CRANE SKATEPARK OPENS IN ST. HELENA – The city of St. Helena and the St. Helena Chamber of Chamber announce the official opening of Crane Park Skatepark, a highly anticipated skatepark that was built with the funds raised by the St. Helena Skatepark Inc., a nonprofit organization which raised $925,000 from the private residents of St. Helena. Crane Park Skatepark is the second structure to be built specifically for both locals and visiting kids and families alike (a refurbished teen center will be opening on October 15). ‘We are thrilled to offer a new and exciting spot for kids to safely skate, though word on the street is that parents are also coming out to experience the skatepark,’ said Nancy Levenberg, president/CEO of the St. Helena Chamber of Commerce. ‘The designers, Seattle-based firm Grindline, are avid skateboarders themselves which clearly made a difference in the technical design which is drawing skating enthusiasts from well outside the Napa Valley.’ Though frequently viewed as a sophisticated wine country destination for worldwide travelers, St. Helena also exemplifies the spirit of small-town America, with a vibrant population that values its culture and heritage. X PARK CONTEST – ‘Our local park has been shut down for over a year due to terrible management and a total disconnect from the skateboarding community. I couldn’t take it anymore and quit my job at Ford. I contacted the management and covinced them to let me rebuild and fix the park to operating order and to let me manage it. The locals have come out in droves to help. We’ve set over 21000 screws, patched, and painted and fixed the place up pretty well.I’ve been skating for over 25 years and haven’t seen anything like this. I’m so stoked to be a part of this. We’re throwing a contest to raise money for surface and lights. So far Ford is sending out a Roush Mustang for display and Harley is sending some bikes. A gaming bus is coming in and there’s going to be a gaming contest as well. We’re expecting over 500 people to show up and 100 to compete. KATIN PRO/AM TEAM CHALLENGE RETURNS TO HUNTINGTON BEACH JAN. 12-17, 2010 – The legendary Katin Pro/Am Team Challenge is set to return to the north side of the Huntington Beach Pier, for two days of camaraderie-driven competition. More than $28,500 in cash and prizes will be on the line for both individuals and teams. 2010 WORLD JUNIOR SURFING CHAMPIONSHIP will be held in New Zealand, one of the World’s most unique surfing destinations. The Junior Champs will be held at Piha Beach, a beautiful black sand beach famous for its large waves, just 45 minutes drive from downtown Auckland. The event will begin on January 20, 2010, at the peak of the Kiwi summer. New Zealand is one of the world’s most rewarding surfing spots with quality waves, plenty of choice and relatively few surfers. The main source of swell for both the North and South Islands is from the low pressure systems of the roaring forties, but New Zealand is fortunate to pick up swell from just about anywhere. For those used to fighting for a beach park and some room in the line up, surfing in New Zealand offers a very different experience. Parking is mostly free and being a country of only 4 million people there is plenty of room to catch the perfect wave.
