GRAVITY GAMES AMATEUR SKATEPARK SERIES – The Gravity Games, owned by Outdoor Life Network, announces the 2004 Gravity Games Amateur Skatepark Series, a nationwide series of more than 25 skateboard and bike competitions giving amateur athletes a chance to compete in the amateur finals at the 2004 Gravity Games. The events will begin in Orlando, FL on June 5 and run through August 20 in Cleveland, OH. In 2003, the Gravity Games Amateur Skatepark Series saw more than 1,800 amateur athletes compete over three months of events. ‘The Gravity Games events have widespread appeal and a passionate fan base,’ said Gavin Harvey, President of OLN. ‘By staging the amateur series around the country, we’re able to bring the Gravity Games to the local level, while giving potential stars in each of these communities the opportunity to compete on a much bigger stage.’ Local amateur winners earn a trip for themselves and a guest to the 2004 Gravity Games in Cleveland, September 15-19, to participate in the Amateur Skate and Bike Finals on Sunday, September 19. Local amateur winners will compete against one another on the Pro Street Course for top honors – the 2004 Gravity Games Amateur Skatepark Series crown. Amateur athletes interested in competing at local contests should visit www.gravitygames.com or contact the local skatepark for more information. The Gravity Games is entering its sixth year, and features more than 200 of the world’s best professional action sports athletes competing in various action sports disciplines. The event is expected to draw more than 200,000 spectators to Cleveland’s North Coast Harbor and also includes performances from some of today’s top bands. EXTREME SPORTS CHANNEL SEARCHES FOR REEF’S SURF ANGEL… Extreme Sports Channel and Reef have come together on the search for Miss Reef 2004. The international competition, which has run as an annual event since 1985, is famed for bringing bikini-clad beach babes to the fore in popular advertising campaigns and calendars and this year, it’s tuned into TV to find a surf angel. On-air promotions on Extreme begin this week with calls to bikini-loving girls to enter the competition. 60-second interstitials of the surf chicks will then be shown between programming in June for Extreme’s viewers to vote on via SMS or the web. The winner of the on-air competition will be flown to Newquay to meet nineteen other contenders for the Miss Reef 2004 title, which results in a year’s modeling contract and other benefits. A program covering the final event will then be shown in Extreme’s early autumn schedule. For further information go to www.extreme.com

OXNARD SKATEPARK Opening reaching fever pitch… The long-awaited skatepark, Oxnard’s newest recreational facility, will be celebrating its Grand Opening on Saturday, June 5 at 10:00 a.m. Located at College Park, 3250 Rose Avenue, the 14,500 sq. ft. skate park, offers bowls, grinding blocks, rails, power points, tombstones and pyramids to skateboarders and in-line skaters. This state of the art facility was designed by world-renowned architect/surfer/skateboarder Zach Wormhoudt who, through public workshops, received input from many local skateboarders and used it to develop a facility that would meet their needs. Built at a cost of $430,000, the park was funded by Certificate of Participation (C.O.P.) and Quimby interest. Oversight of the project was led by Dave Gorcey with the assistance of Larry Thompson and Doug Bungert. The contractor was Channel Islands Paving of Camarillo and California Skate Parks as the sub contractor. Oxnard’s Skatepark will be open from 10 a.m. to dusk during the daylight savings time of year and from 10 am to 5 pm during the rest of the year. Skaters interested in enjoying the skate park will be required to pre-register. Admission will be free. NEWS FROM CLAUS GRABKE – Here’s the first Shot of the new ‘TITUS SKATES Claus Grabke Model’. In 1980 TITUS SKATES became my very first board-sponsor and after more than 20 years and after Model-Boards on POWELL PERALTA, MADRID SKATEBOARDS, and SANTA CRUZ SKATEBOARDS I am now back on TITUS SKATES! I still skate, I never stopped, just quit my sponsors around 1993, because I just wanted to skate for myself and didn’t want to get caught up too much in the business side of the Skate-Industrie! Anyways, I was approached by a couple of Companies in the Meantime and finally decided to give in and bring out a Board again! The attached Photo was taken by Jim Gray, right after he personally made these decks at ABC…the purple deck is the 7,6 and the pink deck is the 8,25 version of the board! graphics by Jimbo Phillipps, son of Jim Phillipps, who did my original SANTA CRUZ graphics! I’m excited and just wanted to share the news with everyone! For anyone interested in what I do these days, please go to: www.alternative-allstars.de…

It’s been almost 7 months since Welsh went under the knife to repair a torn ACL, and although he’s still not ready for big spin fakie manuals at the pier, he’s already been spotted getting re-acquainted with his nollies. He’s as skate-minded as they come, so it won’t be long until he’s back at 100%. Cairo foster has been on a Popwar tour in Europe for almost three weeks now and there’s no indication that he will be home any time soon. Last we heard from him, he had just arrived in London after a week in southern France. Rumor has it that he is scheduled to return to the US at the beginning of July. SKATEBOARDING PHENOMENON TONY HAWK EXPLAINS THE GROWING APPEAL OF THE SPORT ON ’60 MINUTES,’ Charlie Rose explores the growing popularity of professional skateboarding with the sport’s most awe-inspiring trendsetter Tony Hawk on 60 MINUTES, Wednesday, June 16 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. A self-described outcast as a child growing up in San Diego, Hawk turned his skateboarding hobby into a profession at age 14. Now, 20 years later, having invented over 80 tricks and becoming the first to master the ‘900,’ two-and-a-half airborne revolutions on the board, Hawk has become the face of modern skateboarding. At age 34, he sports an image so squeaky clean that companies are lining up to do business with him. Activision’s video game ‘Tony Hawk, Pro Skater’ is one of the top-selling video games in the world and Hawk’s own line of skateboarding-inspired products has earned more than $20 million over the last two years alone. Inspired by his need for constant stimulation as a child, Hawk created the ultimate answer to attention deficit disorder. ‘Tony Hawk’s Boom Boom Huck Jam,’ an extreme sports spectacle packaged for arenas around the country, features the world’s best motocrossers, BMX bikers and skateboarders. ‘I was just doing a lot of exhibitions in recent years, seeing the crowds grow and grow and I felt like there was enough interest where we could be the focus of the tour.’ When asked to explain the extreme sport’s popularity, Hawk says, ‘I think the growing appeal is constant action, constant excitement.’ Comparing a skateboarding competition to an auto race, Hawk says, ‘I think the fans like the perceived risk factor. You know, whether anyone wants to admit it or not, they like to see us take spills.’ For details go to www.cbsnews.com/stories/1999/05/24/60II/main48284.shtml

ISA NEWS – SURFING NEWS – ON THE OLYMPIC FRONT Information for WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) WADA has requested that each ISA NGB know what travel plans its athletes have for the month of July because WADA will be conducting out of competition testing. This is mostly for Sports included on the official Programme, but since surfing is a recognized sport, the ISA, and all of its NGBs come under this umbrella of WADA and therefore; out of competition testing. WADA wants to know the exact addresses and exactly where the NGB athletes (those that participated in the last WSG in Ecuador), will be in the month of July 2004. As part of the WADA code that the ISA has signed, out of competition testing is a part of the code and can be conducted at any given time. The ISA kindly requests each NGB to submit information and contacts to the ISA for each competitor from the WSG 2004 in Ecuador. For the NGBs that did not participate in the WSG 2004, please send a list of athletes from the last WSG that your national team participated in, along with their addresses and travel plans for the month of July 2004. For those NGBs who have never participated, please send the ISA a list from your last national series. The ISA would really appreciate this information by no later than Thursday, June 10th to be able to send it in. Please send it to Maile Aguerre at the following email: maile@isasurf.org

HAWAII – Surfing becomes an official High School sport in Hawaii – Excerpt from CNN.com, posted Friday, May 21, 2004 – Riding the waves was made an official high school sport on Thursday, May 20th by the State Board of Education. The decision on whether to have a surfing team will be up to each school. Before voting 9 – 0, board members heard about one hour of testimony mostly in favor of sanctioning the sport. Despite its history as the birthplace of surfing, Hawaii had never allowed recognized interscholastic high school surfing teams because of concerns over safety, costs and liability. Public School students now compete in surf meets as members of clubs, but they can’t use their schools’ names. The new policy will allow surf clubs to be official school teams. RED BULL BIG WAVE AFRICA 2004 – Surfing South Africa (SSA) Specialty event. June 7 – 27, Dungeons, Hout Bay, Cape Town – The challenge to surf the biggest ride-able waves on the coastline of Africa is based in Hout Bay on the Cape Peninsula and the competitors, along with the three alternates, wait for swells exceeding five metres in height at Dungeons, the open ocean reef under the towering cliffs of the Sentinel Mountain, during the 21 day holding period. The life threatening nature of big wave surfing has led to the contest itself only being staged twice since it was initiated in 1999 – in near perfect 15 – 18 foot (5 – 6 metre) swells in 2000 when Holmes clinched victory and in similar size but incredibly hollow waves last year when Long dominated proceedings – ironically both occasions held on the day after the holding period ended! However, the invitees challenge Dungeons every time it breaks and several wind-blown sessions that were unsuitable for the contest have produced rides on swells in the 20 foot plus (7-8 metres) range, creating wave faces the height of a four story building. A prize-pool totaling R125 000 is at stake, while the streamlined contest format geared to completing the contest in under four hours enables contest director Gary Linden (California) and his newly appointed assistant, local big wave surfing legend Jonathan Paarman from Hout Bay, to thoroughly check the conditions before giving the contest the go-ahead. The all important safety aspects of Red Bull BWA will again be coordinated by California based water safety expert Shawn Alladio and her Brazilian partner Marcelo Ulyssea on PWC’s. Dr Duncan Laurenson, himself a surfer, and a pair of paramedics with state-of-the-art life-support systems are in the line-up at Dungeons on every day the break is surfed, backed up by an interim trauma unit and ambulance available at the event HQ. Red Bull Big Wave Africa 2004 Competitors include Grant Baker (Durban), Carlos Burle (Brazil), Mickey Duffus (Cape Town), Sean Holmes (Wilderness), Greg Long (California), Andrew Marr (Cape Town), Coco Nogales (Mexico), Jason Ribbink (Durban), Jamie Sterling (Hawaii), Justin Strong (Cape Town), Darryl ‘Flea’ Virostko (California), Grant Washburn (California). Alternates – International: Doug Young (New Zealand)… South African: David Smith (Cape Town), Richie Sills (Durban) Information on the status of the event: www.rebullbwa.com

RED BULL NEWS – The Red Bull Vert Sessions returns for its second annual tour of the UK, visiting Bristol, Birmingham, Leeds and Brighton between May and September. The tour will feature some of the UK’s premier vert kings including Ali Cairns and Dave Allen. The Vert Sessions is a combined series of demos and workshops, held in the best skate parks around the UK, open to any level of skater under the age of 20. Each visit will consist of a two-day session hosted by the pros themselves. A clinic on day one will teach riders everything they need to know about the discipline, whilst day two will see four pros performing their best and brightest tricks and going out to the crowds on the massive Red Bull 15-metre King-size II Vert Ramp in the city centres. We all know that as of late that vert has been pushed to the side by street skating basically due to the time, patience and difficulty the discipline requires. However, as part of its continued commitment to the scene, Red Bull is hosting this tour to enable riders to get to grips with the basics, feel confident about their riding and discover that je ne sais quios and essence of how rewarding sessioning vert can be. As well as offering a platform for those who have never ridden vert before, it will also provide the chance for those to take their riding that all important next step. Last year, over a hundred riders between the ages of 8 and 18 took part in the Sessions. Some had never even stood at the top of a ramp before, never mind attempt to drop in. However, with encouragement, advice and geeing from the pros, little dudes were mastering their first ever grab on every single leg along the tour! Ali Cairns reckons, ‘It’s great to be back for another year, the whole event is really rewarding, especially when you see a kid drop in their first time. One minute they’re shaking at the top of the ramp, the next they’re riding it! But more than anything, it’s rewarding to know that we’re really helping to shape the future of the British vert scene and hope we can recruit even more riders this time round’. The Vert Sessions will visit the following locations: 25th -26th August – Birmingham (Centenary Square); 1st -2nd September – Leeds (Millennium Square); 4th -5th September – Brighton (Beach outside Zap Club). P.S. There could be a few legendary ‘mystery’ pro’s turning up from stop to stop, so don’t say you haven’t been warned!

BRICK AND MORTAR, DOCUMENTS NYC STREET CULTURE – New York, NY (May 20, 2004): NYC skateboarding fixtures Steve Rodriguez and Jay Maldonado are proud to announce the release of Brick and Mortar – a mix-tape style DVD that provides a candid, inside look at the Big Apple’s unique street culture melting pot. Slated to hit shelves in early June 2004 and backed by Mountain Dew, Brick and Mortar will be distributed free of charge at select retailers throughout New York’s metropolitan area. ‘This project isn’t about making a profit,’ says noted videographer and Lower East Side resident, Jay Maldonado. ‘It’s about celebrating the many different cultures, lifestyles and mind-sets that have shaped New York into such an incredible city.’ To help ensure the 30-minute DVD retained a gritty edge and accurately captured the sights, sounds and experiences that truly define NYC street culture, Rodriguez and Maldonado collected footage from an array of NYC-based independent filmers. Submissions included everything from skateboarding, graffiti and hip-hop, to b-boys and blow out parties. After countless hours of sifting and editing, an authentic snap-shot of everyday city life was born – Brick and Mortar. ‘I was initially hesitant to enlist corporate support for an underground project of this nature,’ comments 5boro Skateboards Founder and Owner Steve Rodriguez, ‘but Mountain Dew gave us complete creative control which was great because Jay and I were able to make something that really supports and represents many aspects of the New York scene. Brick and Mortar was a huge undertaking and I’m really happy with the final product.’ On the skateboarding front, Brick and Mortar features the talents of Pat Smith, Quim Cardona, Dan Pensyl, Andy Bautista and many more NYC locals, including an extended segment with Billy Rohan. It takes you where few skateboarders have gone before – to a session at Brooklyn’s indoor, privately owned-and-operated Autumn Bowl. Organized and run as a co-op, only a handful of key holders and their friends usually skate this oasis. Plus, Brick and Mortar takes a first-hand look at the family-like environment cultivated within the walls of KCDC Skateshop in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Featuring a special intro by Earsnot – the creative force behind one of Manhattan’s more prevalent tags – Brick and Mortar also examines NYC’s music and art scenes including Tuff City Styles which runs a tattoo shop, record label and entertainment company. Sample fresh beats from the Flame Torches and check out elaborate tattoos and graffiti from urban art pioneers Cesone and Med. Finally, catch a special guest appearance by NYC’s elusive graffiti legend, Espo. A DVD release party is scheduled for Saturday, June 5th from 8pm-2am at Brooklyn’s Autumn Bowl located at 73 West Street between Milton and Noble. The party is open to the public and will feature a Brick and Mortar video premier, live graffiti exhibition, skate contest, DJ’s and more. In addition to Mountain Dew, Brick and Mortar was made possible with generous support from 5boro Skateboards, Etnies, Defex Clothing, KCDC Skateshop, ABC Skateshop, Autumn Skateshop, and web portals 5050skateboarding.com and OfficialNewYork.com. Keep an eye out for Brick and Mortar: Volume 2, scheduled to drop Fall 2004. Find out more at www.brickandmortar.tv.
