SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., April 4, 2014 – SURFER Magazine’s 2014 Oakley Surf Shop Challenge hits the East Coast next week with the Southeast stop in Ponce Inlet, Fla. April 8th or 9th, the Mid-Atlantic stop in Nags Head, Outer Banks, NC, April 11th or 12th and the Northeast stop in Manasquan Inlet, NJ on April 14th or 15th.

The seven-event nationwide search will carry on throughout the next few months traversing the continent to identify the best teams from stops in Florida, North Carolina, New Jersey, Hawaii and three areas of California. Four-man teams (two surf shop pros and two shop employees) will be competing for a chance to win an all-expense-paid trip to the National Championship in Central America, an advertising spread in SURFER Magazine, and the coveted title and bragging rights of best surf shop in the country.

2014 reigning National Champ Sunrise Surf Shop has been the dominant force in the Southeast with an untarnished record of five straight regional victories and two National Championships (2006 and 2013) under its belt. But who will take the title in 2014, is still anyone’s bet.

Invited Southeast teams:
Sunrise Surf Shop
IWS (Deerfield)
Surf Station
Catalyst Surf Shop
Nomad
Aqua East Surf Shop
Salty Dog Surf Shop
Red Dog Surf Shop
Curl
Ocean Magic
Rip Curl New Smyrna
Waterboyz
Surf Central
BC Ft Lauderdale
Surf World
IWS (Lake Worth)
The Compound
Maui Nix

The Mid-Atlantic’s Sweetwater has amassed a covetable history in the Oakley Surf Shop Challenge with several regional titles and two National Championships, but their record is not undisputed.  Wave Riding Vehicles stole the regional win in 2012 and could do it again.

Invited Mid-Atlantic teams:
Whalebone Surf Shop
Sweetwater Surf Shop
Outer Banks Boarding Company
Coastal Edge (VB)
Wave Riding Vehicles (Virginia Beach)
Freedom Surf Shop
Annex Surf Supply
17th Street Surf Shop
Surf and Adventure Co.
Duck Village Outfitters
Coastal Edge (KDH)
Wave Riding Vehicles (Kitty Hawk)
Surf City Surf Shop

Last year saw Asbury’s 7th Street Surf Shop battling to the top in the Final against three Heritage Surf & Sport teams in the Northeast regional qualifier.  And 7th Street didn’t disappoint in Bali, earning an honorable runner up position at the National Championship.  But Heritage has been a dominant force in the Northeast with at least four regional titles under their belt and will be back in 2014.

Invited Northeast teams:
Inlet Outlet Surf Shop
Farias Surf Sport (2)
Farias Surf Sport (1)
Heritage Surf & Sport (Ocean City)
Heritage Surf & Sport (Sea Isle City)

About Surf Shop Challenge
Originally conceived to provide a fun and competitive format for the hardcore surf shop riders, the SURFER Shop Team Challenge was one of the most popular and exciting Southern California contests of the early 1980s.  Through the years the contest has evolved, growing into seven qualifying regional events around the country and culminating in a national championship abroad. The underlying principles, however, have remained the same. The Oakley Surf Shop Challenge is still about giving back to the shops, the true backbone of the industry and the heart of the sport of surfing. Each year the competition level rises, the stakes become greater and the prizes become bigger.
