JANUARY 2004 NEWS

SANTA MONICA SKATEPARK NEWS from www.surfsantamonica.com – Skate Park on the Fence – After clearing all the hurdles in its path, Memorial Park’s long-awaited 24,000-square-foot skate park hit a kink Monday night at the Architectural Review Board, which remained on the fence over its chain-link enclosure. Mostly content with the rolling concrete and metal layout, board members worried that the proposed fence made the park feel like a ‘prison’ and obstructed the view of spectators. They voted to send the project — which has been nine years in the making — back for revision. The proposed eight-foot-high fence encircling the street-concrete playground, which includes 8,500-cubic inches of curvaceous, multiple-pool ‘vert’ (skate slang for vertical), posed both aesthetic and safety concerns. Board member Iris Oliveras wondered: ‘Won’t kids impale themselves’ on the fence’s exposed spiked top? Another board member worried that the fence’s height would fail to guard unsuspecting children playing nearby from flying skateboards. ‘I certainly hope not,’ Brett Horner, senior analyst for the City’s community and cultural services, said of both scenarios. ‘Unless the skateboard can do it on its own,’ Horner said, an eight-foor fence should do the trick. Comparing it to a skate park he saw in Boulder, Colorado, board member Rodolfo Alvarez said he was generally ‘disappointed’ with the project and saw the fence as a shortcoming. ‘It’s like going to a theatre and having so many columns in front of you that you can’t see the performance,’ said Alvarez. Compared to the more ‘sophisticated’ and ‘advanced’ Boulder park, where ‘they really integrated the fan, the observers, the mother, the father, and other skaters into the skater area — here it seems you’re blocking them out.’ The fence is just one reason the design fails to ascend to a ‘national grandeur’ compatible with his vision of Santa Monica, Alvarez said. With its ‘disappointing’ size and scope, the park will fail to be a magnet for tourists and national and international skateboarding competitions that would pump money in the local economy and put another jewel on the City’s crown. ‘If you were going to have a competition, which would bring money into the city, you would have it in Boulder, not in Santa Monica,’ Alvarez said. ‘Precisely because Santa Monica is where it all started, I am disappointed,’ Alvarez said, referring to the Dogtown skate team revered as the founding fathers of modern skateboarding, having perfected the craft on the streets and in the empty pools of Santa Monica and Venice Beach 30 years ago. However, the designers of the park maintained that while the project was limited by space and money – a much larger space at the beach was shot down – it stays true to the legacy left behind by the living legends and boasts all the features needed for professional competitions. The park, designers said, sports especially designed ‘ShotCrete’ concrete surfaces that are as ‘smooth as butter’ paving three separate and adjoining pools or ‘combi-bowls’ varying in depth from 4 to 11 feet. The pools are encircled by galvanized metal coping on the lips, connecting to metal and concrete handrails, stairs and other street elements. ‘It’ll meet the needs of the old-school and new-school skaters,’ said John Little, who is on the California Skateparks design team. Some board members disagreed with Alvarez’s criticisms. Oliveras pointed out that the park was ‘designed on a small scale’ and was never meant to aspire to national grandeur. While the park is not dug as deep into the ground as the one at Boulder, where observers can safely peer down at the spectacle, it provides a direct eye-level ‘3-D perspective’ of the acrobatic goings on, Oliveras said. Board member Joan Charles agreed. ‘This is an amenity for our citizens. We don’t always have to make things for others (non-locals) to use, we barely have our own things as it is.’ For additional local news visit www.surfsantamonica.com.

SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL NEWS – 2004 Sundance Film Festival- Jan 15 -25, 2004 – Park City, Utah – Opening Night Screening of ‘Riding Giants’ – Director: Stacy Peralta, Screenwriters – Stacy Peralta, Sam George, Executive Producers – Nathalie Delest, Franck Marty, Laird Hamilton, Producers – Agi Orsi, Stacy Peralta, Jane Kachmer, Cinematographer – Peter Pilafian, Editor – Paul Crowder, Narrator – Sean Penn, Cast – Laird Hamilton, Greg Noll, Jeff Clark – ‘Riding Giants’, Stacy Peralta’s surfing sequel to his Sundance debut and award winner, Dogtown and Z-Boys, is a semiserious, often rollicking, multigenerational insider’s look at the origins of surfing, the colorful and subversive birth of surf culture, and the mythology and lure of the ‘big wave.’ This passionate and fluid film is without question the first authentic history of surfing from its humble Hawaiian beginnings to the big business it became to the still-rebellious universe it inhabits today. ‘Riding Giants’ is a study in individuality and freedom, the pursuit and techniques of pure kinetic pleasure, and the risk taking and attitudes that characterize its leading figures. For some viewers, this is perhaps more than they ever wanted to know. But Peralta’s detailed knowledge of the surfing lifestyle, its icons and locations, its boom and exploitation by the media, and the fascination it has held for young men for more than five decades is unparalleled and fuels this expedition for the expert and initiate alike. Closely chronicling the sometimes-life-and-death drama that big-wave riding entails, ‘Riding Giants’ is an often-mesmerizing visual thrill ride. But the most appealing aspect of this often revelatory documentary is the realization that the man versus nature dialectic never ends; the search for the ultimate wave and the spiritual pinnacle can only be pursued but never reached. Screening Times – Thursday, Jan 15 6:30 PM Eccles Center. For more listings go to http://festival.sundance.org

FIRST METAL PIPE LOOP – Bob Burnquist Makes Skateboarding History – Carlsbad CA, Dec 10th- Legendary skater Bob Burnquist continues to set the bar for the skateboarding world. Making skateboarding history, Burnquist looped his infamous backyard twelve-foot steel full pipe Nov 23rd, 2003 at 4:20pm. Although a handful of opportunists have been able to complete track-style loops-generating speed from a starting ramp-until this point, no one had ever successfully looped a ‘natural’ full pipe. Having tried and failed the maneuver once before, ending up with a broken foot and sprained ankle after his efforts at the Baldy pipe on Dec 14, 2002, Burnquist was determined to overcome this elusive challenge. Featured on the cover of the April 2003 issue of TransWorld Skateboarding magazine inside the pipe at Mt. Baldy, Burnquist took the front-and-center coverage of his near miss as a personal challenge to make the full-pipe loop a reality. His recent attempt at the pipe was the result of nearly a year of mental preparation…. Although there are nearly a dozen skaters in the world who can currently complete a track-style loop, to date, looping a full pipe has been an unobtainable feat. To navigate his way around a ‘natural’ full pipe a skater must first generate speed by gyrating back and forth within the pipe. As Burnquist sees it, ‘it’s like doing a loop and a half, really. By the time you decide (to commit) and put your wheels down on the frontside kickturn, it’s over. You’ve got to think so quick.’ A born-and-bred Brazilian, Burnquist is known as one of the most progressive skateboarders in the world. With a long list of contest wins including nearly every present-day event, and a style driven by pure innovation and originality, Burnquist is admired by skaters and fans of skateboarding alike.

This past year, the Surfrider Foundation, through its grassroots efforts, achieved substantial victories involving beach access in Texas; water quality in Oregon; water pollution reduction in Orange County, California; wave access in New Jersey; and rejection of harmful development projects on the Gaviota Coast in California and the Rincon coast in Puerto Rico. We introduced our Respect the Beach program to 1,500 students across the United States. This program recently was awarded the 2003 California Governor’s Award for Environmental Leadership in Children’s Environmental Education. The Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Awards are California’s highest and most prestigious environmental honor recognizing individuals, organizations, and businesses that have demonstrated exceptional leadership in building public-private partnerships while making notable contributions in conserving California’s environment. Our ocean, waves and beaches are under siege. Consider these few facts: 2.8 billion gallons of industrial waste will be discharged into the world’s oceans in the next 24 hours. 329 million gallons of untreated sewage will be discharged off our nation’s coasts in the next 24 hours. In 2002, there were more than 12,000 beach closings and advisories due to water pollution–the second highest number of beach closures and advisories in thirteen years. Our oceans need your support! By signing up today to become a Surfrider Foundation Member on or before December 31st, 2003, your year-end membership gift will be tax deductible for 2003. 86 cents of every dollar of your membership donation goes directly to our beaches.
