Etienne Archila – Juice Magazine State of Skate Interview

Name: Etienne Eden Archila “ET”
Hometown: Albuquerque, New Mexico
Age: 24 revolutions around the sun.
Sponsors: NMX Sports, W.S.B. Wounded Knee Skateboards.

What set-up are you riding right now?
I am currently riding a Wounded Knee Skateboard “Sitting Bull” with 159 Dressen Independent trucks, Spitfire Formula 4 58mm wheels, Bronson bearings, Mob Grip and Independent hardware.

What’s the most fun DIY, skater-built or renegade spot that you’ve skated lately?
The best skater-built bowl I’ve ever fell in is the “Disco bowl” built by East Coast Ramp Design.

Have you ever built something to skate?
My crew (W.S.B.) held a street style competition and, for the first place prize, we fabricated flat ground rails out of steel piping and angle iron at different sizes to fit age ranges.

Who do you like to skate with these days?
I usually skate alone, but any day out with the boyz is always killer!

Best skate graphic you have seen lately?
I dig the graphics by American Nomad and all of the Wounded Knee Skateboards graphics!

Best thing you’ve ever skated in a skatepark and what skatepark was it?
Personally, I loved the kidney bowl at Power Inn/ Granite skatepark in Sacramento, California.

Favorite skateboarders of all time?
Who are my favorite skateboarders of all time? It’s all a matter of perspective, but Jay boy for sure! Jim Murphy with that raw style, still charging shit like nothing! Chris Gregson with that tech wizardry and Jared Bolen a.k.a. Spacoli for the hometown homie.

Is there anything that hasn’t been built to skate yet that you’d like to see built?
That’s a good one, I would like to see a vert ramp built in Albuquerque. That’s a rarity here for sure.

Best road trip you ever took?
One of the best and memorable road trips I’ve taken was to the first One Gathering Skate for Life skateboarding competition in downtown Denver held by the Stronghold Society. It was a 3-day trip where the second day was the day of the competition. On the way there, we stopped in Trinidad, Colorado. With no warm up, I charged the snake run to the deep end where I blasted a sketchy fsa. As I was going in, my front foot was barely hanging on by the toes, and I heel scraped straight to my skull… Good times!

Are there any skate-related charities that you support?
Yes. I work and volunteer with NMX Sports and W.S.B. which are the Westside Boyz. We take impoverished youth around the city every Sunday, weather permitting, to skateparks, street spots and even the ditches. Through NMX Sports, we hold a Bomb Lomas (Lomas is a main street in Albuquerque) event where we skateboarders hire local police to close off Lomas 1.5 miles atop the hill from our biggest skatepark called Los Altos, which then we bomb down to a Game of S.K.A.T.E. and best trick contests. All free events.

What music have you been listening to?
I listen to weird music… Behold… The Arctopus, Naked City, Art Blakey, Sleep Terror, Psyopus, Cynic, Death, and, of course, Black Sabbath. All of these bands are in my CD rotation in my car.

What do you consider the responsibilities of a professional skateboarder?
I consider the responsibilities of a professional skateboarder, but I don’t know what they are? I’d say don’t sell out.

Which skate shops do you support?
Silver Skateshop. All other shops here carry name brand shit not run by skateboarders like Nike and shitty shit like that.

Favorite skate photo of all time?
Definitely when Danny Way drops from the Hard Rock guitar into that ramp.

What is your take on girls skateboarding?
Rad!!! That’s my take. The girls are keeping the boys honest. Can’t gap a channel to invert? Let me show you how.

What skateboarding memorabilia do you have that means the most to you?
It has to be my Juice Mag work man’s shirt that I got from Dan after hitting a ditch in Hollywood that I believe was called Bronson ditch.

Who contributes the most to your local skate scene?
Definitely NMX Sports.

Top three favorite skate tricks?
Crailslide, lien to disaster and egg plants!

Do you think skateboarding should be in the Olympics?
No!!! Keep that shit underground. Support small companies. Support local shops and hold events for the kids in your hometown. That’s what it should be about.

What is your proudest moment in skateboarding so far?
I’d have to say my proudest moment was finishing this interview with integrity.

ABOUT THE JUICE MAGAZINE STATE OF SKATE:

When we started Juice Magazine 22 years ago, you could count the number of skateparks on one hand and grindable pool coping was mostly a distant memory. Now there are thousands of skateparks all over the world, along with a vast quantity of DIY spots built to skate. In 1993, the majority of skateboarders listened to punk rock or hip hop exclusively. Now skateboarders listen to almost every kind of sound created. Two decades ago, skateboarding related charities were non-existent. Today, there are numerous non-profits giving back to skateboarding in many ways. One of the most important differences between now and then is that, 22 years ago, there was a clear division between old school and new school skateboarding. Now that wall of separation has followed the same path as the Berlin Wall, allowing for an unprecedented unification of skateboarders all over the globe. Great strides have been made for girls that skate as well as the acceptance of skate history and long overdue recognition for skateboarding’s pioneers and its artifacts. At the same time, the current generation of skateboarders is taking skateboarding to new heights, previously unimaginable. As the landscape of the skateboarding industry changes on a daily basis, and the topic of skateboarding in the Olympics rears its head once again, along with the disturbing subject of who controls skateboarding being tossed about by corporate entities, we decided it was time to take a good look at the State of Skate. We asked 20 questions to 100 skateboarders, ages 8 to 58, and found that skateboarding is as diverse as the skateboarders that are addicted to it, no one controls skateboarding except skateboarders, and the State of Skate is savage and strong. Now get out there and skate tough!

JUICE MAGAZINE STATE OF SKATE features interviews with 100 skateboarders including: Tony Alva, Dave Hackett, Chris Strople, Duane Peters, Steve Olson, Dave Duncan, Steve Alba, Tony Magnusson, Pat Black, Jesse Martinez, Bill Danforth, Jim Murphy, Ric Widenor, Lester Kasai, Glen Charnoski, Bryan Pennington, Peter Furnee, Jeremiah Risk, Ryan Smith, Jason Jessee, Omar Hassan, Cam Dowse, Jen O’Brien, Depth Leviathan Dweller, Brett Roper, Travis Beattie, Chris Gentry, CW Dunn, Chris Albright, Charlie Wilkins, Cairo Foster, Pierre-Luc Gagnon, BJ Morrill, Dr. Lenore L.A.
