First Ventura City Skateboard Championships

We put on most of the first City Skateboard Championships in 1975, and almost every contest would produce a pearl of some sort, but the first Ventura City Skateboard Championships was fully packed with sucker punches to spare. This was a two-day contest on the road to the top of the hill overlooking the City of Ventura called “The Cross” – a popular hang out for devils and angels. Our freestyle area was flat and served the purpose. The race course was steep and we had to be able to stop the racers quickly and softly or sort of softly with mattresses. Saturday was smooth with everyone advancing in the correct and pro manner. Sunday around noon, in the middle of the freestyle semis, about six Hell’s Angels pulled up and stated that they were having a wedding up at the cross. We spread out as 300 HA hogs motored up the hill through the middle of the contest. During this display of horsepower and pre-marital bliss, I look over just in time to shoot Dale Smith squeezing through a tunnel of fur, a donkey, that came from where? When the procession ended and the contest restarted, the contest marshal, Nayo Jaime, informed me that an old pal of mine, Peter Fonda, was curbside and wanted to say hello. “Howdy, Jim, this is my daughter, Portia.” I said, “Pleasure to meet you, Portia. Did your dad tell you about smoking the peace pipe for the first time in Mammoth 1964?” Around this time, Ty Page literally rolls up in a Rolls Royce, steps out and is handed his skateboard by the chauffeur to do the deed. This was as Elvis as you could get. By the end of the day, we were truly spun and with a pile of situations that were permanently burned into our memory banks, the contest was a success as usual.
