For Immediate Release – July 05, 2007 – Skateboarding Wild in the Streets of San Francisco… With a Police Escort!? – No one knew exactly what to expect yesterday for Emerica’s fourth annual Wild in the Streets. In the days leading up to the event, controversy was sparked, as Emerica fielded non-stop calls from an angry San Francisco Police Chief and a dozen or so other reporters who got wind of the event. On Monday, the Mayor of San Francisco called an emergency meeting with his police force to try and figure out how to handle thousands of skateboarders who were set to hit his city in undisclosed locations. It was a recipe for disaster in their minds… just what Emerica had in mind for an event such as this – raising awareness about skateboarding! At noon yesterday, close to a thousand skateboarders charged the streets of San Francisco and not one of them got a ticket. It seems that the police realized that Wild in the Streets is just a bunch of skateboarders who simply want to do one thing, skateboard and have fun. The police did the unexpected – they gave the Emerica skate team, led by Andrew Reynolds, their very own police escort. You don’t have to read that again, you read it right the first time: a police escort! It was definitely a memorable scene: skateboarding, having a great time and then, before you knew it, police cars and motorcycle cops were in the mix, too. No one knew what was going to happen, but this time, no hassling skateboarders or writing tickets–just a police escort to the final destination of 3rd and Army! Everyone was baffled! The group took off toward 3rd and Army as if their lives depended on it, and once they reached the spot, they were greeted with a hassle-free place to skate with the Emerica team for a few hours, much needed refreshments and a large barbecue. It was a great 4th of July party – celebrating the freedom of skateboarding!
