The Foundation focuses on working with local officials and grassroots, community-based organizations that plan to hire designers and contractors with strong experience designing and building skateparks. The Tony Hawk Foundation was established by a gift from Tony Hawk. Its directors raise additional funds through events, industry donations, and continuing contributions from Tony and other entities. In addition to skateparks, the Foundation also makes donations to other children-related charities, as chosen by its Board Of Directors. ZOO YORK PITCHES IN TO OPEN PRIVATE INDOOR SKATE SPOT IN BROOKLYN – MT. WEATHER – For the third year in a row, NYC’s tight-knit skateboarding community has banded together to open a private indoor training facility. Located next to the Autumn Bowl in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, the aptly named Mt. Weather is now open for shredding, and its purpose is simple; to provide a dry, heated indoor spot to keep NYC’s skateboarding scene alive when rotten East Coast weather strikes. Mt. Weather was made possible through generous support from Zoo York, Red Bull, Volcom, and 5boro Skateboards. This much needed TF features a streamlined street course, and it’s easily accessible from Manhattan. Like past years, Mt. Weather is being run as a co-op where, in addition to the aforementioned sponsors, individual key holders contributed money to help cover rent, ramp materials, and other expenses. In return, key holders enjoy round-the-clock access to Mt. Weather. Therefore, to skate this coveted spot you either need your own key or a friend with a key. That’s it, that’s the only way in. So start pulling favors now before it’s too late… Mt. Weather will remain open through the middle of May.

MARK APPLEYARD and GEOFF ROWLEY have left the Active team due to differences of opinion with Active. The rest of that story is sure to be told.

SKATEARK FUNDRAISER – Bennett, Colorado is a small plains community situated 30 miles to the east of Denver. Some years ago, the local skaters raised $5,000 to construct a small skatepark, which was built by members of the community. Today, the park is in bad shape. The metal mini ramp is rusted, warped, and dangerous, the slab is cracked, and the pyramid has a hole the size of a softball at the top of it. So, the skaters of Bennett, the Colorado Coalition for Public Skateparks (CCPS), and the town have teamed up to rebuild the park, and to do it with the same DIY ethic the people of Bennett have always had. Members of Team Pain’s concrete crew have volunteered their time and labor to this project, so the new park is sure to be one of Colorado’s best. The park renovations call for a real pool replica, complete with pool coping, tiles, and shallow end stairs, as well as a street course. Your donation to the ‘Town of Bennett / Skatepark’ fund will be used entirely for materials, as all labor will be donated by local skateboarders, professional skatepark builders, and the town’s people. Your donation will give the skaters of Bennett the opportunity to skate at a world class skatepark in a town where youth activities are desperately needed. You can make checks payable to ‘Town of Bennett / Skatepark’ and send them to: Town of Bennett Attn: Skatepark Fund 355 4th St. Bennett, CO 80102-7809. Customized 3×3′ pool tiles are also available for sale through the CCPS website. You can purchase a single tile for $40 or an entire linear foot (8 tiles) for $300. Your tile will be laser engraved with any design of your choosing. These tiles will be installed in the pool replica of the new park. Its a great opportunity to advertise your business, website, or just, simply, represent DIY skateboarding. Buy tiles at www.coloradoskateparks.org/ccps_donate.html. CCPS and the town have raised over $13,000 to date, including a $5,000 Tony Hawk Foundation grant. We have also secured some material and equipment donations. However, we need to raise $7,000-9,000 more in order to complete the park. We are offering to name the pool after any skate related company that is willing to donate $5,000 or more to the park. With this donation the company will receive 20 linear feet of pool tiles (160 tiles) engraved in any way that they choose. Please email ash@coloradoskateparks.org with any questions.
