411VM SKATEBOARDING PRESENTS THE BRAZIL ISSUE! Fountain Valley, CA (411 Productions) – May 3, 2004: Thanks to an incredible rise in global media attention, skateboarding has witnessed some of the most diverse and incredible talent popping up in all four corners of the Earth. Of all the international scenes known for producing amazing skateboarders, Brazil definitely stands out as leader for the present and future. 411 Productions felt it was time to showcase a few of Brazil’s amazing talents. 411VM Skateboarding Issue 64 kicks off with one of the true global ambassadors for skateboarding, Bob Burnquist. Bob hosts the issue, takes us on a Spot Check of his famous back yard skatepark, and leads us into a Controlled Chaos segment featuring Carlos de Andrade, Adelmo Jr., Fabio Cristiano, and Rodrigo Lima. The Brazil issue Hot Wheels is simply shocking. Rodrigo Petersen, Cezar Gordo, and Alex Carolino put their stamp on what is probably the single greatest display of young Brazilian talent to date. Following up on the Hot Wheels segment, another Brazilian Am Andre Genovesi comes correct with a Wheels of Fortune. Fabrizio Santos has an amazing Profile, contrasting and comparing life in both Brazil and California. Firm pro Rodrigo Teixeira checks in with a Day in the Life in his hometown of Sao Paulo. Come along with TX and friends as they show us some incredible local spots and visit Siglio, a skate shop owned by Rodrigo’s brother. The rain puts a stop to their skating, but not before Rodrigo and crew put it down on some of the local ledges. If this segment doesn’t have you digging out your passport, nothing will. Issue 64 wraps up with Profiles from Nilton Neves and Og de Souza. Nilton is all smiles as he cruises through any terrain and takes advantage of his chance to speak about his good friend, Og de Souza. This segment may be the single most compelling article 411 has ever put together. Once you’ve seen what Og can do without the use of his legs, and the obvious joy he takes from his family, friends, and skateboarding, your view of personal limitations will never be the same. Once again, DVD viewers are rewarded with a great deal – bonus footage includes Desafia de Rua and Qix Contests, Iapi Spot Check, and tons more. Plus every DVD comes with a FREE BONUS DISC featuring Brazilian skaters from your favorite 411VM Skateboarding videos. Over 2 hours of skateboarding with every DVD! Get ready to discover a ton of amazing talent in 411VM Skateboarding issue 64, the Brazil issue – every team manager will be watching this one. You can find your copy on DVD in skateboard shops around the world on June 1, 2004! Visit 411 on the Web at: www.411vm.com.

BALLARD BOWL NEEDS YOUR HELP. SPEAK UP! MAKE A STATEMENT! SAVE A SKATEPARK!!!…. NEWS FROM THE PUGET SOUND SKATEPARKS ASSOCIATION… It seems as though the local Ballard Chamber of Commerce and various business interests are keen to see the beloved Ballard bowl go the way of the dodo in favor of a neighboring private townhouse development. We’ve gone a long way to organize and fight to protect it. We’ve formed the Puget Sound Skateparks Association, gained massive local media attention, and even landed support from the President of the City Council and one of our Congressmen. We’ve received emails from local skate organizations across the country telling us that they’re watching what happens here in Seattle and are looking at it as a precedent for future efforts. The final decision will be made on May 13th by the Parks Commissioner Ken Bounds. We’re staging a ‘1000 Skater March’ rally and march to city hall on May 15th to either celebrate or protest the decision. There will be a ton of press, and this promises to be a milestone event in skateboarding history. WE ARE LOOKING FOR PRO SKATEBOARDERS TO SPEAK ON THE PODIUM AT CITY HALL AT THE END OF OUR MARCH THROUGH SEATTLE’S CITY STREETS. WRITTEN STATEMENTS WOULD OF COURSE BE COOL FOR PEOPLE THAT CANT MAKE IT ALL THE WAY TO SEATTLE. Our program includes someone from the music community, someone close to the Mayor, someone from the PSSA, and a keynote. The theme of the speeches will revolve around the role of skaters to get involved in their communities and to work hard to make the world a better and safer place to skate. Show up and speak up.For more information check out the PSSA site: www.pugetsoundskateparks.org.

PRESS RELEASE – BALLARD BOWL BENEFIT – Puget Sound Skatepark Association (PSSA) Skaters and Skate Supporters March on City Hall — Saturday, May 15 – It’s not that unusual to see skateboarders surreptitiously tear down the streets of Seattle, one eye watching the pavement and one eye watching for the law. But on Saturday, May 15, hundreds of skateboarders will legally take to the streets in a skate march on City Hall. Coordinated by the Puget Sound Skateparks Association (PSSA) the march will travel down 5th Avenue to mark the two-year anniversary of the famed Ballard Bowl Skatepark and to draw attention to the need for more skateparks in Seattle and the need to save the Ballard Bowl. ‘The skateboard community is severely underserved,’ says Jason Harrison, the founder of PSSA. ‘Seattle has only two skateboard parks and one of them – the Ballard Bowl – is threatened with demolition to make way for a passive park. It doesn’t make sense to destroy something that serves the community so well, especially when there is such a shortage of skateparks and an obvious user demand. ‘When you consider that Seattle has more than 200 athletic fields, 50+ basketball courts and 10 swimming pools, it’s obvious that skaters have been left out of the loop,’ Harrison adds. What: Skate March on City Hall When: Saturday, May 15. March Start Time: 12:30 pm. Where: Starts at SeaSkate Park, 5th Avenue North and Republican Street Route: Travels from north to south on 5th Avenue to City Hall. Arrive at City Hall: 1:30 pm (600 4th Avenue – entrance on 5th Avenue) Activities: Celebrity skaters and musician appearances, speeches and special surprises. The march on City Hall is just the beginning of an all-day celebration. From 3 pm to 7 pm, a free, all ages show happens at the Funhouse, 206 5th Avenue North, with The Fakies, The Briefs, The F*cking Chaichis, and more. The festivities then move to Ballard with a show at the Sunset Tavern, 5433 Ballard Avenue, from 9 pm to 2am. On the bill: Mudhoney, The Spits, Tyco Party, The Fakies and The Wild Hairs (an amazing kid punk band from Bainbridge Island, featuring an 11 year old and a 13-year-old). Tickets are $10. You must be 21+ to attend the Sunset show. The skaters have proven that they can organize with finesse. PSSA members collected 4000 signatures in a petition drive to save the Ballard Bowl. Among their supporters they count Jan Drago, president of the Seattle City Council, and Congressman Jim McDermott. At previous fundraising events more than $2000 was raised and skaters gathered 175 pounds of canned food for the Ballard Food Bank. More than a dozen skaters volunteered for the recent Ballard Spring Clean-up Day in March. They’ve lead local politicos on tours of the bowl and have garnered wide-spread media coverage, including TV, print and radio. The Ballard Skate Bowl and street course was built nearly two years ago with the help of grants and community volunteers (kids and adults) donating their labor and efforts. The bowl is valued between $50,000 to $70,000. Some members of the Ballard Chamber of Commerce oppose the inclusion of the skate bowl into the proposed $2.4 million dollar park that is set to be built in Ballard in 2005. Also opposed to the skatepark is the private developer of a mixed use retail/residential property slated for construction adjacent to the new park. At a public hearing on April 8, Seattle Park Commissioners heard two hours of testimony from the community. The overwhelming majority of testimony presented favored retaining the existing Ballard skate bowl and street course. The Park Commissioners make a formal recommendation to Park Superintendent, Ken Bounds, on May 13. For more info go to http://www.sleestak.net and http://www.pugetsoundskateparks.org

International Association of Skateboard Companies Summary Update 3.2004… Most of all of 2003 the board of directors of IASC met in a windowless back storage room of Vans skatepark thankfully to the courtesy Steve Van Doren and Vans of course. We have upped the anti a bit and have had two meetings at the end of the Huntington Beach Pier. The most recent it was a somewhat foggy day with good surf, which was a nice change. Besides the normal group we had Paul Schmitt of P.S. Stix, member company as well as Paul volunteering to the Skatepark Development Committee, Jim Gray of new member company, ABC Board Supply, also participating on the Skatepark Committee and Johnny Shillereff of member company, Element skateboards, all in attendance. No time was wasted and we dived immediately in to the agenda. All in attendance are busy people with other responsibilities so time is always of the essence…. New Board of Directors… Back before ASR spring 2004 ballots were sent out to replace Rob Valerio as a board of director to all member companies. Nominees were requested and was followed up with ballots by mail to vote upon by the member companies. Results were tallied by an outside independent, accounting firm. IASC welcomes Johnny Shillereff of Element Skateboards to the Board of Directors. Rob Valerio willingly will continue to volunteer on the Finance Committee. He has been a great asset to IASC’s invigorating jump-start of 2003. One note, only fifteen of the eligible member companies participated in this vote…. Executive Officers – Since the election of the new B.O.D.s in early 2003 we had yet to vote upon a Executive Committee for IASC. The E.C. is the operations facilitators (hands on responsibilities) of any organization, whereas, B.O.D.s by definition serve a more of a directive role. We went through the voting process which resulted with; Bod Boyle as Secretary, Per Welinder as Vice President and myself as Chairman. Paul Schmitt suggested a change to the bylaws, which currently states that Executive Officers must be a Board of Director, to allow non B.O.D.s to be eligible to hold Executive Officer positions. Thus, in order, to additionally diversify the talents and abilities of IASC. We all agreed and changes are in effect…. Volunteer to a Committee – Currently we have several committees to address different issues. Committee heads are responsible to research issues, suggest action on said issues and present to the board. Discussion then takes place and if necessary a vote is taken on the attack method that IASC shall take in order to accomplish results. This vote may be done by the board solely or if critical require a vote for action by all member companies. I know this sounds all political somewhat and to an extent, it is. It is the democratic process. But committees are what get things done and makes us an effective, decisive and formidable action group. Approved Committees we have currently are: Skateparks Committee-Marketing Committee-Helmets and Pads Committee-Youth Programs Committee-Pro Committee-Accounting/Governess Committee-Benefits Committee-Membership Committee-Fundraising Committee-Media Committee-NGB Committee-Communications Committee and Partner Associations Committee. The board currently requests the participation of individuals to volunteer to an IASC action committee, either current or new, so that we can make shit happen. Contact John Bernards with your pledge of participation today…. Advisory Board of Directors – An A.B.D. can have a huge impact on furthering the effectiveness of IASC above beyond our immediate industry. The following are the first group to be recommended, Paul Schmitt from PST Sticks, Miki Vuckovich from Tony Hawk Foundation, Kevin Flanagan from ASR, Don Bostick from WCS, and Jim Fitzpatrick from UPSA, and Roy Turner from BRA. We are awaiting confirmation from said individuals and are still open to nominees for additional persons….. Committee Updates – ASR Marketing Plan – Part of the agreement that IASC has with ASR is that IASC produces a suggested marketing plan to ASR for each show. This plan consists of ideas and suggestions, if not straight out requests, to ASR that will improve and benefit the skateboard industries results from trade shows. This is for both the exhibitors and retailers alike. John Bernards and Marketing Committee heads, Don Brown and Per Welinder have been working on collecting ideas for the fall 2004 show as well as future shows (while the earth may have created in a day, Burnside was not! Have I used that line before?!?…). John presented a plan for fall 2004 and ideas were discussed (again) by all. The main criteria is to create compelling and economical reasons for retailers and distributors from around the world to attend the show. To make it a necessity and a pleasure to get our industry together and inspire excitement and action for the skateboard industry. Ideas at hand… Wider aisles, clever displays around the section, no carpet, relevant bands, stickers to give out to retailers who show, demo and autograph day, IASC bash for the skateboard industries, kids day, meaningful seminars, aggressive pre-marketing to stores through incentives and more… We hope ASR will respond positively, so that we can show retailers and new exhibiters that ASR is the most exciting action show available…. International Skateboarding Day – Don also, along with Per Welinder have been brainstorming the creation of an International Skateboarding Day. A day where skateboarders and enthusiasts alike take the day off to go out and relax with friends and family for a skate. Just imagine all of us worldwide all going out for a session at the same time. The grind heard round the world. Also a day to honor and celebrate our heritage and unique culture. This can eventually lead into large scale fund raising for special causes or charities. This is only the beginning and this years ‘International Skateboarding Day’ is set for June 21st, 2004, as it is the first day of summer…the season all skateboarders look forward to. However you want to celebrate it is all good. Just make sure you celebrate it…. Skatepark Development – Per Welinder reported on what is happening to work against the development of shitty, un-functional, hastily built and downright unsafe skateparks. Per, along with Paul Schmitt, Jim Gray, Tim Payne of Team Payne and Chad Ford of SPAUSA have been working on a document of ‘construction’ standards to submit to the ASTM which is a very large and powerful group that publishes standards on just about anything out there. Cities and contractors use ASTM standards more than anything to protect them from potential liabilities from building things that may put them in legal jeopardy. Mind you ‘construction’ standards are very different from what several very, very large play ground companies/all of a sudden suito skatepark builders are pushing to the ASTM, which is an, ‘design’ standardization. ‘Design’ standardization, if the ASTM accepts, would essentially mean skatepark ‘designs’ could potentially end the creative freedom to build interesting, challenging and progressive skateparks. This is against the basis drive of existence of skateboarding as we all have lived it and appreciate. Imagine that every skatepark in every town was exactly the same. Nightmare. This is a big one that all factions of skateboarding must rally against. ‘Construction’ standards merely lay out construction detail standards that make a great skatepark. Things like concrete PSI, radiuses of transitions, edge and lip configurations and so on. Let’s leave design to the skateboarders that know what makes a great skatepark. More forthcoming… Olympics?!? AKA NGB AKA USA Skateboarding – John Bernards and myself attended a second meeting of the newly formed USAS (United States of America Skateboarding). At this meeting it was agreed to create a board of directors comprised of IASC along with USPA, SPAUSA, WCS and key individuals such as, Tony Hawk, Dave Carnie, Buster Halterman, Chris Miller, Gary Ream, Miki Vuckovich, Andy Macdonald, Mark Waters, Neal Hendrix and more recently Bryce Kanights, Steve Douglas, Charlie Wilkens and Pete Townend (the list is still growing!). The non-profit USAS has formed to represent skateboarding and it’s best interests for the future growth and preservation of the skateboarding industries and culture. What does this have to do with the Olympics? Nothing at this point. Though should the IOC consider a position for skateboarding in the Olympics the USAS will be in place to direct and/or protest such an effort, in the best interests of skateboarding. Much hoopla, misinformation and rumors have floated around skateboarding’s presence in the Olympics for years. Whether or not skateboarding ever has a place in the Olympics, the formation of this non-profit entity can and will be instrumental in protecting and growing skateboarding into the future. I quote Pete Townend – long time surf magnate and father of Element professional skateboarder Tosh Townend, ‘The best interests of skateboarding must be in the hands of skateboarding’ in any and all developments. This ranges from the creation and supporting youth programs, protecting the rights of the core industry in the face of megacorp insurgence, to lobbying government agencies and if need be skateboarding’s role in the Olympics. The formation of the USAS is monumental. Never before in the history of skateboarding has a gathering of groups with this diversity with the common bond in the preservation and benefit of skateboarding culture and lifestyle come together. Just the presence of the groups and individuals noted above is significant. There must be something serious and beneficial happening if all these people are committing time to the USAS. IASC is proud and honored to have a voice within the USAS. More direct information beyond the IASC will quickly become available to all. Before you jump to conclusions or pass judgment, please make an effort to educate yourselves or better yet get your ass involved. Skateboarding’s secure future lies to our own responsibility. Any fault or failure to protect and preserve skateboarding will be by our own hands with lack of action or effort. Skateboarding, and skateboarders, not other organizations should be solely responsible for skateboarding’s future. That’s what USSA provides, skateboarders committed to developing and securing a skateboarder’s future for skateboarding…. Finance – IASC is making headway. 2004 will be a critical year to enact fundraising activities that push the machine forward. There are all kinds of ways to generate money outside of the actual skateboarding industry. We need to capitalize on those other avenues blah blah…. Open Discussion and New Topics – Johnny Shillereff suggested his participation in youth programs and has committed to the creation and development of an IASC Youth Programs Committee. Johnny has had great success with the development of the ‘Element Awareness’ youth programs and surely will be an asset to IASC’s developments in this area…. Jim Gray suggested reaching out to the smaller and niche companies of skateboarding and volunteered himself to assist in our Membership Committee to close the gaps in our loosely knit industry. We need all companies, big and small, participation to be effective. He also brought ‘made in origin’ benefits to point in which we agreed to further research and discussion and decision in our next meeting with his assistance… Per suggested a far-flung proposal, posing three questions to each of the 2004 USA presidential candidates. Let’s bring skateboarding to the forefront of political ignorance. We pay a shit load of taxes. Why not? Whether they answer or not it could bring some serious awareness to our cause…. Steve Van Doren welcomed free IASC member company banner placement and booths at Vans Triple Crown in Cleveland. Member companies should contact Steve for logistics. Steve and Vans have continually offered opportunities to member companies. Membership has privileges. Join IASC today. Contact Steve Van Doren tomorrow…. IASC and Don Brown requests interesting and rare items for donation to the IASC online auction. Contact Don to contribute…. To close, if I already have not done it enough, I want to impose your participation, members and non-members alike. It is wrong for you to just sit there and wait and expect results from IASC without your involvement. This is a two way street. IASC is the catalyst to get things moving to push skateboarding forward. Not to benefit just skateboard companies but all of skateboarding alike. But this cannot and will not happen unless you actively participate. Success depends on us all to put an effort in. From volunteering for action committees to member companies making sure they are responding to the response requests of IASC Board of Directors. Make a point to find out what is going on and what you can do to improve the situation. And that is… the situation. Keep on Rolling. For more go to www.skateboardiasc.org

SURFPARKS, LLC is attempting to construct a wave pool unlike any standing wave or pool that has been built. The first site of construction is set for Orlando Florida next to the Vans Skatepark and is due to open in the Winter 2005. The ‘phase-2’ location is set for Randall’s Island NY, just a few minutes outside NYC, and is due to open in 2006. Both ‘Surfparks’ are going to be much more than just a glorified wave pool. The plan is to create an actual ‘park,’ with 2 wave pools; one for advanced to expert, then a smaller one for beginner to intermediate. A ‘Flowrider’ standing wave, a commercial center with shops and restaurants, and even a stage to host concerts and events. The water in the pools will even be saltwater, and there will be in house pros for lessons and guidance. The bottom of the pool is a unique ‘Versareef’ system which is a bunch of wires connected to a computer that can alter the pool floor to emulate a variety of the best breaks in the world. So not only can you surf perfect waves indoors in warm water anytime of year, but you could surf Sebastian Inlet in the morning and Snapper Rocks in the afternoon without even leaving the building. Memberships range from ‘Platinum Anytime’ which is 2000 waves for $2,000, down to ‘Silver Off-Peak’ which is 500 waves for $625. They will be offering a sort of ‘day pass’ for anyone who walks in off the street. The day pass will run anywhere from $20 to $50 for a two hour session (that’s about15-20 waves) depending on which pool you want to surf. Check it out at www.surfparks.com

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: SAGE ISLAND’S ROY TURNER NAMED 7TH MOST INFLUENTIAL PERSON IN THE SURF INDUSTRY Wilmington, NC, April 22, 2004 – Transworld SURF Business Magazine (www.TransworldSURF.com) has named Roy Turner of Wilmington the 7th most influential person in the surf industry. Along with his role as Partner and head of Internet and Search Engine Marketing at Sage Island, Roy is also Founder and President of the Board Retailers Association (BRA, www.BoardRetailers.org), a non-profit trade association supporting specialty retailers in the surf, skate and snowboard industries. Known locally as a successful entrepreneur and the former owner/operator of Surf City Surf Shop for 25 years, Turner is now being recognized throughout the surf, skate and snowboard industries for the impact BRA is having and the power it affords to its members. It enables them to unify, compete with ‘big box’ mega-retailers and influence the direction of their industry. Joining Turner in the top 7 list are CEOs and executives of industry leading-companies like Quiksilver, Pacific Sunwear, Surftech, Volcom, Billabong and Becker Surfboards. BRA was born of Turner’s concern for future of the board sport industry and the effect giant retailers were having on smaller specialty shops. He saw an urgent need for these shops to organize and have a unified voice in communicating their issues to manufacturers, mega-retailers and the industry as a whole. Knowing the power of the web for communicating, marketing and organizing, Turner saw synergies between what it would take to get BRA off the ground and the technical capabilities of Sage Island. He enlisted the support of Sage Island’s CEO and fellow surfer, Mike Duncan, who built BRA’s extensive database and designed its website and communications tools. Duncan, Turner and the staff at Sage Island had previous experience in building database applications and websites for large associations, including the North Carolina State Bar Association and the North Carolina Association of CPAs. Duncan now serves as BRA’s Vice President. BRA and Sage Island have also collaborated in their charity efforts with Surf Aid International (SAI, www.SurfAidInternational.org), a non-profit organization of surfers and surf companies dedicated to improving health conditions in the Mentawi Islands, a famous surfing destination. Lack of access to medication in Mentawi results in enormous death and illness rates from easily preventable diseases like malaria, diarrhea and measles. Sage Island developed SAI’s association database applications and BRA recently held a fundraiser that raised over $27,000 for SAI – enough to buy over 18,000 vaccinations for the Mentawi people. That event was attended by surfing legend Bruce Brown, maker of the Endless Summer films, and renowned longboarder and Endless Summer star, Robert ‘Wingnut’ Weaver. Sage Island provides comprehensive web design and traditional marketing services to businesses of all types and sizes. Services include: web design and hosting; online marketing research and strategy; traditional print marketing; packaging design; interactive media and custom software applications. www.SageIsland.com. The Board Retailers Association acts as the primary voice and action group within the retail board sports industry. The Board Retailers Association organizes the concerns of Board Sport Retailers and expresses those views to Manufacturer Associations and Trade Show Organizations in an effort to promote our Industry and support the Independent Retailer. www.BoardRetailers.org.
