THEE INDIGENTS

THEE INDIGENTS

WORDS BY CHOLO

I have been skating, hanging out, and running around with these guys for too long. Lloyd is the brains of the band, Sal is out there, Dean is the reliable drummer, and George is chill. Nowadays these guys are recording some new tunes. Maybe you’ve heard them on a Tower 13 compilation or checked out the new ol’84 video; they have a classic lick in there on Swanson’s part. Thee Indigents rock, so go check out the video and go skate.

SAL:

How long have you been skating?
About thirty years or so.

Where do you usually go skate?
Fullerton Skatepark, mostly. The kids are cool there. They remind me of when I was a kid skating SadLands.

Best trick/worst trick?
Surviving is my best trick. Smashing my knee is the worst.

What does the word “indigent” mean to you?
It means we’re needy, down on our luck.

Who’s the most indigent? Least indigent?
We’re all indigent in one way or another.

Function or fashion and why?
My fashions always function. Go to the thrift store, kiddies! Paying top dollar at the corner punk store is nowhere!

Who’s been a musical influence on you?
I guess you could start with T.S.O.L, Adolescents, The Crowd, The Damned, Slaughter and the Dogs, Bowie, Elvis Costello, Saints, Dead Boys, G.G. and the Jabbers.

Do you believe in UFOs?
That’s a silly question. I am a UFO! You know that!

Tell me a joke!
Did you hear about the person of the Polish persuasion that walked into a bar with a big pile of shit in his hand and said, “Hey, look what I almost stepped in.”

Last thanks.
Dagger, familia, Cholo, Cerda, Swanson, Ol’ 84, Rick at Hostage Records, Drac at Vinyl Solution, Peter “Action Man” Archer, skater bros old and new, and anybody else who needs it.

GEORGE:

How long have you been skating?
I don’t skate as much as I should, but I started when I was seven.

Where do you usually go skate?
A friend’s mini ramp.

Best trick/worst trick?
Finger flip lien to tail/ axle stall.

What does the word “indigent” mean to you?
Look at our front man…that’s indigent.

Who’s the most indigent? Least indigent?
Sal/ Dean (at least he thinks so).

Function or fashion and why?
Function; need music to live!

Who’s been a musical influence on you?
Crass, Subhumans (UK), Jimmy H., and Otis Redding.

Do you believe in UFOs?
Yes, if you saw my friends you would, too.

Tell me a joke!
Knock, knock…

Last thanks.
Cholo, Hostage Records, the real fans, and my family for not laughing at us.

LLOYD:

How long have you been skating?
Off and on since I was six years old, a long time.

Where do you usually go skate?
Fullerton Skatepark.

Best trick/worst trick?
Best is Monarail/Got’cha covered. Worst is waking up.

What does the word “indigent” mean to you?
Incapable of caring for one’s self.

Who’s the most indigent? Least indigent?
Sal/Dean.

Function or fashion and why?
Fashion can be functional. All my clothes were free.

Who’s been a musical influence on you?
Action man, The Who, Otis Redding…

Do you believe in UFOs?
Now I do! Thanks, Sal and Frankie.

Tell me a joke!
Dirty joke – white horse fell in a mud puddle.

Last thanks.
Stitches, Hostage Records, Cholo, Scott at Ol’ 84, Lisafer and Doug, Mark and Carly, Mario and Alana, Juice Magazine, Cudlipp, Swanson…the list will never end!

DEAN:

How long have you been skating?
21 years.

Where do you usually go skate?
Combi-pool.

Best trick/worst trick?
Backside Smith Grind/ Anything with a kick flip.

What does the word “indigent” mean to you?
Having friends with no jobs or money.

Who’s the most indigent? Least indigent?
Sal/ Me.

Function or fashion and why?
Fashion is for freaks with no self-esteem. Get a backbone.

Who’s been a musical influence on you?
Lloyd, Bad Brains, Old AC/DC…

Do you believe in UFOs?
Of course. How the fuck do you think Lloyd got here?

Tell me a joke!
Lloyd and Sal got jobs and…

Last thanks.
Randy Katen and the N-Men, Sacto crew for showing me what it’s all about, Sasha Steinhorst for picking up where Sacto left off, and Cholo for taking me to Skatopia and being real in a landscape of fakers.
