JANUARY 2007 NEWS

INKWELL NEWS – Inkwell Surf was built on inspiration from the Inkwell Beach in Santa Monica, CA. In the 1920’s and 1930’s, Inkwell Beach was 200ft of roped off sand for ‘Negroes Only’. Inkwell beach was also known as home to the first documented surfer of African and Hispanic descent, Nicolas Gabaldon. Nick was known for introducing Aggie Quigg, Joe Quigg’s wife, (Joe Quiggs had a major surfboard company)) to riding tandem. Some of Nick’s closest friends were Les Williams, Buzzy Trent, Ricky Grigg, Mickey Munoz, Bob Hogan and a few others that surfed in Malibu. In 1951 Nick and Bob Hogan surfed one of the biggest swells of that time, and while Bob called out to Nick to ‘pull out’ Nick unfortunately did not and he ended up passing away when he hit the pier. Nick was found 3 days later by his surfing buddies and is now at peace in the Santa Monica Cemetery. On February 14th 2006 Inkwell Surf went down to Santa Monica City Hall where we asked the council in consideration of Black History Month, to consider placing a plaque at Inkwell Beach memorializing the location and Nicolas Gabaldon. Santa Monica approved the request . Because of this phenomenal story and history, Rhonda Harper began a surf and skate club which allowed disadvantaged and inner city kids the opportunity to get transported to the beach for free surf lessons, the history of the beaches, and where surfing began, and free tutoring for those that needed help with school. In order to be an active member in our club you must receive a c average or better. After trying to find donations, supplies and funds for our events and projects, it became difficult to gain sponsors, so Rhonda Harper started Inkwell Surf’s lifestyle brand to help fund the surf and skate club. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – STEVE-O SLAMS RINGLING BROS. IN EXCLUSIVE PETA2 RANT AGAINST CIRCUS – Jackass star and red-carpet stunt impresario Stephen Glover, a.k.a. Steve-O, might be best known for his penchant for self-inflicted pain, but if you so much as mention how animals suffer at the hands of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus, Steve-O goes off like a cannon. Just ask the folks at peta2-the world’s largest youth animal rights organization-whom Steve-O invited to his house to videotape his thoughts about circuses in an aptly dubbed session called ‘Steve-O’s Rant Against Ringling.’ ‘The Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus has been abusing animals since the 1800s, and I’m sick of it. What a bunch of dicks!’ says Glover, who performs a few Steve-O specialties in the video-like balancing a knife on his nose and walking down a staircase on his hands. The rant can be seen at http://www.peta2.com/OUTTHERE/o-steve_o.asp?c=p22173. Why does Steve-O wish that Ringling would fold up its tents for good? After graduating from Ringling’s Clown College several years ago, Steve-O performed in another circus, where he saw firsthand how trainers routinely strike elephants with steel-tipped bullhooks in order to instill fear and obedience in the animals. ‘You read about a lot of elephants going berserk in the circus, and it’s obvious why they go berserk. It’s because they’re fricking tortured every day. I saw it myself,’ he says. Why does Ringling Bros. get Steve-O especially ticked? Tigers live in cages so small that they can barely turn around, elephants live the majority of their lives in chains and are beaten with bullhooks in order to force them to perform, and baby elephants are separated from their mothers long before they would naturally leave their families. Steve-O joins an ever-growing list of athletes, musicians, and other celebrities-including Rise Against, Alkaline Trio, Peaches, Rick Thorne, Ed Templeton, and Fall Out Boy-who have teamed up with peta2 to inspire kids to challenge outdated, cruel attitudes about animals. For more information and to view Steve-O’s ‘rant,’ please visit peta2.com.

FLOGGING MOLLY NEWS – Matt Hensley, accordion/concertina player has left Flogging Molly. While this has been rumoured for some time, official confirmation from the band came in today. Matt leaves the band on good terms and had this to say: ‘First let me say that it has been an honor to play with Flogging Molly for the last 10 years. I would have never thought that playing the accordion, an instrument that almost got me shot when I first was learning, would have led me down a road to Molly Malone’s, Dave King, and an extended family called Flogging Molly. I have been blessed to be so lucky. I am writing this to tell you that I am leaving the band. This decision was not easy for me. I have an eight year old son Oliver who is becoming a little man, and the feeling that he needs his old man around is becoming too strong for me to ignore. The older my son gets the harder it is for me to leave him behind to go out on tour. Flogging Molly, as you know, is a hard working band that tours most of the year; I would never try to change that. I must follow my guts and step down. I’m departing the band but I will never leave what Flogging Molly has meant to the fans and myself. I look forward to playing on some songs when the band is in San Diego.’ Speaing of touring, Flogging Molly is hitting the road for a month-long tour beginning February 22nd.

BUILT TO EXPOSE – The Built to Expose Art exhibition from Amsterdam is coming to Berlin. January 26-28. It is going to be an eye catcher at the Spirit of Fashion tradeshow during the Berlin Fashion week. The Strychnin gallery (Berlin, New York) was asked by the organization if they could organize an art show at the Spirit of Fashion and Yasha Schulz-Young, owner of the gallery, thought that the Built to Expose art exhibition would be perfect for such an event. Built to Expose is an exhibition of over 70 skateboards that have been turned into great pieces of art by over 60 artists from the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, US and Australia; painters, tattoo-artists, illustrators, graphic designers, skateboarders, graffiti artists, muscicians, etc, etc. Over 70 very different pieces of art that all started out from one shape, the shape of a skateboard. For Berlin there will be new pieces added to the exhibition. Several artists from Berlin (Chris Koch, Sara Rosenbaum, Chrissi Julich aka NABF and Julia Surba), well known artist Jason Jacenko from Autralia and Liorcifer from Last Rites tattoos in New York. Thanks to Built to Destroy skateboards and Eastpak Benelux(Built to Resist) this exhibition has already been in several locations in Amsterdam (Art Beat, de Cantine, de Jam), Huizen (het Huizer museum) and Antwerp (club Petrol, Fish ‘n Chips). At all these places in the Netherlands and Belgium the show had a lot of response from the public and press. For more info: www.myspace.com/builttoexpose

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: The Board Show SAVE A SKATEPARK Benefit Art Show – The Board Show was established in February 2005 to bring a fresh perspective on the connection between creativity and skateboarding. The Board show will benefit DIY skateparks and public parks in need of funds and or representation. As of Sept 5th, the Ripon City Council is trying to take the park for no reason at all. In Oakland, Boardertown will have to obtain $2.5 million in liability insurance and apply for building permits to complete the park before it can reopen to the public. We need these parks for our youth and ourselves. The point of the Boardshow is to take something they already have and put a creative spin on its purpose. The plan is to develop an ongoing art show that shows the unlimited possibilities of the skateboard as a canvas, while distributing funds to various skateparks in need. Various skaters and artists have agreed to design skateboards. The boards will be displayed in 3 cities in 3 months. The show will continue online where they will be auctioned off with all proceeds to benefit California’s public skateparks. This will continue every year. SURFRIDER FOUNDATION NEWS – The Montauk Point Lighthouse, located in Long Island, is in
danger of being destroyed should a major storm hit it while it is situated in its precarious location. While the Army Corps of Engineers has a plan to reinforce it with giant boulders, which would create a wall that is 840-feet long and 40-feet thick, their plan is short sighted and doesn’t really solve the coastal erosion problem facing the lighthouse. Instead, Surfrider Foundation has proposed an alternative plan to move the lighthouse 800 feet away to higher ground – a plan that makes more sense but may initially cost almost twice as much. Needless to say, efforts are being met with some opposition. Read

FLORIDA BOARD BUILD-OFF – The Board Retailers Association and Reef have partnered to sponsor the 2007 Florida Board Build-Off. A dozen elite Florida shapers, plus an honorary ’13th Shaper’ have been hand picked and commissioned to create one of a kind surf boards. The thirteen boards will be on display January 11th-13th during the Surf Expo tradeshow, and all will be up for silent auction. All proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Board Retailers Association and used to design and implement a nationally accredited retailer education program. The shaper whose board raises the most money in each auction will receive $2,000 from Reef, as the ‘winner’ of the Board Build-Off. ‘Board builders are the foundation of our industry, and we wanted to provide a platform that would spotlight what true craftsman and creative thinkers they all are’, said Bob Tanner, Reef’s Strategic Marketing Manager and Board Build-Off organizer. ‘We are really appreciative of REEF for partnering with us on the 2007 Florida Board Build-Off and to all of the shapers who are donating their time and resources to raise money for retail education. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – OPENING CEREMONY KICKS OFF THE 2007 MAVERICKS SURF CONTEST PRESENTED BY ASK.COM – On Saturday, January 6, The 2007 Mavericks Surf Contest waiting period was officially launched with a ceremonial paddle-out and prayer circle at the famed Mavericks surf break followed by a celebration. Greeted by sunny skies, Contest Director and surf legend, Jeff Clark welcomed the surfers and spectators, reminding the crowd of the great bond and respect competitors have for one another in the water. Surfer and Mavericks ambassador Grant Washburn spoke, echoing this sentiment, and prompted the Contest invitees, some family members, head judge Gary Linden, and a few alternates to paddle-out together and join hands in a prayer circle to ask for a safe and successful upcoming event. The celebration then moved to the Harbor House Convention Center where competitors were greeted with a charming party which included locally designed eucalyptus leis and conch shell awards presented to past Contest winners. After dinner, the impressive $75,000 prize purse was announced and the highly anticipated draw for the heat selections was conducted by master of ceremonies Jeff Clark. Unlike other big wave events where the heat selection is pre-seeded, The Mavericks Surf Contest allows the athletes to draw numbered golf balls which determine who they will surf against in the first round. This process, requested by the surfers, reflects their feelings about the Mavericks wave itself; you never know what you’ll get. Prize Purse… The Contest prize purse for 2007 is worth a total of $75,000. The purse breakdown awards $30,000 for first place, $12,000 for second place, $7,500 for third place, $3,500 for fourth place, $2,500 for fifth place, $1,500 for sixth place and $1,000 for seventh through 24th place.

SAVE TRESTLES – By now many of you may have heard or read about the Surfrider Foundation’s campaign to save Trestles. Surfrider Foundation. Located on the border of Orange and San Diego counties, the breaks at Trestles, including Uppers, Lowers, Cotton’s, Middles, and Church, are California surfing at its best. The world-class peaks are accessible by footpaths that wind along Southern California’s last unspoiled coastal creek. The Orange County Transportation Corridor Agency is now seeking to build a multi-lane toll highway down this unique and special watershed, and directly through the heart of San Onofre State Beach Park. If constructed as planned, this toll road project will result in profound devastation to our State Park resources, surf break and the sensitive environment along the San Mateo Creek watershed, including:

* Permanent closure of 60% of San Onofre State Beach Park Area
* Abandonment of San Onofre State Beach Park’s 161 site San Mateo Creek Campground
* Destruction of habitat critical to 11 federally designated endangered or threatened species, including the Southern Steelhead Trout
* Irreparable damage to seven archaeological sites, including one Native American site
* Degradation to the water quality throughout San Mateo Creek, as well as the coastal areas along Trestles and San Onofre State Beach
* Possible significant impacts to the quality of the surf breaks at Trestles

This is one of the very last natural coastal areas available to the public in southern California, and needs to be protected at all costs! Save Trestles To win this vital campaign to Save Trestles, we need your help. With mounting legal costs as well as the need to further fund our grassroots efforts, your support is imperative. You can help save it. Questions, comments or concerns? Email us at membership@surfrider.org or call us toll-free at 1-800-743-SURF.

SURFRIDER NEWS – Global Warming Threatens Ocean Stability – While the damaging effects of global warming on our oceans’ temperatures have long been on the radar, there is new evidence to support this claim. By studying images taken by NASA’s SeaWiFS satellite over the last ten years, researchers have now concluded that an increase in temperature could severely harm phytoplankton and endanger our oceans’ biologic production.
