Local Skateboarders Celebrating the etnies Skatepark of Lake Forest Expansion with Lake Forest Mayor Peter Herzog and etnies Owner/CEO Pierre-Andre Senizergues. The etnies Skatepark of Lake Forest was a first in skateboarding – In 2003 it was the first time a skatepark was created through a public/private partnership. etnies partnered with The City of Lake Forest to create this skatepark that currently has more than 1,200 skateboarders ride it each week. Eight years later, the skatepark continues to be such a benefit to the city that they are expanding it. The etnies Skatepark of Lake Forest model shows that skateparks can be a major benefit to communities all over the world. “It’s incredible to see that the same year etnies is celebrating our 25th birthday, the skatepark is getting bigger too!” said Pierre-Andre Senizergues, owner and CEO of etnies. “It’s an example of what a success it has been for the city and for skateboarders in our community. A tribute to the future! Bravo, Lake Forest!” The expansion concept created by skateboarder and community input, Nick Gates and the City of Lake Forest staff, and SITE Design Group, Inc., is scheduled to be completed by California Skateparks in mid-July 2011. The expansion area will include the following features:

It’s a cool evening in Los Angeles and another unsigned band has arrived to the Sunset Strip of Hollywood in search of fulfilling their Rock and Roll dream. This time the newly arrived band has come all the way from Greece, a first for any band from the Birthplace of Civilization. These Greeks have a major advantage by coming here: they are getting non-stop radio airplay on the biggest alternative rock station in the country, the World Famous KROQ of Los Angeles. “This band is really good!” – Rodney Bingenheimer aka Rodney on the Roq via KROQ airwaves. Rodney Bingenheimer “The Prince of Punk”, is the legendary DJ who’s credited in the US for first playing and breaking The Sex Pistols, The Ramones, The Clash, Blondie, X, Social Distortion, Nirvana, The Offspring, and No Doubt (to mention but a few), discovered the Greek band by word of mouth a few weeks prior to their arrival and was the first to start spinning their demo on his iconoclastic “Rodney On The Roq” radio show, saying that their song “California” is a “hit”.

TOMMY GUERRERO “LIFEBOATS AND FOLLIES” TO RELEASE FEBRUARY 5TH AT CAFE DU NORD. Skateboard legend/prolific musician Tommy Guerrero has a new album, Lifeboats And Follies, and a new signature shoes with Vans Syndicate. Raised on the colorful and gritty streets of San Francisco and steeped in the dark brew formed by the perfect cultural storm where skateboarding, music and art smashed right into each other, Tommy Guerrero was destined for greatness of the soulful sort. Adapting to his hilly local environs with speed and style, TG was a bonafied pioneer of modern street skateboarding, turning pro and traveling the world while still just a teenager. His casual flow was material for the skateboarding pantheon, and is endlessly compared to what would come out when he focused his attention on stringed things. The early four-track tunes he offered were heavily groove-based, with obvious blues, Latin and soul overtones, but as time and albums went by the music became more layered and eclectic, incorporating jazz, hip-hop and funk elements, as well. More than a decade of tirelessly working his craft has passed since, and has resulted in the album you now behold- “Lifeboats and Follies” is by far Guerrero’s most fully realized sonic collage. The tide of groove remains, but is formed by the far denser and complex interplay of an expanded quiver of instruments and sounds. The simplicity of Tommy’s early work was catchy, but the expansive compositional skill that has shown itself amongst the tracks here is cinematic in scope, offering a richer, more muscular tone and greater depth of emotion. The soup has been thickened, the fire is smoldering, and Tommy is sweating it out all night, every night. http://www.tommyguerrero.com/

Don Letts’ Out of Print Landmark Punk Documentary To Be Reissued On DVD via Shout! Factory. The 2-Disc Set Features Two Hours of Bonus Materials. In the mid-1970s, a revolution was ignited on the streets of New York and London. Almost overnight, punk shattered the status quo and continued to impact all future generations of youth culture. A must-have for fans of punk music, documentary aficionados and DVD collectors, the two-disc set of PUNK: Attitude is priced for everyone to own at $19.93. With a cast of historic and modern figures in popular culture, the documentary ventures beyond the hype and explores the way punk music redefined popular music and fashion while legitimizing an independent, do-it-yourself attitude that inspired an entire generation of musicians, filmmakers, poets, photographers, fashion designers and graphic artists. “With hindsight we are able to recognize it as part of an ongoing movement of counterculture,” says filmmaker Don Letts adding, “It is in that spirit that I made this film, not as a nostalgic look back, but rather a way to move forward. After all, if it happened before, it can happen again.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XI85jPbcps

THE BIG PICTURE : MARK MOTHERSBAUGH + SHEPARD FAIREY – January 22-February 19, 2011. Subliminal Projects and The Art of Elysium’s Elysium Project are pleased to present a two-person show featuring work by artist, pop culture icon, and DEVO frontman Mark Mothersbaugh and artist Shepard Fairey. This exhibition focuses on their work as artists and philanthropists. As artists, Mark and Shepard create work that demand the viewer’s attention, drawing them into a world where scale is pushed to the forefront. From several feet back, Shepard’s work tells one story while, up close, the intricate patterning tells another. The symbols in a Shepard print provide a contextual framework and the elaborate detailing reflects a careful attention to craft. Mark’s creative process begins on a small scale. His postcard-size illustrations and paintings often serve as the initial step in his creative process, from which he then pulls imagery for his larger work. These highly personal postcards are created on an intimate scale and, once enlarged into large-format works, the viewer is invited to step into Mark’s whimsical world. In both cases, it is the carefully thought out details that make The Big Picture. These two artists are keenly aware of The Big Picture when committing to a charitable cause. Their influential roles as tastemakers and cultural icons serve as a bright spotlight on the charity they choose to support. Thanks to their dedication to The Art of Elysium, both artists help bring attention to the charity’s mission, thus enriching the lives of gravely ill children in the Los Angeles serviced by the charity. Shepard Fairey, the 2010 Art of Elysium Visionary, and Mark Mothersbaugh, the 2011 Art of Elysium Visionary, are celebrated in this exhibition for their art and their charitable spirits. The Art of Elysium is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1997 to support artists and provide relief for medically disabled and hospitalized children. This dual mission has grown into a full-circle program with the charity providing a professional platform for artists and, in exchange, artists volunteer their time and talent to children with serious illnesses. We provide artistic workshops in the following disciplines: acting, art, comedy, fashion, music, radio, songwriting and creative writing. We believe there is a powerful and mutual exchange of hope and appreciation that occurs when artists share their time and talent with children battling serious medical conditions. Today, the charity has offices in Los Angeles and New York and holds workshops for over 40,000 children a year. Elysium Project is The Art of Elysium’s platform where contemporary art intersects with philanthropy. We are committed to supporting emerging, mid-career and established artists through discerning art exhibitions, public art initiatives and special events. Elysium Project simultaneously raises funds and creates the infrastructure to ensure that medically disabled children have access to quality educational and therapeutic arts experiences. http://www.subliminalprojects.com/

A DEEPER SHADE OF BLUE – Master surf film maker Jack McCoy ventures into a new realm with A Deeper Shade of Blue. This is not a surf movie, it’s a film about surfing’s deepest roots: in the subconscious; in ancient lore; in the craft of surfboard building; in man’s perpetual quest for a joyful relationship with the natural world. In eleven interwoven chapters, today’s leading surfers are linked to those who came before, for a deeper appreciation of what it means to be a surfer and the soulful underlying power of modern surf culture. This is a big picture of a memorable story, beautifully told. It is a film about feeling good to be alive… and it will make you feel good. Full information at http://www.adeepershadeofblue.com
