NIKE NEWS - Nike SB, The LA84 Foundation, and the City of Los Angeles Join Paul Rodriguez, Jr. to Open New Skate Park on Go Skateboarding Day and Father’s Day - June 21, 2009 - In its continuing effort to give Los Angeles-area youth new places to play, Nike, The LA 84 Foundation and the City of Los Angeles joined Nike SB pro Paul Rodriguez, Jr. and his dad, legendary comedian Paul Rodriguez, Sr., to inaugurate the Paul Rodriguez Skate Park at Ritchie Valens Public Park in Pacoima, California. Constructed in an area of Los Angeles near where Paul Rodriguez grew up, this new skate park’s design pushes current standards by recreating famous Southern California skate spots and incorporating them into the natural fabric of the existing park. As popular as skateboarding is around the world, a majority of famous skate spots in the United States are on private property and are illegal to skate. This skate park has no fences or traditional skate park elements, just natural, skate-able architecture, as skaters would find in any neighborhood. The Paul Rodriguez Skate Park was designed and constructed by Joe Ciaglia and California Skateparks. As industry leaders in forward thinking design and construction, the firm was the logical choice. Skate legend and fellow Nike SB team rider Lance Mountain was also the co-designer of the park. www.LA84Foundation.org and www.nikeskateboarding.com

TONY HAWK FOUNDATION NEWS - The Tony Hawk Foundation Board of Directors has announced its Spring 2009 skatepark grant awards. Twice annually the foundation’s Board selects skatepark projects that best match several criteria—applicants’ skateparks must be located in low-income communities, involve the skaters in all aspects of skatepark development (from negotiating with local leaders, to fundraising, to helping design the skatepark), and be designed and built by experienced skatepark specialists. Twenty-two projects were selected for grant awards from 73 applicants, receiving a total of $175,000 to assist in the construction of their free public skateparks. Pawhuska, Oklahoma earned the top grant award of $25,000 for its skatepark that will draw visitors from the local Osage Nation Native American and other non-Native communities. In 2007, local skaters formed the Make It Happen In Pawhuska committee to promote the skatepark concept. Endorsed by the Chamber of Commerce, they convinced other area business and nonprofit groups, the City of Pawhuska, and the Osage Nation leadership to join them and to combine resources to build a quality, durable public skatepark. “The community could see the need to provide a safe environment for a sport that’s growing in popularity,” says Cindy Helmer, Chairman of Make It Happen In Pawhuska (MHP). “It’s clearly a sport that includes any and all youth—regardless of size, age, color, or academic ability.” Since 2002 the Tony Hawk Foundation has been working with communities across the U.S. to assist in their pursuit of safe, quality public skateparks. Pawhuska is the fifteenth Tony Hawk Foundation Skatepark Grant recipient to serve Native American communities. “Skating provides a stimulus for young kids,” says Mize. “It challenges them, gives them something to aspire to, and gives them the ambition to learn and land a trick—these things are nonexistent in most rural Native American settings.” Helmer says the Tony Hawk Foundation grant has convinced local leaders that the skaters’ vision of a custom concrete skatepark was worth committing to: “The donation from the Tony Hawk Foundation will allow this committee to build a first-class skatepark, versus the original modular skatepark that the City of Pawhuska was pursuing. The ‘Tony Hawk’ stamp on the project also raises the level of excitement and enthusiasm from youth and parents alike.” With the success of the Pawhuska project, Mize has reached out to Tribal leaders across Oklahoma, Colorado, and Florida to help them start similar skatepark projects. “The idea is to get concrete venues at many tribal locations and begin to arrange regional competitions,” he says. “These would culminate at a ‘Nationals’ held at the All Nations Skate Jam in Albuquerque [New Mexico].” The MHP example, he believes, will inspire other Native American communities make it happen for themselves, too.

HANK WILLIAMS III’S BAND “ASSJACK” TO RELEASE SELF-TITLED ALBUM ON CURB RECORDS AUGUST 4 - ASSJACK--the death-metal band founded and fronted by HANK WILLIAMS III--will release their first album of fully authorized music August 4 via Curb Records. Featuring tracks like “Redneck Ride,” “Wasting Away” and “No Regrets,” the self-titled album personifies the split in the psyche of the singer/guitarist/songwriter/producer who last year released the psych-country album Damn Right, Rebel Proud. While they’re two vastly different sonic experiences, both projects reflect the diverse musical interests of the self-professed “crazy fuck from Tennessee.” “Nowadays, there’s a whole group of people that love Waylon and David Allan Coe and love Pantera and Slayer-- there’s a whole breed of them out there,” says Hank III. HIII will take both his “Damn” country band and ASSJACK out on the road beginning June 16 in Louisville, KY, with U.S. dates confirmed through July 15 in Knoxville, TN. For these shows, both the “Damn” band and ASSJACK will perform 45-minute sets, with a 15-minute changeover in-between. http://www.myspace.com/hank3

VANS WARPED TOUR® 2009 PRESENTED BY AT&T ANNOUNCES AFTER PARTY IN DOWNTOWN VENTURA, CA ON SUNDAY, JUNE 28 FEATURING PERFORMANCE BY PUNK ICONS FEAR AND THE MOVIE PREMIERE OF NATIONAL LAMPOON PRESENTS ENDLESS BUMMER - Vans Warped Tour® Presented by AT&T has announced a special after-party in downtown Ventura on Sunday, June 28 directly following the Vans Warped Tour show at Seaside Park in Ventura, CA. The one-night-only event will transform downtown Ventura into a Vans Warped Tour playground featuring a live performance from punk icons FEAR, followed by the movie premiere of National Lampoon Presents Endless Bummer (shot on location in Ventura). The night will also feature a dance party at The Watermark featuring DJ Kamtin Mohager aka The Street Gang of 1974 (with back-up band 3Oh!3), a private VIP party at upstairs at W20 Lounge (Watermark On Main) and public parties at local clubs Sans Souci, RooKees and The Good Bar, live performances from Blackheart Records’ The Dollyrots as well as The Action Design (who are featured on the Endless Bummer film soundtrack). ENDLESS BUMMER was Executive Produced and co-written by VANS WARPED TOUR producer and founder Kevin Lyman and will be released on DVD by National Lampoon in Fall 2009. The film chronicles 24 hours in the life of a group of teens contemplating what life will hold for them after high school. The thought of leaving the sun-drenched beaches of Ventura, California--“where beer, bongs and bikinis rule”--is temporarily banished when catching a wave turns into catching a surfboard thief from the much-despised “Valley.” Golden boy J.D. (Khan Chittenden, In Her Skin) and “stoner” Lardo (Ray Santiago, Meet the Fockers) rally their friends one last time, with the guidance of the mystical Dell (rocker Joan Jett) and veteran surfer Mike Mooney (Matthew Lillard channeling “The Big Kahuna”). SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTE SKATEBOARDING CULTURE EXHIBIT - Ramp It Up: Skateboard Culture in Native America. Exhibit runs from June 12, 2009–September 13, 2009 at NMAI on the National Mall, Washington, DC. Ramp it Up celebrates the vibrancy, creativity, and controversy of American Indian skate culture. Skateboarding combines demanding physical exertion with design, graphic art, filmmaking, and music to produce a unique and dynamic culture. One of the most popular sports on Indian reservations, skateboarding has inspired American Indian and Native Hawaiian communities to host skateboard competitions and build skate parks to encourage their youth. Native entrepreneurs own skateboard companies and sponsor community-based skate teams. Native artists and filmmakers, inspired by their skating experiences, credit the sport with teaching them a successful work ethic. The exhibition features rare and archival photographs and film of Native skaters as well as skatedecks from Native companies and contemporary artists. http://www.nmai.si.edu/

SURFLAND - Upcoming exhibition SurfLand features 40+ tintypes of surfers taken by NY-based photographer, Joni Sternbach. Over the years surfers have been drawn to the unusual sight of Joni's portable darkroom and large format camera perched on the beaches of Montauk, San Diego, and Santa Cruz and have become volunteer/impromptu subjects for her portraits. Her method yields a survey of portraits that express an almost anthropological feel; a subculture of men, women, and children poised with their boards at the edge of the ocean. These luminescent images communicate a compelling magnetism and deep humanity that we are pleased to share with the public in, this, Joni Sternbach's first solo museum exhibition.
