Michael Arthur King, 54, passed away suddenly on Saturday, July 26, 2008. A native Floridian, Mike began skateboarding in the late 1960′s and became one of the east coast’s early pioneers of the sport. He made his mark in skateboarding in the early 1970′s skating the infamous Haulover underpass in North Miami Beach. Mike King is survived by his wife Maria, sons Chris, Richard, and Patrick, and daughter Michelle. His funeral service was held on Friday, August 1, 2008 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Palm Bay. In lieu of flowers, an education fund has been set up. Donations can be made out to Patrick S. King c/o Riverside National Bank, 4625 Babcock St.NE, Palm Bay, FL 32905.

SOURVEIN sign to Candlelight Records – Candlelight Records today confirms the signing of North Carolina-based sludge/doom metal band Sourvein. The popular five-piece on tour now through August 11 have recorded a special/limited edition EP titled Imperial Bastard which will see domestic release on September 30. It will be followed by the band’s Billy Anderson-produced full-length label debut currently planned for release in early 2009. Formed in 1993, Sourvein relocated to Cape Fear, North Carolina after Hurricane Katrina ravaged their long-time home base. ‘SK8OLOGY: Fine Art on Skateboards’ – ISM: a community project presents an exhibition that combines skateboard counter culture with the world of fine art. On Saturday August 23, 2008, at 7 p.m. the ISM: gallery will be hosting an exhibition showcasing over 100 creative deck canvases from some of today’s most exciting artists and professional skaters. Contributions from Jason Lee, Mike Shinoda, Chris Pastras, Danny Gonzalez, and Nathan Pratt will be displayed: along with pieces from Audrey Kawasaki, Aaron Jasinski, Blaine Fontana, Brian Viveros and Joshua Clay. Contributing artists and professional skaters are donating their creative deck canvases to raise awareness and resources in an effort to support Now That You Know, a non-profit organization that helps provide ambitious girls from developing countries a secure environment for learning and growth. The ISM: gallery is located in the Koo’s Art Center at 540 East Broadway in Long Beach. The exhibit will be on display at the ISM: gallery for one month before it travels to San Diego in September. NEW YORK SURF FILM FESTIVAL DROPS IN TO TRIBECA CINEMAS SEPTEMBER 26-28th 2008 – The inaugural year of the New York Surf Film Festival will be held at Tribeca Cinemas on September 26th-28th, 2008. The submissions deadline is June 25th, 2008. The New York Surf Film Competition is open to independently produced feature-length and short films in the surf genre. SECOND ANNUAL SEA PADDLE NYC SLATED FOR AUGUST 18th – WHITE WATER EVENING EVENT TO RAISE MONEY FOR AUTISM AWARENESS – The White Water Gala will take place on Saturday, August 16, with the SEA Paddle NYC event occurring on Monday, August 18. The White Water Evening is a white themed event held on an ocean front estate in Monmouth Beach, NJ with all proceeds going to autism charities and SEA. The event features great live music and an open bar catered by top local restaurants. There will be a silent auction with donations pouring in from local residents including rockers Bon Jovi. Joel Tudor, Gerry Lopez and Darrick Doerner are just some of the surf legends already confirmed to participate in this years event. The Paddle will start at 9am on Monday August 18th at Pier 1 South Street Sea Port.
