411 VIDEO MAGAZINE - Former pro-skateboarder and publisher, Joshua Friedberg just won the first ever Nikon Festival Audience Award, a prize worth $25,000! The San Antonio local’s short film “New York State of Mind” was recently crowned the top audience-selected video submission in the short-form video contest sponsored by camera manufacturer, Nikon.  Drawing inspiration from one of his favorite travel destinations, New York City, Friedberg artfully captured the Festival’s theme of “A Day Through Your Lens.”  His video, one of more than 1,200 submissions, raced to the top of the audience-selected submissions and captured the $25,000 prize. As a former professional skateboarder, Friedberg rallied widespread support from the skateboarding community to earn a combination of the most views and highest average rating. He credits retweets of his Festival video via Twitter by media personalities Bam Margera (@BAM_MARGERA), Steve Berra (@steve_berra) and Tony Hawk (@tonyhawk) as a key to his win. Friedberg plans to utilize the $25K prize money to revitalize 411 Video Magazine, a publishing venture he began years ago.  His experience skateboarding and the first iteration of 411 Video Magazine led him to pursue filmmaking, recording several of his skateboarding comrades. TONY HAWK FOUNDATION NEWS - Help Build A Skatepark In Watts - Tony Hawk Foundation announces latest skatepark Grant Awards. The Tony Hawk Foundation Board of Directors has announced the recipients of its Fall 2009 Skatepark Grant Awards, as well as a special allocation to match, dollar-for-dollar, donations to the Watts Skatepark project in Los Angeles. From the 52 applications submitted for this season's Grant Review Session, the Board of Directors selected fourteen from low-income communities across the U.S., and collectively awarded $130,000 to help build free, quality skateparks that will serve at-risk youth. The Tony Hawk Foundation Board also allocated $10,000 in matching funds for the Watts Skatepark project in Los Angeles. Through January 15, 2010 all donations made via skatewatts.org will be MATCHED by the Tony Hawk Foundation*. Having helped launch it in October, the Tony Hawk Foundation is also featuring the Watts Skatepark project during the Athletes For Hope Who Gives? Racing For A Cause challenge, a widely publicized fundraising event hosted by globalgiving.org/athletes-for-hope/. With few alternatives to crime, gangs, and drugs, youth in the Watts community struggle daily to find healthy pastimes that can keep them engaged and active. Through this effort to build a free-quality public skatepark in Watts, the Tony Hawk Foundation is helping local youth realize their dream of a world-class skatepark. Make a contribution during this limited campaign, and the impact of your donation will be DOUBLED. Visit skatewatts.org and support the youth of Watts today. (*All donations made during the Who Gives? Racing For A Cause challenge—December 15, 2009 through January 15, 2010—will be matched by the Tony Hawk Foundation, up to $10,000.). A charitable, non-profit organization, the Tony Hawk Foundation was established in 2002 by its namesake, professional skateboarder Tony Hawk, to promote and provide funds for high-quality public skateparks in low-income areas throughout the United States—with an emphasis on the word "quality." Since then, the Foundation has awarded $3,111,000 to 444 communities. The Foundation focuses on working with local officials and grassroots, community-based organizations that plan to hire designers and contractors with strong experience designing and building skateparks. http://tonyhawkfoundation.org/

SKATEBOARD: EVOLUTION OF A CALIFORNIA CULTURE - Exhibit runs through May 30, 2010. Curated by museum staff curator Michael Trotter and a committee including skateboard historian Dale Smith, 1960’S world champion Cris Dawson, Zephyr founders Skip Engblom and Jeff Ho as well as legendary Z-Boys Tony Alva, Stacy Peralta and Nathan Pratt, the exhibition traces the evolution of boards from pre-1950 to the present, showcasing the riders, designers, artists, and manufacturers that created the California phenomenon known as the skateboard. From the first planks of wood with metal roller skate wheels nailed to the bottom, through the era of clay to modern polyurethane and kicktails, the boards and riders scaled greater heights of daring and style and took “sidewalk surfing” from a homegrown activity to a worldwide cultural phenomenon. More than 250 rare boards show the timeline of skate history; and photographs by C.R. Stecyk, Glen E. Friedman and Wynn Miller (among others) document the movement and its personalities. The California Heritage Museum is located in the vortex at Main Street and Ocean Park Blvd.   “Skateboard: Evolution of a California Culture” will focus on the various regions of California that were the epicenters of skate design, production and culture: San Francisco/Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, Malibu/Santa Monica/Venice, Huntington Beach/Orange County, and Oceanside/San Diego. Each has taken at least one turn in the spotlight over the last fifty years and the exhibit will provide an in-depth look at the birth and development of skate in California. California Heritage Museum is located at 2612 Main Street, Santa Monica, CA. http://web.mac.com/calmuseum/iWeb/Site/Home.html

SUICIDAL TENDENCIES NEWS - The First Ever SUICIDAL TENDENCIES DVD To Be Released This January - Since their beginnings in Venice, CA in the early ‘80s, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES have led the charge in the skate punk/thrash metal movement, consequently influencing an entire generation of bands along the way. Fontana Distribution is proud to announce Live At The Olympic Auditorium, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES’ first ever DVD release! The DVD will street January 26, 2010 via the band’s own imprint, Suicidal Records. The approximately 80-minute DVD features 16 tracks including ST classics “Institutionalized,” “War Inside My Head,” and “Possessed To Skate” and captures SUICIDAL in their most natural environment: Onstage, uncensored and ready to tear you to shreds. Elaborated ST founding vocalist Mike Muir: "The band started getting emails from some crazy guy that always said, 'I know you'll probably think I'm crazy, but I'm not. I'm wanna book ST for a show and I got this idea...'. Well, one by one we shot down the 'unique' ideas until one time he emailed and said the Olympic Auditorium was being bought by a Korean Church. Shouldn't it be sent off with a special last gig? The band agreed and then the work began. The promoter -- Evel Dick Donato who went on to win Big Brother -- tells a bit about the show, making of etc. on the intro. Lots of drama, none more than the day before the show when I woke up and couldn't walk. But the show must go on and the back surgery would have to wait till afterwards. SUICIDAL recorded live at the Olympic Auditorium in front of 4,000 Cycos...but now you can enjoy it in the safety of your living room." http://www.suicidaltendencies.com

CHERIE CURRIE'S "NEON ANGEL: A Memoir of a Runaway" hits bookstores March 16, 2010. When Cherie Currie, the lead singer of 1970s teenage girl group The Runaways, sat down to write her personal memoir, she never imagined the book would be made into a highly anticipated movie, starring some of Hollywood's hottest actors. Cherie Currie is the original lead singer of ‘70s teenage, all-girl rock band The Runaways. At the tender age of 15, she joined the group, a talented group of girls who could play rock like no other female group before them. The girls, Currie with Joan Jett, and Lita Ford on guitar and Sandy West on drums, arrived on the Los Angeles music scene in 1975, belting out provocative teen rebellion songs such as “Cherry Bomb.” As Cherie chronicles the band’s rise from LA clubs to selling out their first US tour, she also weaves in a portrait of an amazing time in punk rock. The Runaways headlined shows with opening acts such as the Ramones, Van Halen, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Cheap Trick, and Blondie. They played at CBGBs, and got into the London punk scene and hung out with The Sex Pistols. With the help of multi-platinum hit songwriter and producer Kenny Laguna, Currie was able to have her book made into the feature film,  The Runaways --starring Dakota Fanning (War of the Worlds, New Moon, The Secret Lives of Bees) as Currie, and Kristen Stewart (Twilight, New Moon, Into The Wild, Panic Room) playing Joan Jett.  The Runaways also stars Oscar nominee Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road) as manager Kim Fowley, and Oscar winner Tatum O'Neal as Cherie’s mother. The Runaways movie hits theaters nationwide March 19, 2010. FLOGGING MOLLY SET TO RELEASE 'LIVE AT THE GREEK THEATRE' 90 MIN CONCERT DVD AND DOUBLE CD IN STORES MARCH 2, 2010 - "Good evening Los Angeles, we're Flogging Molly and this is what we do." Those were the first words from singer Dave King on the evening of September 12, 2009, when Flogging Molly took the stage at the legendary Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, CA. For a man who twelve years prior was playing at the helm of what was arguably a local bar band, headlining the Greek Theatre was surely a crowning achievement for him and his six compatriots. Born at an Irish pub called Molly Malone's on Hollywood's Fairfax Blvd, Flogging Molly rose from relative obscurity through years of hard work and relentless touring, blending traditional Irish folk instrumentation with heartfelt punk rock. Never lacking for confidence and swagger, the band respectfully declined to accept an award from the LA Weekly in 1998 for 'best bar band', as they had much bigger dreams and aspirations than that title conveyed. Remarkably enough, only weeks before the Greek Theatre show, Flogging Molly was awarded an official Gold record plaque from the RIAA for their 2002 release, Drunken Lullabies. 500,000 units sold in this day and age is no small feat for any act, and once again it is a testament to the band's foresight and evidence of the impact of their music on the throngs of fans that they play in front of each year. www.sideonedummy.com

But one shouldn't be so quick to assume anything with these guys who still have much more to bring to the punk-rock scene. To wit, their latest album, We Are All We Have, though full of their signature bracing, high-octane hardcore punk, also features a few surprises. http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=101053389

AMERICAN INDIAN SKATEBOARDING EXHIBITION - Now Open in New York - An exhibition celebrating the vibrancy, creativity and history of American Indian skateboarding culture is on view at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian in New York, the George Gustav Heye Center.  “Ramp It Up: Skateboard Culture in Native America” includes 20 skatedecks, rare images, video of Native skaters and skate decks from Native companies and contemporary artists. The exhibition will close June 27, 2010. One of the most popular sports on Indian reservations, skateboarding has inspired American Indian and Native Hawaiian communities to host skateboard competitions and build skate parks to encourage their youth. Native entrepreneurs own skateboard companies and sponsor community-based skate teams. Native artists and filmmakers, inspired by their skating experiences, credit the sport with teaching them a successful work ethic. Highlights include a never-before-seen 1969 image taken by skateboarding icon, Craig R. Stecyk III, of a skatedeck depicting traditional Native imagery and 1973 home-movie footage of Zephyr surf team members Ricky and Jimmy Tavarez (Gabrielino-Tongva).  The exhibition features the work of visual artists Bunky Echo-Hawk (Yakama/Pawnee), Joe Yazzie (Navajo), Traci Rabbit (Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma) and Dustinn Craig (White Mountain Apache/Navajo) and highlights young Native skaters such as 20-year-old Bryant Chapo (Navajo) and 10-year-old Augustin and 7-year-old Armondo Lerma (Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians). The exhibition originally appeared at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. from June 12-Sept. 13, 2009. The Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in New York, the George Gustav Heye Center is located at One Bowling Green in New York City, across from Battery Park. MALIBU SURFING ASSOCIATION - MOVIE NIGHT on Saturday Feb. 6, 2010 at Duke's in Malibu, CA. www.msasurfing.org

BIG WAVE NEWS - Mavericks pioneer and big wave surf legend Jeff Clark filed a lawsuit against Mavericks Surf Ventures Inc. (MSV), the company he co-founded to run the Mavericks Surf Contest, and its current directors. The lawsuit cites breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty and fraud. The lawsuit comes one week after an already re-scheduled mediation was canceled by MSV attorney Paul Marotta and CEO Keir Beidling, claiming the Mavericks Surf Contest would be held that week. It was not. “I’ve waited patiently and remained quiet in an effort to settle our issues in private, without casting a shadow over the contest that I founded. But it’s obvious MSV has no intention of working this out. They have forced me to file suit in order to move on with my life,” Clark said. “When I signed on to partner with Keir and Evolve Sports, I trusted them to do the right thing, to honor my spirit and passion for surfing,” Clark said. “I made a mistake and I trusted the wrong people. They have refused to honor the contracts they created and have turned the contest into a corporate circus.” The complaint, filed with the Superior Court of San Francisco County, states that MSV breached its contracts with Clark, withheld payments on those contracts, and breached its fiduciary duties to shareholders by the Board’s self-dealing, squandering of corporate assets and failure to disclose even basic financial and other corporate information. The suit claims that, in breaching their fiduciary duties, MSV and its current directors acted with oppression, fraud and malice.
