There are many layers to Steve Olson, most of which people who don’t know him, will probably never know.

The most notable is Steve Olson, the skateboarder. An iconic figure in the world of skateboarding since the 1970’s, who still skates to this day.

Then there is Steve Olson, the artist. It’s probably no coincidence that his art is made up of layers as well. Layers of fish net stockings, fake fur, vinyl and potentially anything that’s lying around to present, for us, what Steve Olson, the man, thinks about social issues and of society in general, without having to really say it.

This past week Mark Baker, along with BlackBook, Vans, and C.i.5 hosted ‘Black Honky’, in New York City, featuring the art of Steve Olson.

Enter Steve Olson, the inexhaustible, frequent flyer, who had shown and attended Tony Alva’s ‘Die Posers Die’ show in Los Angeles last Saturday, the 9th, then flew to NYC to set up his own show, which would open on the 13th, and was back in California to attend, and judge, the ‘Pro-Tec Pool Party’, on the 16th.

Attending one of Olson’s shows, is like a sample sale of culture and counter culture… VIP guests for this show included: Mark Gonzales, Andy Kessler, JAMAL WILLIAMS, QUIM CARDONA, ALEX CORPORAN and Glen E. Friedman…

Skaters, punks, former punks, wanna-be skaters and wanna-be former punks, lurkers and actual celebrities will fill the space at any given opening.

But at the end of the day, no matter who is mugging with Olson, no matter where in the world he’s showing, Steve Olson, is a skateboarder. That, somehow, makes it ours and that makes better than anything else.

All The Best.
