Exposure returns to San Diego

PRESS RELEASE:

The top female skateboarders in the world will put their skills on display in San Diego as EXPOSURE: A Women’s Benefit Event returns for a third year with the mission of promoting and progressing women’s skating as well as raising awareness for domestic violence.

The biggest all-female skateboarding competition in the world, EXPOSURE takes over the Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA in Encinitas on Saturday, November 8, 2014. The event runs from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and admission is FREE for spectators.

The action-packed day is highlighted by professional and amateur competitions such as the Urban Remedy Bowl Bash and the PTA Vert Competition. In addition, attendees can participate in FREE all-ages/abilities Learn-to-Skate with XS and Sambazon Yoga clinics. EXPOSURE also features a vendor village, an autograph signing session, opportunity drawings and a silent auction.

EXPOSURE presents athletes with an avenue to pursue their passions and succeed in the sport.

“I was able to go to EXPOSURE last year for the first time,” said women’s action sports rock star Lyn-z Adams Hawkins Pastrana. “It was so cool for me to see how many young girls are coming up in the skate world and know that things like this event are what will secure a future for my daughter if she chooses to skate like me! It’s a beautiful thing to see girls pushing the sport.”

EXPOSURE draws an international field with competitors ages five to 45 coming from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan and all over the United States. Past skaters have included Lizzie Armanto, Allysha Bergado, Amelia Brodka, Karen Jonz, Mimi Knoop, Julz Lynn, Gaby Ponce, Alana Smith and Nora Vasconcellos, to name a few.

History was made at EXPOSURE 2012 as Smith, the youngest-ever X Games medalist, became the first female to land a McTwist (inverted 540 spin) in competition. Armanto is a two-time Pro Vert winner at EXPOSURE and will be gunning for a three-peat this year. On the amateur side, Arianna Carmona has been ruling at EXPOSURE, topping the vert and bowl fields in 2012 and 2013. She’ll be moving up to the Pro division this year.

“The most progression I have seen in modern day female skateboarding has consistently occurred at EXPOSURE,” said Ponce, a gold medal winner at both the X Games and Dew Tour.

On hand to sign autographs in 2013 were big names like Mitchie Brusco, Cara-Beth Burnside, Pierre-Luc Gagnon (PLG), Hawkins Pastrana, Andy Macdonald, Danny Mayer, Austin Poynter, Tom Schaar and Adam Taylor.

EXPOSURE will once again partner with Carol’s House, a shelter for survivors of domestic violence run by Community Resource Center in Encinitas. Carol’s House provides residents with comprehensive social services to facilitate transition to healthier, happier and safer lives. EXPOSURE donates a portion of its proceeds to Carol’s House while helping raise awareness for an issue that impacts everyone, not just women.

“With a large gap in government funding for domestic violence programs in San Diego this year, we couldn’t be more appreciative and thankful for the EXPOSURE event,” said Paul B. Thompson, Chief Executive Officer of Community Resource Center. “Our Carol’s House program and comprehensive domestic services continue to change lives for those who have suffered abuse. Because of community members and events like EXPOSURE, we receive critical support we need to continue our mission.”

EXPOSURE comes to the Encinitas YMCA for the first time this November. Recently renovated, the 37,000 square foot skate park is home to the 2003 X Games vert ramp and has seen its fair share of pros come through, including locals Tony Hawk and Shaun White.

“We are really looking forward to hosting EXPOSURE this year,” said YMCA Skate Park Director Heather Tate. “It is exciting to see the growth of female athletes in the skate community.”

Legendary skater Mike McGill, inventor of the McTwist, has committed to judging this year along with Aaron Astorga, Adrian Demain and Jean Rusen. As always, Dave Duncan will be calling all of the action and hyping up the crowd on the mike.

New this year, EXPOSURE will collaborate with Tony Hawk’s RIDE Channel to produce a video recap of the event.

EXPOSURE recognizes and thanks its current 2014 sponsors: True Nature Healing Arts, Planes Trains and Automobiles, Urban Remedy, Neal Mims Skate Academy, Camp Tanuga, XS Helmets, Bronze Buffalo Foundation, MC Construction Management Incorporated and Sambazon.
