POOL RULES ART SHOW

HOSOI NEWS – Quiksilver has announced that the legendary Christian Hosoi and the rest of the Quiksilver skate team will tour the country premiering the new documentary ‘Rising Son, The Legend of Skateboarder Christian Hosoi.’ The eight-city tour will feature free theater and outdoor screenings of the film as well as demos and signings by Hosoi, Arto Saari, Stefan Janoski, Omar Hassan, Reese Forbes, Kyle Leeper, Dylan Reider, Omar Salazar, Eric Fletcher, and others. This is truly a Quiksilver happening marked by many firsts. The tour will be Hosoi’s first national tour since being released from prison in 2004. It will be the first time in over 10 years that fans will be able to see Hosoi back where he belongs: on a skateboard. And it will be the first time Quiksilver’s entire skate team, including the hottest up-and-comers and the most established legends, will be skating in demos and undercover at the nation’s most famous skate spots. Most importantly, this will be the first time fans will be able to view ‘Rising Son, The Legend of Skateboarder Christian Hosoi’ and experience this inside look into the rise, fall and rebirth of a true skateboarding pioneer and legend. Directed by Cesario ‘Block’ Montano, written by Peter Alton, and narrated by Dennis Hopper, the 90 minute film will be released on DVD in November and will be available in skate shops, video stores, and other better entertainment distributors around the world. www.quiksilver.com/risingson

DOWN FOR LIFE – a letter from Brian Kelly – Alabama skateboarding Pro Legend Pat Wachter contacted me about sponsoring a ‘Pro-Contest’ at Veterans Skate Park in Alabaster, Alabama. It’s been well over a decade since there was a professional skateboarding contest held in Alabama. Pat has personally offered $1000.00 for first place prize money. Pat has offered this generous contribution in an effort to return professional skateboarding to Alabama and to give back to an industry that allowed him to have the opportunities in his life and times as a pro-skateboarder. Pat Wachter’s generous sprit to give back the love and provide future opportunities for skateboarding is exactly the type of energy skateboarding could use more of. Of course, $1000 dollars wouldn’t get the attention of many in the professional ranks today, but it’s a great place to start. Please join us in our effort to bring professional skateboarding back to Alabama by contributing to the event and igniting a flame that has long lingered. All contribution’s our greatly appreciated and contributors will receive advertising at the event in an effort to help raise the prize money that would entice the professional skateboarding community. Best Regards, Brian Kelly – Ride Skateboards at Veterans Skate Park. http://www.rideskateboards.com

CHANNEL STREET SKATEPARK WHEEL – The Channel Street Skatepark Project was begun back in the Fall of 2002. City Officials in San Pedro, part of LA’s harbor area, had been promising a quality, concrete skatepark for several years, but nothing ever seemed to happen. All suggestions by local skateboarders were disregarded and instead plans were made to build a modular, plastic skatepark sometime in the future. Frustrated and tired of waiting around for an unchallenging ‘plastic’ skatepark, a group of San Pedro skateboarders began building their own skatepark on a neglected ‘eyesore’ piece of land located under the 110 freeway at Channel St. What started out as a small concrete quarter-pipe slowly blossomed into a compact, yet functional skatepark within the span of a year. Money for the project came from the pockets of the skateboarders themselves and generous community members. In the Fall of 2003, the skaters created the San Pedro Skatepark Association, incorporating as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization later that year. As it stands today, the Channel Street park is skated on a daily basis by skaters from San Pedro and the rest of planet Earth. The skateboarders continue to run the show, maintaining the park, building additional terrain, and raising funds to keep the place around. Your purchase of these limited edition Channel Street Project wheels is greatly appreciated, as you are helping keep a park built by skaters for skaters alive and kicking. Thank you and please go skate. Channel Street Locals. For more go to www.sanpedroskateparkassociation.org and www.dlxsf.com. Wheel is available in 53, 55 and 57, in September 2006

CBGB To Close On Halloween 2006 – The New York Daily News is reporting that after a long and nasty rent fight, the owner of the legendary rock club CBGB agreed yesterday to move out of its grungy East Village site next year. ‘I guess money talks. That’s the name of the game,’ said Hilly Kristal, who opened the dank punk mecca in 1973. ‘We tried our best.’ CBGB, which gave bands like the RAMONES and TALKING HEADS a start, will leave its home on the Bowery next Halloween. Kristal is hoping to move the club to a new spot on the lower East Side and has looked at several spaces. But he also is considering opening a namesake joint in Las Vegas and is negotiating with deep-pocketed partners. ‘I’m trying to stay in New York, but New York is expensive,’ Kristal said. The Bowery Residents’ Committee, a nonprofit homeless-support group, owns the building housing CBGB and has long maintained that Kristal was paying far too little rent. ‘[We] can now concentrate on helping the needy and homeless of New York City’ said Executive Director Muzzy Rosenblatt.

Although the members have stayed active in bands such as Quicksand, Civ, Rival Schools and Walking Concert, it’s obvious that there is a lot of excitement surrounding Gorilla Biscuits that people can’t wait to be a part of, especially seeing the original lineup of the band. Joining GB on this tour will be Comeback Kid and, on select dates, the infamous Murphy’s Law. For more info go to www.revelationrecords.com.
