Florida Bowlriders Cup 2015

Kona Florida Bowlriders Cup 2015 was on fire for the ninth year at the Kona Skatepark, Jacksonville, FL, April 17-19, 2015. Don’t miss next year’s event as Kona will be celebrating ten years of the Florida Bowlriders Cup contests. Congrats to Marty Ramos and the Kona crew for another incredible event. Thanks to Lee Leal from Embassy Skateboards for the photos and thanks to Connor Kelley, Gio Fournier and Dave Headson for the video clips, and thanks to Steve Olson, Lenny Byrd, Dave Hackett, Allen Midgette and Marty Ramos for the good words…

Steve Olson...

“When I saw the kids ripping the bowl at Kona, one thing kept coming to mind… We can learn from these kids. All these older guys were watching kids from all over tearing this bowl. Some from Florida, Texas, California…  All I can remember is that they weren’t concerned so much where they were from, just that they were killing this bowl together. Point being, it doesn’t matter where you’re from, (the lesson) just as long as you’re having a good time. Get it? Good…”  – STEVE OLSON

Lenny Byrd...

“I have been involved with the Florida Bowlriders contest for years now at some level or another, from contestant to judge. It is an awesome event that brings skaters young and old from all over the country for a weekend of good times. It’s different from other events because it has a real family friendly environment, but still has enough of an edge that even the most hardcore skaters appreciate. This year’s event was incredible due to having three different unique events in one, the Bowlriders contest itself, the 2015 Florida Skater Hall of Fame induction ceremony and the book signing of The Secret History of the Ollie. All three events brought a wide array of skaters from legends of our sport to super young up-and-comers. One of the best parts is just getting all these different levels and styles of skating together at a place like Kona where everyone is bombing the snake, going crazy on the tombstone, killing the vert ramp… It’s just like being at skate Mecca and everything is a go. It was killer to see Lee Leal and his Embassy contingency, and I was stoked to skate with my old friend Mike Dailey who was inducted into the HOF. Always stoked to be around my Florida skate family. I have to say one of my favorite skaters to watch at the Bowlriders is Nick Wallace who we have watched grow up around Bowlriders and is always dominating. Colin Graham is another guy that is killer to watch. I pretty much just get stoked up on the whole damn thing. Looking forward to next year.” – LENNY BYRD

Allen Midgette...

It was really great seeing people that I haven’t seen in years! Best live skateboarding I have seen in a long time. The KIDS killed it. Thank you Kona Skate Park, and Marty Ramos for a super fun time!!! – ALLEN MIDGETTE

Dave Hackett...

“Kevin Kowalski, Chris Russell and Colin Graham were super gnarly and slayed it the hardest.” – DAVID HACKETT

Martin Ramos...

“The best ever!” It’s humbling to keep hearing that year after year, but that’s what Florida Bowlriders Cup keeps producing or better said… that’s what skateboarding keeps producing. It’s no mystery that the Bowlriders Cup is the gnarliest, scariest and most exciting event anyone could participate in or witness. It seems like it has become a right of passage for today’s all-terrain rippers. Obviously, it isn’t the prize money that keeps ’em coming back. To have Chris Russell and Kevin Kowalski come all the way from the West Coast and battle skaters from Texas, Florida and beyond, simply makes for one of the best weekends anyone could hope to experience. Make no mistake, it is a battle. From surviving the campground antics to making it through qualifying, there is so much to do, to skate, and to experience, and anyone making it to the finals should consider themselves a winner. To survive the open jam format might just be the pinnacle of many skater’s competitive careers. Congrats to Chris Russell whom, over the years, worked his way through the Bowlriders Cup amateur ranks to win the Pro division. Thanks to Kevin Kowalski, Dalton Dern and the entire Bacon / Lifeblood crew for representing year after year. Thanks to Lee Leal and the Embassy crew for making the trip, and to Jimmy “the Greek” Marcus for not missing one Bowlriders Cup event, ever! Thanks to 2014 Amateur Champion, Colin Graham, who made the podium in his first year in the Pro Division. I gotta give it up to Vans, Powell Peralta and Bones who kicked down to keep the contest alive and a whole host of local support that makes this event feel like family. It’s always amazing to see so many people come and hang out all weekend, all in the name of fun, and all in the name of skateboarding. The contest isn’t the reason people show up; it’s the excuse. See ya next year for the 10 year anniversary of Florida Bowlriders Cup. – MARTIN RAMOS – KONA SKATEPARK

Read here what Dan from Juice Magazine had to say:

“In what has become one of the premiere Bowl Riding Contests the East Coast has to offer, this year’s Florida BowlRiders Cup raised the bar with skaters from all over the country flying in and  jamming it out for the glory of winning. The heats were stacked and it was an onslaught of 540′s, inverts and crushing grinds that pushed every competitor to new levels.
Masters winner, Jimmy “The Greek” Marcus, kept things fun and creative, while simultaneously cheating death with his insane stacked skateboards drop in. (Check the video.) Dalton Dern mixed it up with crazy lip tricks and unusual lines landing him in first place of the Pro Division. Julz Lynn has been on fire this year and her solid grinds and big airs have made her tough to beat as she took the top spot of the Women’s Division. Martin Ramos, owner of Kona Skatepark and creator of the Bowlriders competition, has created an atmosphere that brings multiple generations of skaters to compete and support each other.
Props to all who showed up and competed.”
