WILDERNESS BOWL R.I.P. – ‘Santa Barbara’s premiere pond, the Wilderness Bowl, ceased to exist this 9th of April 2008. This classic no-permit creation hosted many a pro and broke many a bone. Mike Pugh spending his last night in the bowl was awoken at 4am. by Jason Jessee who just happened to be in the neighborhood to collect a piece of coping from the grail. With dawn came the iron jaws of Cal-Trans that finished off the iconic site. Condolences to Scott Powers, Adam ‘Chili’ Stern, Rick and Tony Capalby and especially to Bob Duncan who received this his second raping from the state of California.’ – words by James O’Mahoney.

X GAMES KILL VERT – The official press release from EXPN states…. ‘ESPN will debut three new disciplines at X Games 14 this summer in Los Angeles – Skateboard and BMX SuperPark and BMX Street. SuperPark will be a 100 percent transition-focused design – blending a variety of terrain and obstacles into one seamless course. The SuperPark disciplines will highlight the all-around abilities of the world’s best transition skaters and BMX riders. This will mark the first time ever that X Games will not have a stand-alone vert ramp. In addition to Skateboard and BMX SuperPark, BMX Street will be added to X Games where it will follow the same template as X Games mainstay Skateboard Street. The concept is simple, raw street features such as stairs, rails and ledges replicated in an arena setting. For X Games 14 at The Home Depot Center and STAPLES Center, these new disciplines will join the other Skateboard and BMX competitions of Skateboard Street and Skateboard and BMX Big Air. Fourteen hours of live X Games programming on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC – all showcased in high definition – will be aired July 31 – August 3, as well as on ESPN International, EXPN.com, ESPN Classic, ESPN360.com, SportsCenter and ESPN2’s X Center. ‘We are constantly striving to present new sports and disciplines at the X Games that accurately reflect the state of action sports and participants,’ said Chris Stiepock, X Games General Manager. ‘Skateboarders and BMX riders still enjoy vert features, but most are doing so at skateparks rather than on stand-alone vert halfpipes. The proliferation of public skateparks has fostered new athletes who excel on large park features, leading us to develop the SuperPark discipline.’ BMX legend Mat Hoffman, the sport organizer for X Games BMX events, said: ‘The very core of BMX is to explore and be creative. This new format will promote this progression, providing the opportunity for the best riders to expand Park and Vert to new dimensions.’ In addition to the currently-named discipline of SuperPark, X Games 14, the premier action sports event in the world, will feature athletes from across the globe competing for medals and prize money in the following sports: BMX Freestyle, Moto X, Skateboard, Surfing and Rally Car Racing.’ www.expn.com.

X GAMES RESURRECT VERT SIX DAYS LATER – ESPN Decides to Continue Vert – ESPN has decided to continue its 13-year tradition of vert competitions at this year’s X Games. Over the past month ESPN has engaged in many conversations with the X Games BMX and Skateboard vert athletes in an attempt to transition the Vert discipline into one featuring a skatepark course design. While many athletes were initially receptive to the idea, the majority of them have indicated to ESPN that they would prefer to compete on a halfpipe. ESPN will also continue its plans to hold SuperPark as a new discipline for skateboarding and BMX at the X Games while working with the athletes to better define exactly how the SuperPark course will be designed. ‘The X Games has always had a commitment to the athletes and our consistent communication with them has allowed us to collectively grow this event to where it is today,’ said Chris Stiepock, General Manager, X Games. ‘In this particular case the communication took many turns but a consensus by the athletes has emerged that has lead us to reinstate Vert as an X Games discipline this year. We will continue to work with the athletes to make the X Games relevant and successful.’ Pro Skateboarder and 14-time X Games medalist, Bob Burnquist, said: ‘I think it’s great that ESPN will continue to have a Vert contest, and I’m looking forward to working with them to make sure the vert competition at the X Games is the best that it can be.’ www.expn.com.

Next door, the former CB’s Gallery at 313 Bowery is also getting a high-end makeover: the Morrison Hotel Gallery, which sells fine-art prints of classic rock photographs, opened a location in that space with a plan to preserve some of the original, grungy CBGB decor, including bathroom graffiti and fliers that had been buried in an inner wall. In April, the gallery will open a show devoted to Bob Gruen, the New York photographer who captured much of the first generation at CBGB. June will bring ‘The Art of Motorcycles.’ Morrison Hotel, founded in 2001, will maintain its gallery in SoHo as well as locations in Los Angeles and La Jolla, CA.

‘1978: CRASHED MEMORIES’ BOOK INTRODUCTION – By C.R. Stecyk – Three decades of being aware of the Ger-I/Todd character’s activities hadn’t adequately prepared me. I’ve known him via numerous incarnations: as a shot in the head combat vet, a punk rock singer, miscreantic youth, proud father, surfer, high school drop out, honored university graduate, homeless person, skater, community activist, drug addict, interpreter, martial artist, straight edge factory worker, youth counselor and international businessman. He’s saved more than a few lives while on lifeguard duty, and I’ve also witnessed him come back from the verge of technical dead surviving severe injures sustained in the pursuit of fun. Quien Sabes? Throughout all of the tedium, triumph and tragedies Ger-I had been making notations of a mental sort. ‘1978 : Crashed Memories’ is the resultant honest hand hewed chronicle. This installment of his life is a crystalline vision rendered from the fertile muck beneath the DIY underbelly that characterized the Angelino scene which festered through the mid 1970’s into the late 1980’s. Lewis story is told forthrightly with a panache derived out of hope, humor and desperately hard fought transgression. Some readers will be seduced by the coincidental yet undeniable cinematic synergy that courses within this narrative. Society’s grudging acceptance of the outcasts portrayed therein demands that heroes be made out of these genuine deviants who were later proven right in their wrongs. To his credit Ger-I Lewis never falters from his unvarnished dissection of the scene. Nor does he fall into the pit of sloppy sentimentality, trademark specific catch phrases or the psychological self-flagellation so often common to the redeemed. The absolute value of a tale is in its telling. Lewis deadpan everyman’s wit is wickedly honest and decidedly perceptive. His bone is well picked.

ART IS NOT PEACE BUT WAR – New Works by BLEK LE RAT. ON EXHIBITION – APRIL 5TH – MAY 2ND, 2008. A pioneer of graffiti writers in Europe, Blek le Rat was one of the first people to use stencils to make public art on the street using icons instead of writing his name. Inspired by a stenciled portrait he saw of Mussolini amongst some WWII ruins during a trip to Italy, he created a stencil of a life size silhouette of a rat running along the streets. His method of creating street art changed the face of graffiti and still continues to greatly influence artists around the world; from Shepard Fairey and Banksy, to JayBadbc and Oseas Duarte to the young artist wheat pasting work around town. He now uses his art to serve a social cause, to evoke reaction and inspire change. Most recently, he pasted hundreds of posters around Paris of Florence Aubenas, a French journalist who was kidnapped in Iraq, hoping to provoke a reaction from politicians and journalists and aid in her release. This project gained Blek incredible public support, and has encouraged him to continue to use his Street Art as a voice for the less fortunate. SUBLIMINAL PROJECTS 1331 W. SAVE HATTERAS – In Fall of 2007, the National Audubon Society, The Defenders of Wildlife and the Southern Environmental Law Center filed suit in Federal District Court against the United States of America to limit or ban access to many of the primary areas of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, including Oregon Inlet, Cape Point, most of Ocracoke and many others. This will also have a devastating effect on the culture, businesses, tourism, property values and the economy as a whole in an area with an existing healthy natural environment. MIKI DORA BOOK – David Rensin’s riveting new biography ALL FOR A FEW PERFECT WAVES: The Audacious Life and Legend of Rebel Surfer Miki Dora tells Miki ‘Da Cat’ Dora’s singular story as never before revealed. For most of the 1950’s and 1960’s, Miki Dora was probably the best surfer in the world. For the rest of his life Dora remained surfing’s most outspoken practitioner, charismatic prince, chief anti-hero, committed loner, and enduring mystery. His God-given gifts in the water coupled with the living theater of his complicated, comic, non-conformist personality on and beyond the beach, made him what his peers could never be: a legend in his own time. In All For A Few Perfect Waves, Rensin draws upon a forty year love of surfing, and more than four years of extensive interviews (over 300) with Dora’s friends, enemies, family, and lovers to craft a compelling narrative of a loner, rebel, outlaw, wanderer, and legend the likes of which has yet to pass this way again. www.HarperCollins.com
