Press Release:

October 8, 2014 (New York, NY) – Theatre Within, the grassroots non-profit dedicated to furthering the performing arts as a positive social force, today announced the guest artists for its 34th Annual John Lennon Tribute on Friday, December 5 at 8pm at Symphony Space in New York City.

Rock icon Debbie Harry (Blondie) tops a stellar line-up featuring Kate Pierson (B-52s), David Johansen (NY Dolls, Buster Poindexter),  Joan Osborne(six-time Tribute performer), Marshall Crenshaw, Amy Helm, Rich Pagano (Fab Faux) and Ben E. King, who along with Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller wrote the pop anthem Stand By Me, famously covered by John Lennon in 1975.

In addition, legendary rock photographer Bob Gruen, who captured John Lennon’s years in New York, will be honored for his artistry and charitable impact with the first ever John Lennon Real Love Award.

“I share Theatre Within’s belief that music and the performing arts have a special power to bring people together and inspire us to make a positive difference,” said Yoko Ono. “It’s beautiful that the Tribute continues to have such a powerful impact in John’s memory.”

In recent years, the Tribute has raised money to help feed the hungry, build music schools in the Third World and support Hurricane Sandy relief. Proceeds from this year will benefit Theatre Within’s John Lennon Real Love Project, a new mobile songwriting program for children and teens undergoing long term medical treatment. The program launched in September and is ongoing at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore in the Bronx.

Joe Raiola, the Tribute’s creator/producer, who is also Senior at MAD Magazine, says he’s especially looking forward to Joan Osborne’s set. At his suggestion Ms. Osborne will commemorate John Lennon’s last live performance by playing the three songs that he sang with Elton John at Madison Square Garden on Thanksgiving night 40 years ago.

Tickets for Theatre Within’s 34th Annual John Lennon Tribute are on sale and available online anytime at LennonTribute.org or by telephone at 212-864-5400, Tuesday – Sunday, 1pm – 6 pm.  Ticket prices are $65, $85 and $105.  A limited number of VIP packages are available starting at $150.

To help fund the Tribute and insure ongoing support, Theatre Within recently launched “Friends of the Annual John Lennon Tribute.” Contributors of $25 or more receive John Lennon and Beatles CDs and DVDs courtesy of Capitol Records and Eagle Rock Entertainment. A limited edition of Double Fantasy Stripped Down, autographed by Yoko Ono and the album’s producer Jack Douglas, is also available. For more visit LennonTribute.org.

Produced in association with Music Without Borders, Theatre Within’s Annual John Lennon Tribute is the only John Lennon Tribute concert in America sanctioned by Yoko Ono.
