“It’s like a perfect little blue room with a window.”
Hey. Are you getting ready for school?
Yeah.
How are you doing in school?
Good.
What grade are you in?
Eighth.
How do you like your teachers?
They’re all pretty nice.
I saw your full page photo in Surfer magazine. Did that change anything for you?
In what perspective?
Are you more popular with the girls now?
[Laughs] I’ve always been popular with the girls.
[Laughs] I figured as much. When did you start surfing?
When I was three.
Who made your first surfboard?
I got it from John John. I don’t know where John John got it. I got his old board when he got a new one.
You got the hand-me-downs. You can talk to big Nathan [Fletcher] about that, huh?
[Laughs] Yeah.
What’s your favorite break?
Pupukea and Pipe.
Where are your favorite places to skate?
I like Hawaii kai in town and Steve’s bowl on the North Shore.
You’ve skated in a lot of different places all over the world. How was it to skate in Scotland?
It was really good. That’s one of my favorite places, too.
Have you been surfing a quad?
I have a quad, but I haven’t been surfing lately. I’ve just been skateboarding. The waves have been super flat.
What do you see in the tube?
It’s like a perfect little blue room with a window.
What do you hear?
“Crrrrsssh” and then a big crash.
Who are your favorite surfers?
I like my mom, Nathan [Fletcher], Christian [Fletcher], Tom Curren, Matt Archbold, Kelly Slater, and Andy and Bruce Irons.
