SURF CONTEST – The ‘Subaru of Jacksonville 23rd Annual WaveMasters Contest’ is Florida’s most prestigious open amateur surf event. This year, to kick off the contest, on Friday, May 5, at the oceanfront venue Seawalk Pavilion, there will be an outdoor surf festival with booths and displays. Then at 9 pm, ‘The Endless Summer’ will play to an outdoor crowd of over 5,000 people. Celebrity guest appearances will include Robert August, star of the film. For more go to www.wavemasters.org.

BPSA UK Tour to Commence the O’Neill Highland Open – The 2nd leg of the BPSA UK Tour takes place from April 23-24, 2006, with the O’Neill Scottish BPSA Challenge at the legendary Thurso East. The O’Neill Scottish BPSA Challenge will precede the 5 Star WQS O’Neill Highland Open Event and is a two day event with a 1 star rating. The event will also offer a wild card place into the 5 Star WQS for the highest rated Scottish Surfer, giving him the chance to pit home break knowledge against the best in the World. Also confirmed for this event is the UK’s most successful competition surfer, Russell Winter! Thurso East breaks over kelp covered slate reef for 50 – 100 metres and is a World class break. Brimms Ness Bowl, just around the corner, picks up any swell available and can be 4ft even when Thurso is flat. Other quality breaks in the region, that can be used for competition include Castletown, Murkle and Sandside Bay. The main difference to the event for 2006 is the time of year. If the competitors found the water cold at the last BPSA stop in Croyde for the Saltrock Open, they are in for a shock. This is one of the factors that make this such an interesting event with temperatures resting at a chilly 8 degrees. Elsewhere at the event, Foster’s will be bringing their beer and their Barbie to feed and ‘water’ the competitorsas well as putting on a killer party at Thurso’s legendary Skinandi’s Nightclub! Freerange will be around as always. This event’s move will be best barrel. Micah Lester got it last year, who will take home the extra cash this time? Massive thanks goes out to all the sponsors, especially O’Neill as title sponsors and tour sponsors Foster’s and Freerange Sports Optics.

O’NEILL HIGHLAND PRO UPDATE – Reef’s Russel Winter Wins the O’Neill Highland Pro with a Perfect 10 – In conditions described as ‘skyscraper high, and icy cold’, British born Russel Winter scored a unanimous perfect 10 in familiar waters to win the 5* WQS O’Neill Highland Pro at Brims Ness in Scotland. Russel pocketed $12,000 for the victory, as well as 2000 valuable QS points. Still elated from his fresh win at the O’Neill Scottish open the week prior, Winter ripped through the quarters and semis, dispatching Luke Munro and Kieren Perrow to put him through to the finals. The stage was set for a nail-biter against Brazilian Bernardo Miranda, however Russ was surfing at his absolute best on his home turf in front of friends and family. Russel’s piece de resistance came with about 10 minutes left on the clock, when he pulled into a massive barrel. The crowd on the shore grew anxious the longer he was inside, until at last he shot out of the tube, waving his arms with pure exhilaration. The judges scores were unanimous – a perfect 10. PEARL JAM PITCHES IN TO HELP SAVE TRESTLES – The Surfrider Foundation today announced that the Vitalogy Foundation will be donating $1.00 from every ticket sold for Pearl Jam’s upcoming Los Angeles concert to help with the organization’s Save Trestles campaign. The donation will be made in memory of longtime band friend and Surfrider Foundation activist Dave ‘the Rapscallion’ Russell. This is made possible by Pearl Jam’s agreement to contribute a portion of its ticket sales to the Vitalogy Foundation in support of local charities. Pearl Jam will be performing at the Forum in Los Angeles on July 9th and 10th, with special guests Sonic Youth. Proceeds from the show will go to assist the Surfrider Foundation in their efforts to stop a proposed toll road project that threatens both San Onofre State Beach and the world class surf break at Trestles. The project is being undertaken by a private company, the Transportation Corridor Agency, who was recently named in a lawsuit filed by the California State’s Attorney General’s office. Separate lawsuits were also filed by the Surfrider Foundation and its partners, and the Native American Heritage Commission. ‘This project would profoundly compromise Southern California’s last remaining, unimpeded coastal watershed,’ says Matt McClain, Surfrider Foundation spokesperson. ‘It not only harms our State Park and surfing resources, but significantly jeopardizes the eleven threatened or endangered species that call San Mateo Creek home.’ The donation will be made in the name of Dave Russell. Russell, a long-time Surfrider Foundation activist, lost his fight with a rare form of thyroid cancer on February 1st, 2006 at the age of 39. Dave’s tireless energy and passion for surfing, filmmaking and environmental activism made him an irreplaceable asset to the San Diego surfing community. In addition to his contributions to various surf films on the resurgence of post-modern surfboard designs, Dave was also in the process of documenting the history of the Surfrider Foundation when the cancer was discovered. For more information on Pearl Jam or their upcoming tour, please go to www.pearljam.com.
