DWINDLE DISTRIBUTION NEWS –  We can’t keep our plan a secret anymore. Dwindle Distribution is producing skateboard decks in China. For months now, we at Dwindle have had to sit by silently and listen to all the rumors, all the mudslinging, and all the false claims from those who wish they’d done it first or who have been misinformed. Now that we have finally perfected our process, it’s time to set the record straight. It’s time to explain what Dwindle is doing and how this is going to help skaters, retailers and the industry to further grow and develop skateboarding. For the past three years, under the direction of Rodney Mullen, Dwindle Distribution has developed a secret weapon – The state of the art, Chinese production facility we call Chop Chop Wood Shop. For a quarter of a century, Rodney Mullen has arguably done more to usher us into the modern skateboard era than anyone. The combination of his freakish technical and innovative skills on a skateboard with his grade-A Nerd qualifications make him an ideal candidate to spearhead the team of experts we assembled to create Chop Chop Wood Shop. Decades’ worth of experience from skate industry wood shop legends, materials scientists, industrial adhesives gurus, veneering specialists, as well as aerospace CAD/CAM technologists, form the foundation of Chop Chop. ‘For my entire pro career, I have had to handpick every deck I ride from general production ‘feeling comfortable on only 1 of 5 decks. With Chop Chop, this is the first time in my career I can pick any production deck and ride it with complete comfort. There’s no way I could go back’ – Rodney Mullen. Through Chop Chop, Dwindle is able to provide a superior Canadian Maple board that is a more affordable product for skaters. In addition Chop Chop Wood Shop enables us to accelerate technical advancements in skateboard decks, and bolster the broader US and international retail markets for skateboards. Effective November 1, Dwindle Distribution, will be lowering the wholesale pricing of all its brands to pass this production advantage on to skaters and retailers alike. Why is the price being lowered? It would be tempting for us at Dwindle to hang on to this competitive advantage and keep this production savings in extra margin for our own company. While short term this may help us out, long term it doesn’t help skaters and it doesn’t help the skate industry. The branded skateboard market is where it is today because in the current economic environment it is clear that skaters have become incredibly price sensitive and want more affordable quality product. In addition, for too long, retail margins have been too low and unsustainable on skateboard decks. Simply put, wholesalers have not given the retailer enough chance to make good money on a product critical to a board sport retailer. Skateboarding needs aggressive moves and innovation to continue to grow. Consequently, Dwindle wants to pass this price advantage on to skaters and retailers alike by lowering the prices on Almost, Blind, Darkstar, Enjoi and World skateboard decks. Dwindle is doing this to ensure that skateboarding and our businesses grow into the future. Why is Dwindle doing this? Quite simply, Dwindle has always strived to be the market leader in skate product, brands, and market development. The move to set up Chop Chop Wood Shop only further enforces this position as an industry leader. Chop Chop enables Dwindle to better control our current product quality and develop new advanced products. All this, while simultaneously lowering the price on existing skate deck products. Our competitors are scrambling to develop Chinese or offshore sourcing of skateboard decks. However, they’re behind the game. We started earlier, invested significantly more and are on a mission to see Chop Chop Wood Shop get the recognition it deserves as the world’s premier wood shop for board sports’ production. Undoubtedly, this is the birth of a new era of skateboarding. And for the tech freaks out there – some words from Rodney Mullen. Laying the Foundations of Chop Chop Wood Shop. The fundamental challenge in developing anything for skateboarding is translating what ‘feels best’ to professionals into the technical language involved with any manufacturing and design process. This hurdle, along with costing issues, is the key reason why skateboard technology has been stagnant for decades while nearly every other related field has progressed at exponential rates. We firmly believe there is no other wood shop in the US or Europe that has gone to the same extremes from the conceptual and procedural planning all the way down to the individual labor built into each and every deck. No one consistently recreates what the pros demand better than Chop Chop… We can now afford to take advantage of the vast technological resources already in existence and raise the bar of revolutionary high performance decks, all at reasonable prices so that skateboarding can continue to progress. Sincerely yours, Bob Sayre – Dwindle Distribution – BobSayre@Dwindle .com – (310) 297-1550 For the rest of the story visit www.dwindle.com/chopchop.

USA SKATEBOARD MANUFACTURERS UPDATE – On Oct 30, 2003 a meeting was held with some of the USA Skateboard Manufacturers about how to handle the recently announced onslaught of imported skateboards made in China by American board companies. Those attending the meeting included – Jim Gray, John Falahee, Rob Dykema, Charlie Watson, Phil, Louie, and Lorie from Prime, Craig from Vision/Select, Karl Spaeth from Geometric, and listening on the phone was Marc Pelland from Woodchuck in Canada. In the days prior to the meeting Gray had contact with both Reggie Church and Jeff Madrid from California Skate Factory/Clearwood, Jerry Madrid from Madrid Pro Designs, Chris Atchison from South Central Skateboard Manufacturing, Brent and Henry from Systems Manufacturing, Mark Schmid from Syndrome, and Grant from Bareback/BBS. Greg Chapman of Chapman Skateboards was contacted about the meeting but he was home with a new baby. Paul Schmitt and George Powell were contacted but did not respond. The topics discussed included the recent press release from Dwindle Distribution and the improper labeling that’s been going on with imported skateboards. ‘Thousands of decks have been imported into the USA in the last couple of years, without ‘Made in China’ stickers and are being sold in our market. Everyone at the meeting agreed to move forward and research the most effective way to enforce proper labeling by contacting the US Customs folks and Federal Trade Commission. It has been brought up that this mislabeling is very much against the law, and subject to fines, and these may be even more intense due to the fact that these products are being marketed to minors.’ The need for some standards set specific to skateboarding products was also discussed. There was talk of making t-shirts as well as an underground sticker campaign featuring slogans like ‘Friends Don’t Let Friends Ride Chinese Skateboards’, or ‘Riding a Chinese Skateboard Should be a Crime’. Also discussed at the meeting were the quality/mineral content/softness of Canadian Maple Vs. the US Maple most of US manufacturers buy. The results of the meeting indicated that this group of U.S.A. skateboard manufacturers are 100% ready to go to war. Another meeting will be scheduled within the next few weeks. PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT FROM JUICE MAGAZINE

Quote from Juice Magazine – Issue #50 – Interview with JELLO BIAFRA by Ray Flores

Ray Flores: “Skateboards have always been traditionally made in the United States. It’s one of the few products that’s actually made entirely in the US. Now there are some entrepreneurial types that are making their skateboards in China. What do you think about that?”

Jello Biafra: “There are lots and lots of motorcycle riders out there who won’t ride anything but a Harley. And it’s not just the outlaw bikers. It doesn’t matter if the thing is more expensive or whatever, they want something that was made here and made right. If you want to own something with a soul and a piece of history you’ve got to keep supporting the pioneers…”

In addition, live, on-stage performances from twelve bands (including Simple Plan), exhibits from leading action sports manufacturers showcasing the latest products, break dancing competitions, graffiti art competitions, a public skatepark and athlete autograph signings will make the Championships the most thrilling and unique event of the season. More than 200 of the world’s best action sports athletes, including names like Chad Muska, Eric Koston, Mark Appleyard, Tony Trujillo, Chris Senn, Ryan Sheckler, Rune Glifberg and Bucky Lasek, are expected to compete on custom built ramps and courses for the title of U.S. Champion. More than $650,000 in cash and prizes will be offered, making the LG Action Sports Championships the largest per discipline prize purse in action sports history. The LG Action Sports Championships merges together four of the industry’s biggest competitions under one large-scale umbrella event: the U.S. Skateboarding Championships, the U.S. Championships of BMX, the ASA World Championships and the World Championships of Freestyle Motocross. Each sport will run its season-ending Championships over an exclusive two-day period so that each sport gets its own ‘time in the sun’ and the athletes are not forced to share the ramps, practice time, TV exposure and crowds. ‘There’s never been an event like this in action sports history,’ said Rick Bratman, president of ASA Events, producer of the LG Action Sports Championships. ‘Not only are we providing the biggest prize purse these riders have ever seen, but we also allowed the athletes themselves to design virtually all aspects of the event, including the courses, prize money breakdown, competition formats and qualifying criteria.’ Bratman added, ‘We worked hard to develop a fun event for the athletes, the action sports industry and the fans so that we can celebrate the incredible people that have turned action sports into a global phenomenon.’ Throughout the nine-day event, the LG Action Sports Championships will feature ‘The Yard’ and the ‘Festival Village’. ‘The Yard’ is an urban culture zone that will contain graffiti art, DJ’s and break dancing competitions. The ‘Festival Village’ includes live music (complete line-up to be announced soon), video games, action sports video premieres, Internet stations, pro autograph signings, an industry expo where leading manufacturers will be showcasing the latest action sports products, and an open skatepark where skateboarders can skate the same course used by the pros. The LG Action Sports Championships will be televised on Fox Sports during a minimum of 18 hours of programming in the U.S. from November 28 – January 3 and will be seen in 180 countries worldwide. LORDS OF DOGTOWN UPDATE – ‘Lords of Dogtown’ update… The upcoming feature film based on the lives of the Zephyr Competition team (specifically Stacy Peralta, Tony Alva, and Jay Adams) is back in play after a revolving door of directors. Originally, it was rumored that Stacy Peralta, who wrote the script, might hop into the director’s role. Then there was the shocking announcement that Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst would direct ‘Lords of Dogtown’. Next came the news that David Fincher (‘Seven’, ‘Panic Room’, ‘Fight Club’) would direct as well as produce the project. After spending quite a sum on location scouting in Mexico for a spot to rebuild the POP pier, Fincher returned to LA and decided instead to work on a new movie for Dreamworks entitled ‘The Lookout’. When the rumors began that the ‘Lords of Dogtown’ project, produced by David Fincher, Art and John Linson, was again heating up, speculation over the directorial role was endless. In October 2003, the trades announced Catherine Hardwicke as the director of ‘L.O.D.’. Her experience as the set designer for ‘Thrashin’ and as director of the critically acclaimed ‘Thirteen’ are just the beginning of her indie film credentials. Add the fact that she just won the Director’s Award at the Sundance Film Festival for her directorial and screenwriting debut with ‘Thirteen’, as did her compadre Stacy Peralta with ‘Dogtown and Z-Boys’ and let the games begin… again. The original script for ‘LOD’ has been rewritten by Roger Avary of ‘Pulp Fiction’ fame but Hardwicke herself has been rewriting the screenplay and has been spending time jetting between LA, Oceanside and Honolulu to meet with the Z-Boys (and girl) in person in efforts to round out the characters and come up with a few more female roles. The film will be distributed by Sony/Columbia Pictures.

RIDING GIANTS – Stacy Peralta has been hosting private screenings of his new surf movie project featuring a slew of big wave warriors ranging from Greg Noll to Laird Hamilton. The flick is also features the legendary Darrick Doerner, Titus Kinimaka, Brian Keaulana and Dave Kalama. Last week, Jeff Ho interviewed Laird Hamilton about the new film along with many other topics for the upcoming 10 year anniversary issue of Juice Magazine.

JUICE MAGAZINE – ‘Juice Magazine’ has been making the news… the ‘LA Business Journal’ wrote a feature story on how Juice Magazine successfully stopped Pony International from committing infringement against the Juice Magazine trademark last month. The day after the erroneous announcement of a launch of ‘Pony’s Juice Magazine’, the magazine was retitled and a retraction was printed in all of the trade publications and AP Newswire services. ‘Executive Sports Weekly’ also ran a similar story. That was quickly followed by a slew of international ‘Juice Magazine’ coverage including a profile in the ‘Made in the USA’ issue of Japanese magazine ‘Free and Easy’. Juice Magazine will also be featured on Finnish television show ‘Sessions’ which features surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding and music, scheduled to air next month. French magazine ‘The Source’ and the Italian skate magazine ‘Bosc’ will also be featuring stories on the Juice Magazine 10 year anniversary issue.
