawaiian surfing prodigy and current world number 15 Kalani Robb, along with current women’s world champion Sofia Mulanovich of Peru have also all won ISA world titles. More than 50 nations are officially registered as ISA members, with thousands of surfers every year attempting to qualify on behalf of their respective countries. STAGE DIVER FACES UP TO 8 YEARS – The Associated Press is reporting that a man charged with injuring two women when he dived off the stage at a heavy metal concert said he never realized someone in the crowd could be hurt. Joseph Seink wept Monday (Feb. 7) while testifying in his trial on two counts of felonious assault. Authorities say two 28-year-old Cleveland women each suffered a cracked neck vertebra but no serious spinal damage when the 195-pound Seink landed on them last June 4 at Scene Pavilion downtown. Seink, 34, of suburban Solon, said he sneaked backstage to see his favorite band, CLUTCH, and celebrated by jumping into the crowd when his favorite song began. ‘The last thing I wanted was to hurt anybody,’ Seink testified during his one-day trial in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court. He could be sentenced to two to eight years in prison if convicted of both charges, said Jamie Dalton, a spokeswoman for the county prosecutor’s office. Judge Nancy Fuerst is expected to rule Wednesday. ‘He should have known he was going to hurt somebody,’ said Brian Deckert, an assistant county prosecutor. Catherine Tressa and Tammie Myers both said they didn’t expect someone would jump off the stage over security guards during the concert. Witnesses told Seink’s public defender, Walter Camino, that heavy metal shows are characterized by violent slam dancing. Occasionally, witnesses said, audience members dive off the stage, expecting the crowd to catch them Followup story: The Associated Press is reporting that a man who dived off the stage at a CLUTCH concert, injuring two women in the crowd, was found guilty of reduced charges Wednesday (Feb. 9) and put on probation for one year. Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Nancy Fuerst convicted Joseph Seink, 34, of suburban Solon, on two misdemeanor counts of reckless assault. Seink, who agreed to a non-jury trial, could have faced eight years in prison if convicted on two counts of felonious assault. Seink’s attorney, Walter Camino, said he didn’t think an appeal would be filed. ‘We’re satisfied with the verdict,’ he said.

MAVERICKS SURF CONTEST – Ground-breaking coverage of 2004/2005 contest produced by Surfing Live – January 27, 2005. Half Moon Bay, CA – Mavericks Surf Ventures announced today that the world-famous Mavericks Surf Contest will be the subject of a first-of-its-kind live Internet webcast this season. Surfing Live will produce the multi-camera webcast, streamed onto the official website powered by Bolt Media at www.maverickssurf.com. Crowned by Sports Illustrated as the ‘Super Bowl of big-wave surfing,’ the contest will take place on 24 hours’ notice any day before March 31, and visitors to the official website can catch all the live action on a subscription basis. Mavericks is a world-renowned big-wave spot located one-half mile off the coast of Half Moon Bay, California which has played host to three historic big-wave surfing contests. Last season, 15,000 spectators and two million television viewers experienced the event. This year, on just 24-hours’ notice, the best big-wave surfers on the planet will return to face waves that have crested over 60 feet, frigid waters, dangerous currents, jagged rocks and the ever-present threat of the Great White Shark. Heralded as the ‘Holy of Holies’ by the San Francisco Chronicle, this year’s $75,000 contest will be broadcast live over the Internet for the first time. The webcast will capture the contest all day long-from the first wave to the awards ceremony to the invitation-only private party after the event, where hard core competitors will describe what it’s like to face ‘the most dangerous wave in the world.’ ‘Mavericks is known the world-over, but because Mother Nature insists that the contest occur on such short notice, it’s proven a real challenge for many fans to experience the event first-hand in Half Moon Bay,’ commented Mavericks Surf Ventures’ Keir J. Beadling. ‘So this year, we’ll deliver the live contest footage right to your computer monitor-it’s the next best thing to being on the beach at Mavericks.’ Added Surfing Live Creative Director Jay Johnson, ‘Utilizing state-of-the-art technology, Surfing Live will capture all the action: in the water on a jet ski, from the cliff looming 200 feet above the contest, on the sand amidst the surfers between heats, and at the awards show and post-contest celebration. We’re thrilled to be pioneering this historic webcast, and looking forward to a classic day.’ Further information is available at the official website, www.maverickssurf.com,

SHREDDING FOR HEDDINGS – SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2005 = WASHINGTON STREET SKATE PARK – SAN DIEGO, CA
As you may or may not know, Neil Heddings and Christine Rams, our good friends, are still sitting in jail for the death of Neil’s son, Marcus Heddings. The trial that awaits them was scheduled for a year and a half ago but has been pushed back month after month. The trial is now tentatively scheduled for February 3, 2005, but will most likely be rescheduled to a later date. As friends, we have an obligation to not forget them and continue to show our support. In order to bring attention, spread awareness and raise money for the wrongful imprisonment of Neil and Christine, there will be a best trick contest at the Washington St. Skate Park in San Diego, CA. The contest will be on Saturday Feb 26th, beginning at noon and ending when the sun goes down. Neil and Christine are in dire need of money to finance their defense. We are selling banner space at $100 per banner, per company. Each additional banner will be $25. We will also be selling raffle tickets to raffle off donated products from skateboard manufacturers, shoe companies, skate clothing companies, etc. Granted this is a rough time in the skate industry but it couldn’t be as rough as sitting in jail for the death of your son. This is not only a good promotion for your company it is a great donation for two friends. Your donations will be recognized with a receipt from a non-profit organization which Neil’s mom, Shirley Brookey, has set up. All banner sales will go through The Marcus Heddings Family Foundation and all product donations shall be sent to the Marcus Heddings fundraiser committee in San Diego, CA (Info regarding sales and donations, below…,) Those of us who know Neil and Christine know that these two people are gentle, kind parents who love their children. To put two people in jail for the death of their son for over two years without a fair and speedy trial is unjust. We as friends and fans need to donate and show our support in order to make sure they are not prosecuted for a crime they did not commit. Neil has contributed a tremendous amount to the skateboard industry and has a heart of gold. Now we must show our gratitude by helping them through this. Your contributions are truly appreciated and paramount in our quest for justice for Neil and Christine. Sincerely, John Ponts

LEROY GRANNIS PHOTO EXHIBIT: ‘BIRTH OF A CULTURE’ – ’60s and ’70s Surf Photography by Leroy Grannis – Feb. 26-March 30, 2005. Opening reception – Feb. 26th 6pm-8pm. Nostalgic images from surf photography icon serve to document a seminal moment in American cultural history. MB Fine Art Los Angeles presents the first exhibition of large-scale, limited edition prints by legendary surf photographer Leroy Grannis in Birth of a Culture: 60’s and 70’s Surf Photography by Leroy Grannis from February 26 through March 30, 2005. Featuring over thirty works focusing on what many consider to be the golden era of surfing-the Sixties and Seventies-Grannis’ artistry captures the purity, soul and lifestyle of a seminal moment in American cultural history. Whether shooting surf-god (and surfing buddy) Mickey Dora catching waves in Malibu or a San Onofre parking lot filled with long boards, VW buses and surfer girls, Grannis’ work nostalgically embraces both the lost elegance of the sport as well as the idealization of this uniquely California lifestyle. Grannis’ poignant images record the decades’ surfing spirit and evoke a sense of timeless grace that greatly contrasts to the modern-day ‘extreme sport’ notion of surfing. A surfer himself, Leroy Grannis was born in Hermosa Beach, California in 1917 and began shooting surf-culture images on 22nd Street in Hermosa in 1960 as a hobby at the suggestion of a family doctor. He quickly became one of the sport’s most important documentarians, voted into the International Surfing Hall of Fame as the number one lensman in 1966, awarded SIMA’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002 for his legendary surf photography and most recently, featured on the cover and within Taschen’s Surfing: Vintage Surfing Graphics. The Leroy Grannis photo exhibit will be hosted by MB Fine Art 612 N. Almont Dr. West Hollywood, CA 90069 tel: 310.550.0050. Visit www.mbfala.com for more.

Open to all, this year’s Patrons Night 2005 is definitely going to set a new standard for this annual event! Professional skateboarders will perform tricks on a vert ramp and street course, and the food is strictly from the beach?including corn dogs, popcorn and cotton candy. And, there will also be a silent auction of designer skateboards created by an array of Los Angeles area designers. New vendors are also invited and encouraged to purchase a booth at the event. Because the attendees will include graphic designers, art directors, creative directors, copywriters, photographers and illustrators, this will be an outstanding opportunity for a company to meet and connect with these graphic design industry professionals.
