FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – SANTA CRUZ SKATEBOARDS VETERANS DIVISION NEW VIDEO – ‘V-DAY‘ – The only thing that’s guaranteed in life is death and taxes… Video deadlines are open to a host of unforeseen dramas that can turn even the best laid plans to shit in seconds. ‘Hey Paul, I’ve got bad news, yesterday while filming my last trick for the video I blew out my knee’…E-mail received from Eric Dressen October 5th. This news of Eric’s knee followed news from V-Day senior filmer, Bart Saric, who a few weeks prior broke his collar bone and thumb in a high-speed follow-filming crash while getting Brian Lotti’s interview and footage. The only ‘good’ out of this was Bart was man enough to sacrifice his body to save his camera. Add to these a frenzy of last minute communication trying to get to the bottom of the music industry’s legal-ease concerning the network of charges paid out to vocalists unions, pensions paid to the estates of dead lead singers, musicians union fees, new use fees and a host of other BS charges and it becomes painfully obvious why most video productions never get legit permission to use music and why scheduled release dates for videos are pointless. ‘V-Day will now be released December 1, 2006… the good things in life are worth waiting for. ‘V-Day’ will include a bonus Soundtrack CD featuring ‘Cacti Widders’ (Tom Knox on drums), ‘The Highway Murderers’ owned by Jason Jessee, ‘The Adolescents’, ‘The Rabies’, ‘Excel’ and others to make this a must for every skate movie Collectors Library. NATE YEOMANS WINS THE MACY’S CALIFORNIA TRIFECTA SURF SERIES PRESENTED BY JEEP TITLE AND $10,000 BONUS – The 2006 Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series presented by Jeep concluded Sunday on the final day of the O’Neill Cold Water Classic presented by Jeep. Still reeling off his win at the Newport Beach Pro presented by Jeep, Nate Yeomans (San Clemente, Calif.) was able to earn enough points to squeak by Nathaniel Curran (Oxnard, Calif.) and become the 2006 Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series Champion. Going into the O’Neill Cold Water Classic, Yeomans trailed Dustin Cuizon (Ewa Beach, Hawaii) by only 90 points, and Curran was in third place contention trailing by 585 points. When Cuizon was knocked out of the event in the round of 64, it opened up the door for Yeomans and Curran to make a run for the Trifecta title. Yeomans and Curran found themselves going head-to-head in a quarterfinal heat with World Championship Tour (WCT) surfers Tim Reyes (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Roy Powers (Hanalei, Hawaii). Reyes and Curran advanced out of the heat while Yeomans finished third. Yeomans’ quarterfinal finish earned him enough points to overtake Cuizon for the lead but not enough to secure him the title. The pressure was on Curran – he needed to win the O’Neill Cold Water Classic in order to surpass Yeomans’ point total and win the $10,000 Trifecta overall points bonus. As the final heat wound down, Curran needed a wave score of 4.9 out of 10 to take the lead from Toby Martin (Sydney, AUS) making him the O’Neill Cold Water Classic and the Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series Champion. With seconds left in the heat, Curran caught a wave and was still up and riding as the final horn sounded. The crowd held it’s breath as the scores dropped in. Curran’s final wave scored a 4.5 leaving him just four tenths of a point out of first place and making Yeomans the 2006 Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series Champion. With just 45 points separating first and second, Yeomans’ 3,165 points total was enough to edge out O’Neill Cold Water Classic runner-up Curran with 3,120 overall points. Cuizon finished the Trifecta Series in third place with 2,913 overall points. The Trifecta, along with Action Sports Group (ASG) and ASP North America, awarded Yeomans, the overall points-winner a bonus of $10,000, Curran a second-place bonus of $3,500 and Cuizon a third-place bonus of $1,500. REEF NEWS – Valiere Conquers Sunset While Bourgeois Flares In Barbados – Reef’s own Evan Valiere and Ben Bourgeois secured major wins in world-class waves in different tropical settings. The first win came in as former WCT contender and ISA Junior World Champion, Ben Bourgeois slayed the competition at the ALAS Reef Latin Pro at Soup Bowls, Barbados. Barbados set the stage for the sixth stop on the Latin/Caribbean ALAS surfing tour, the only stop where the Latin based tour allows open entry to surfers from anywhere in the world. The throaty right – hander produced rippable, 2-4ft surf with a bit of onshore wind. Bourgeois, who is no stranger to tricky East Coast conditions took a liking to lumpy waves as he edged out the competition to secure the victory and $3K in his pocket. Notable mention goes out to Reef team riders Gabby Escudero (Puerto Rico) who secured a 2nd place finish and Russell Winter (United Kingdom) who earned a 4th place finish. Crossing the continent over to the Hawaiian Islands, Reef team rider, Evan Valiere recently took home $10K and 1500 valuable WQS rating points by winning the 2006 Xcel Pro in perfect 4-6 foot Sunset Beach. The 22-year-old Hawaiian was the only goofy foot surfer to advance past the quarterfinals, which many claim was the most intense heat within the competition. Valiere was able to take down Maui boy and 2005 Xcel Pro finalist, Hank Gaskell and defending champ Ian Walsh. Valiere’s winning ride came with just over 4 minutes left to go in the final as he took off on a solid 5-foot bomb across the point. The young Hawaiian dropped in with impeccable form as he grabbed his rail and proceeded to pig dog his way through a high-line barrel. After disappearing under the Sunset curtain, Valiere came flying out only to lay down two, massive cutbacks creating frenzy on the beach and series of impressed looks across the judge’s faces. Needless to say, Valiere’s outstanding efforts earned him the title of 2006 Xcel Pro Champion. After humbly accepting his award, Valiere remarked, ‘I just had a Bob Marley concert stuck in my head out there. It was ‘Live in Berkley, ’79’, the music just put me in a good vibe.’ Congratulations to Ben Bourgeois: Reef Latin Pro Barbados Champion and to Evan Valiere: 2007 Xcel Pro Sunset Beach Champion.

SURFRIDER FOUNDATION NEWS – Big Malibu Protest Against Proposed Offshore LNG Terminal… A big crowd of surfers and protestors gathered last month at Surfrider Beach in Malibu in a demonstration against the proposed, large, offshore liquefied natural gas terminal that would be built 14 miles off the coast between Oxnard and Malibu. The large Australian company BHP Billiton has proposed to construct a 300 feet long, 13 stories tall floating terminal platform that would be used for unloading liquefied natural gas from ships. The gas would be heated and then piped to shore. SAVE TRESTLES – By now many of you may have heard or read about the Surfrider Foundation’s campaign to save Trestles. Surfrider Foundation. Located on the border of Orange and San Diego counties, the breaks at Trestles, including Uppers, Lowers, Cotton’s, Middles, and Church, are California surfing at its best. The world-class peaks are accessible by footpaths that wind along Southern California’s last unspoiled coastal creek. The Orange County Transportation Corridor Agency is now seeking to build a multi-lane toll highway down this unique and special watershed, and directly through the heart of San Onofre State Beach Park. If constructed as planned, this toll road project will result in profound devastation to our State Park resources, surf break and the sensitive environment along the San Mateo Creek watershed, including:

Permanent closure of 60% of San Onofre State Beach Park Area
Abandonment of San Onofre State Beach Park’s 161 site San Mateo Creek Campground
Destruction of habitat critical to 11 federally designated endangered or threatened species, including the Southern Steelhead Trout
Irreparable damage to seven archaeological sites, including one Native American site
Degradation to the water quality throughout San Mateo Creek, as well as the coastal areas along Trestles and San Onofre State Beach
Possible significant impacts to the quality of the surf breaks at Trestles

This is one of the very last natural coastal areas available to the public in southern California, and needs to be protected at all costs! Save Trestles To win this vital campaign to Save Trestles, we need your help. With mounting legal costs as well as the need to further fund our grassroots efforts, your support is imperative. You can help save it. Questions, comments or concerns? Email us at membership@surfrider.org or call us toll-free at 1-800-743-SURF.
