Skateboarders Bring New Life to Abandoned Seaside Resort

While Canada’s rugged, scenic East Coast might not immediately conjur images of skateboarding, it has become the stage for the latest film offering from Red Bull Media House. In one of the most highly anticipated skateboard films of the season, Last Resort Aspotogan follows 7 top skateboarders, including Ryan Decenzo (CAN), TJ Rogers (CAN) and Joey Brezinski (USA) as they transform an abandoned seaside resort hotel on Nova Scotia’s remote coast into a towering, three-story skate park.

Far from the typical all-inclusive vacation, director Alex Craig took over the resort site for seven days in early September working with renowned park builders, the Zenga Bros, to bring a truly unique vision of the hotel to life. Creating custom-built features using scrap materials found throughout the building, the new renovations for the project included a list of 5-star luxury amenities fit for any die-hard skater including smooth concrete ledges, manual pads and a completely custom-made concrete bowl set into the rugged coastline.

With limited vacancy, Canadian athletes Ryan Decenzo and TJ Rogers hand-selected an all-star crew to join them for the adventure including U.S athletes Joey Brezinski, Cody Lockwood, Nate Lacoste and more. The diversity of the athletes shows as each skater explores parts of the hotel that cater to their discipline; the technical flat-ground skating of Joey Brezinski, the classic transition/bowl riding of Portland native Cody Lockwood or the modern street-style of TJ Rogers as he attacks handrails and stairsets.

Filmed in full HD using feature-film grade equipment along with a rare vintage Panavision fisheye lens, every trick detail and particle of dust are captured in stunning clarity. With an artistic approach that explores the dynamic light and shadows found throughout the resort, the cold concrete is offset by the scenic splendor of the surrounding wilderness.

A first look Teaser is released today with the full-length video following on December 4th at redbull.com/skateboarding. Checkout #rblastresort on Twitter and Instagram for updates and images.

CHECKING IN: THE RESORT

Legendary Amid the wild, rugged scenery of the remote Nova Scotia coast, the seemingly forgotten resort hotel stands grey, unfinished and somewhat at odds with the surrounding wilderness. Originally designed as a 131 room luxury spa overlooking the ocean, construction on the resort began in 1991 but was never completed after financiers went bankrupt in 1993, having invested an estimated $20 million into the site. Ownership of the building has changed hands routinely since ground was first broken on the site, though no investors have ever seen the project through to completion. Now having laid dormant for 22 years, the building’s current skeletal form spans 175,000 square feet of smooth concrete spread across three floors. With no finishings installed, the bare concrete interior of the structure offered an ideal location for legendary skatepark builders the Zenga Brothers to let their imaginations run wild, constructing unique obstacles using many of the existing materials and features found throughout the building.

ROOM WITH A VIEW: THE VISION

Legendary Canadian skatepark builders the Zenga Brothers were enlisted with the task of bringing the unique vision for the resort to life. The team first visited the site in 2013 to investigage, mapping out spaces throughout the building suitable for the construction of new skateable features. Returning home to the West Coast, a scale model of the hotel was built in which the builders could explore various options for the placement of skate features. Using many of the existing elements of the resort such as stairs, ledges and rails, the Zenga Brothers also designed and built many of the custom features using scrap materials sourced throughout the resort such as air ducts and plywood, leftover since the resorts initial construction.
