What the Hell is going on in Florida? They’ve got as many metalheads as retirees, so we talked to bassist Alex Webster to find out.
What is Cannibal Corpse?
We’re just a death metal band that formed in 1988.
There’s no meaning behind it?
Not really. We were a bunch of kids when we made the band and we all liked horror movies like “Night of the Living Dead” and “Dawn of the Dead”
Why do so many death metal bands come out of Florida? Is it the humidity?
It’s kinda weird but a lot of death metal bands ended up in Tampa, like the big hair rock guys end up in Los Angeles and Hollywood.
Do you guys hang out with Deicide?
We know them, our drummer knows their drummer.
Have you guys ever burned a upside down cross on your forehead?
No,(laughing) we don’t. We’re one of the more normal bunch of people, considering what we write about. None of us even have tattoos except for George and none of us have body piercings or anything.
Where do you guys get the ideas for your songs?
Well, the lyrics are a combination of horror movies and stuff I see on the news or ‘80s documentaries about serial killers.; everything we’ve ever done is fiction.
How many of you guys worship Satan?
No, none of us are really into it. I know guys that are. It’s fun though and it’s part of the death metal imagery.
What do you think of King Diamond?
I never really liked the higher vocals that much but I give him respect for being a metal person and it’s cool he’s still around trying to do stuff. He does what he’s good at.
Does George sound like the Cookie Monster even when he talks?
Well, he sounds normal, but he does have a crackly voice. He is a big boy with a big voice. He’s got one of the more authentic sounding cookie monster voices if you compare him to other Death Metal singers.
