Live Fast Die Fast is Long Island based band of bros that have that old school hardcore mentality of earn what you have and respect what came before you. No fronts with this band. They’re committed and drive out an aggressive and resounding riff every time. See them on Juice Sk8tracks Volume 4.
LIVE FAST DIE FAST
CONCEIVED: Summer 2008
WHERE: Long Island, NY
MUSICIAN NAME: Paul Turano
WHERE WERE YOU BORN?
I was born on the Long Island-Queens border.
WHAT ARE YOUR PARENTS LIKE?
My Dad is a hard headed, hardworking individual who was always supportive of whatever I chose to do with my life, as long as I stayed out of trouble. He gave me a long enough leash growing up, so that I was able to experience life. If I ever got in trouble though, it was over.
WHAT TABLE DID YOU SIT AT DURING LUNCH IN HIGH SCHOOL?
The one with my friends. It definitely wasn’t the stereotypical “cool table”, nor was it the “nerd table” but we had each other and that’s all it has ever been about to me.
HOW MUCH DO STEREOTYPES PLAY A ROLE IN YOUR LIFE TODAY?
Stereotypes don’t really play too much of a role in my personal life. I give people the benefit of the doubt at first. I know they exist because there is some truth to them, but I don’t go into meeting new people with a preconceived notion about what a person is “supposed” to be like. Nothing good comes from stereotyping people. You can miss out on some really great friendships if you group people together. Stereotyping is against everything that the hardcore scene is about. We created this scene because we didn’t fit in anywhere else, and now you see a lot of kids who stereotype and it just weakens what the message really is.
DID YOUR PARENTS SUPPORT YOUR CHOICE TO BE A MUSICIAN?
My Dad is a musician himself, so he was always supportive of it. My brother and I had bands growing up and it kept us out of trouble. But he always placed importance on school and work. So as long as music didn’t interfere with those things, he was OK with it. He even built us a small practice space in the basement of our house when we were growing up.
WOULD YOU HAVE PUT AN ALBUM OUT WITHOUT YOUR DAD?
Well since he didn’t sign us and pay for the record, I think we still would have put this record out. I don’t think that I would still be involved in music if it wasn’t for him though.
FAVORITE BAND YOU’VE OPENED FOR?
Ignite and Agnostic Front
ULTIMATE BAND TO OPEN FOR?
The Bouncing Souls. Lenny would say Morrissey.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE KIND OF FISH?
Sharks. Who doesn’t love Shark Week? Shrimp are delicious though.
COMPLETE THE ANALOGY
Shark Week is to Sharks as the LONG ISLAND PUNK ROCK BBQ is to me.
BEST BAND TO OPEN FOR YOU?
I can’t narrow it down to one. Gangway!, Haunted Hacienda, Ice Age, Loafass, Population Zero, and The Heels.
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE GIG?
Playing with Ignite and Grey Area at Webster Hall in NYC. It was a Black ‘N Blue production, so it was done right. The bands were great, the venue was awesome, the sound was incredible and the show ran on time.
DESCRIBE YOUR FIRST ROCKSTAR MOMENT?
We don’t take ourselves serious enough to have these. We played with DRI in NYC and we got stuffed in some ridiculously small dressing room with 4 other bands. By the end of the night we snuck all of our friends back there and were drinking free booze. When DRI was on stage, we ventured into their dressing room, just to see what it would be like. That was the closest we ever came to “rock-stardom”.
WHICH OF THE 7 DWARVES ARE YOU?
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BE IN A BAND?
The ability to constructively release and express a lot of pent up anger. When I first heard hardcore music, I knew it was where I was supposed to be. I was mad at the same things that these bands were mad at. I valued the same things that they valued. Things that are just on the surface for some people, run deeper for hardcore kids.
YOU’RE PASSIONATE ABOUT FAMILY AND LOYALTY. WHERE CAN FANS SEE THAT IN YOUR MUSIC?
I think the lyrics to “Times of Glory” best identify my passion for family. It’s a song about the love I have for my kids and the hard work that goes into being a father. As far as hearing the passion for being loyal, I think the first song on the record “Only the Strong Survive” and “Song Of Our Youth” speak about staying loyal to the hardcore scene and being appreciative for all it has given me.
WHO IS YOUR IDOL?
My grandfather. He went through so much during his lifetime and always stayed strong. Always put family first. We had nothing growing up. My father lost his job after the first nightmare that was the Presidency of George H.W. Bush in the 90’s. Things were tough. My grandfather always made sure we had what we needed, clothes, food. My brother and I were both wrestlers in high school and he never missed a match. He was a warrior, a WWII veteran. He raised his family when his father died at an early age. He buried 3 of his brothers. He fought up until his last breath and he instilled in my brother and I, the ability to never give up, no matter how rough life gets.
WHO DO YOU MOST ADMIRE AND WHY?
Martin Luther King Jr. I admire him for his passion for doing what he believed was right. Knowing that no matter what the other side threw at him, whether it was violence, threats, incarceration and ultimately death, he knew what he was doing was the just cause. Nothing was going to scare him or stop him. He was the voice for the people who had no voice. When you believe so deeply in something that you are willing to lay down and die for it, to me that’s true passion and love.
IF YOU HAD ONLY ONE THING YOU COULD SAY TO THE ENTIRE WORLD WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Stay true to yourself. Only you know when you’re being dishonest. Make the most of your time here with your family and friends. Life is precious.
