Maybe not that extreme but the The Tony Hawk Foundation announced August 5th that skateparks applying for grants with a budget of $50,000 or more must be built out of concrete in order to help create a longer lasting influence of skateboarding around the country. Advances in concrete pouring and skatepark building has decreased the cost of building concrete parks consistently over the last two years and in a considerable amount of instances become less expensive than using steel-framed modular pieces to build a park. If the latter is the desired route of the park hopeful skaters may still apply for grants, however if their budget is under $50,000 they must prove that they've had concrete estimates done and that it is out of their price range. While concrete may seem more costly in the short term it is the long term plans that show more cost effectiveness. Maintenance costs for modular parks over a couple years proves to be much more costly than maintaining a concrete park. One would hope that a park would be around forever and to have it close due to a lack of upkeep is a crime. http://www.tonyhawkfoundation.org SAVE THE TURF - There have been many concrete parks that have closed for reasons beyond maintenance, but it is much harder to just permanently erase a concrete park. Take the Turf skatepark in Wisconsin for example. Opened in 1978 it was one of the largest indoor concrete parks in its area only to be filled up with gravel and covered by a twelve inch slab of concrete. Fast forward to today and the Turf is finding new life. A storage facility was built over it but then sold a couple months ago to the state of Wisconsin in order to make room for a new parking lot. After breaking through the concrete and digging down eight feet into the gravel the working crew had to stop and reassess what they were dealing with. Avid skate fans with retro Turf Member cards in hand flocked back to their spot with shovels, pick axes, and wheel barrows to start unearthing their favorite shred spot. Check out the photos of their excavation and find out how you can SAVE THE TURF! - http://www.savetheturf.com/ ASA ENTERTAINMENT AND MEGARAMP EVENTS ENTER MULTI-YEAR PARTNERSHIP - - Leading action sports event producer, ASA Entertainment (ASA), and MegaRamp Events, creators of the world-renowned 90' high ramp used in the Big Air competitions at the X Games, announced today that they have entered a multi-year partnership to produce the MegaRamp ASA Triples tour (Triples). The ASA Big-Air BMX Triples, which was introduced in 2007 as part of the ASA Action Sports World Tour, was developed into a stand-alone tour in 2010. As a result of this partnership, the Triples events moving forward will be rebranded as MegaRamp ASA Triples. The MegaRamp ASA Triples showcases the industry's top BMX and skateboarding pros competing in a series of unique head-to-head battles while taking on the challenge of the 195-foot long course, consisting of a 25-foot high roll-in ramp, two 25-foot wide jumps and a course-ending 14-foot high quarter-pipe. The competition's head-to-head format stretches the athletic limits of these competitors and showcases the pros' innovation and versatility with a bevy of awe-inspiring tricks. The tour will initially debut with four MegaRamp branded events this fall among the eight Triples contests being produced by ASA in 2010. Below is a list of the next 2010 events:
FALLEDPARKEN SKATEPARK - Nicky Guerrero stoked to see the first wall going up at Falledparken Skatepark in Copenhagen, Denmark. Since 1988, Falledparken, a large public park in Denmark's capital has had a skatepark. Originally it featured a vert ramp, an asphalt-surfaced miniramp and a few wooden obstacles. Over the years, Falledparken has been the stage for many, many happenings. Notoriously, for 10 years it was here the infamous Prygl i Parken contests were held between 1989 and 1999. From an informal gathering of app. 50 locals and fans, with a case of Guld Tuborg beers being the first prize, Prygl i Parken became a cultural phenomenon - drawing thousands of skaters and fans from all over Europe. In recent years, Falledparken became the unwanted step-child of the City of Copenhagen. An unmanned, public facility, it became the victim of budget cuts, and the ramps and obstacles fell into disrepair. A more litigious society would surely have seen the City being sued for the frankly dangerous conditions there. One highlight was when Copenhagen's Rune Glifberg celebrated his 20th anniversary as a skateboarder in 2006. A who's who of skaters and friends enjoyed the free beers, the bands playing and great weather. As a part of Falledparken's 100th anniversary, the skatepark finally felt the love in 2008. The City of Copenhagen agreed to renovate Denmark's oldest skatepark. Originally the budget was inadequate, but thanks to a donation from a captain of industry this was quickly remedied, and now the results are beginning to show; since April this year landscaping, sculpting, draining and a mind-blowing amount of rebar has been done, and on Friday, July 16th the build reached a major milestone with the first wall of the monstrous pool being poured. According to plan, the park should be done in the autumn of 2010. - Photo and story by STEEN KELSA GET BUSY LIVING - Element Europe launched their new film GET BUSY LIVING in Berlin, Germany. Well let us introduce to you One Day as a Lion, Rage frontman Zack De La Rocha's side project with former Mars Volta drummer Jon Theodore. Their first performance was this past weekend in Pomona, CA and they had a lot to say. Accompanied by Joey Karam (Locust) on the keys, One Day as a Lion rocked the Aladdin Jr. restaurant for a lucky few hundred. While at the show De La Rocha spoke out against the new immigration laws, said to allow racial profiling. Many have spoken out against the immigration laws, but when conveyed through the barrage of jazzy funk-punk tunes from the band it seems a little more forceful. DJ MUGGS, ILL BILL PREP COLLABORATIVE LP - Acclaimed DJ/producer, DJ Muggs, and Brooklyns heavy metal influenced hip-hop artist, Ill Bill, have teamed up for a collaborative full-length record, Kill Devil Hills, to be released on August 24th on Fat Beats Records. Produced entirely by DJ Muggs, Kill Devil Hills features guest appearances from B-Real, Raekwon, Sean Price, Everlast, Slaine, Chace Infinite, O.C., Q-Unique, Vinnie Paz, Sick Jacken, and more. This rings true once again on Kill Devil Hills. I prefer getting in the lab and actually creating projects with people instead of just sending out beat CDs, explains Muggs. I'm a producer in the fullest extent, where I like to not only produce an album, but craft an album. Being able to start a record from the beginning and following through with it, making sure that all the songs complement each other. I've always come from making albums and producing my records; I'm still into that By going where instinct took them, Ill Bill and DJ Muggs collaborative union manifested into a sonically cohesive album. Opening August 27, 2010. Welcome to the North Shore of Oahu - the 7 Mile Miracle - surfings Xanadu. A freak of nature that is long considered the ultimate test for surfers. It is the Triple Crown - the final 3 contests of the year - held in the cyclone of the North Shore between Halloween and Christmas Eve. The Triple Crown is a catalyst for a big wave soap opera that unfolds around, beside and away from the actual contests. Fifty-five days of low comedy, high drama and nonstop jaw dropping action with the biggest waves, while the best surfers young and old, men and women, take the challenge on this beautiful, compelling earthly and human landscape. The North Shores population triples and locals are joined by heroes, posers, legends, leeches, fans, fanatics, dreamers, saints and sinners looking for money, fame, redemption, love, lust, inspiration, parties, respect and surf. 400 will arrive to confront their fears of whether or not they should have come: 50 will nearly drown, boards will be broken, stitches given, a few dreams fulfilled, a few nightmares visited, legends bestowed and revoked. For some, nothing will ever be the same. Director Dana Brown previously explored the world of surfing in the critically acclaimed Step into Liquid and collaborations with his father, Bruce Brown, including Endless Summer II, Endless Summer Revisited and On any Given Sunday Revisited.
