MIKE ROGERS NEWS – “Dear Friends of Mike Rogers (M.R.), Hello. This is a brief letter to let you know what is going on with Mike. He had cancer as a child, 25 years ago. The cancer has come back. He is being treated at Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital in New York City. He chose this hospital because the doctors are among the most experienced in the world. He can expect a stay of at least two months. The surgery will be performed by a team of four: a head and; neck cancer surgeon, a neurosurgeon, a plastic surgeon, and a radiation doctor who will implant a device which will deliver radiation during this procedure and at a later date. They expect the surgery to be finished after 16 hours. The date scheduled is Sept 3rd. The type of cancer is a sarcoma. We will not know which type of sarcoma until after the procedure is complete. I think they are all pretty rare. The location is in the sinus and eye area. Mike will not look the same when he returns home. The goal of the surgery is to remove all of the cancer. The doctors get one chance with Mike. If anyone can make it through and come out skating, it will be MR! Friends are just beginning to plan a benefit at the YMCA Oelsner Skatepark in West Palm Beach, Florida. The event will not happen until November 2003. They want to coordinate it with a big skate event that is taking place in Ft. Lauderdale in November (Hopefully, bringing the pro skaters to the YMCA) If you would like information, want to help, or have any good ideas, please contact Abby Gresko at 561-254-5153. In addition to the trauma he is facing, financial pressures exist for Mike. He had to cash in his YMCA Retirement fund, which was minimal. He filed for unemployment, but cannot benefit because he is not employable. He has applied for Social Security Disability. They said it takes 6 months to receive benefits, so he will get those benefits in 4- 5 months. Any contribution would make things easier for Mike during this time of hospitalization and recovery. All cards and/or donations can be mailed to : Mike Rogers 37 Mews Lane South Orange, New Jersey 07079 c/oAimee Meyers You can email Mike at mrskateshop@aol.com. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Please contact me if you wish. I will be staying outside of the city in NJ with my cousin until Mike can come home. Sincerely, Jill Gresko.” Jill626@netscape.net (561) 346-6549

Chris Mearkle (East Coast Ramps) is building another skatepark in Martha’s Vineyard. Plans are underway to include some bowl action with concrete sculpting wizardry by the one and only Sloppy Sam. Stay tuned for more.

SURF CULTURE: The Art History of Surfing – San Jose Museum of Art – August 16-November 2, 2003 – For many, the very notion of an ‘art history of surfing’ suggests an oxymoron – how could such a popular past-time have anything to do with serious art? Yet this exhibition sets out to prove otherwise. As New York Times art critic Chris Dixon notes, ‘The exhibit is ambitious, covering the history of surfing – in paintings, posters, photographs, film and artifacts – from ancient Peru and Polynesia to the 21st century. It features artists who surf and surfers who make art, pop icons like Gidget and serious works that struggle with the meaning of American colonialism.’ Surf Culture offers an overview of the technology, fine art and kitsch, myth-making and social commentary, personal expression and mass marketing and concludes with the exploration of the corporate side of surf culture. All of the artists presented in this exhibition have achieved prominence in the art world, or popular culture, or both. Among those who will be represented in the exhibition are Ashley Bickerton, Sandow Birk, Jeff Divine, Craig Kauffman, Rick Griffin, Kevin Ancell, Rex Brandt and Billy Al Bengston. Although there have been exhibitions in the past that made the connection between contemporary art and surfing, none of them have been comprehensive, with many historical works and numerous artists–nor have they included the memorabilia associated with surfing. Organized by the Laguna Art Museum, Surf Culture includes 100 works. San Jose will be the only Northern California venue for this exhibition, which also traveled to The Contemporary Museum in Honolulu, Hawaii. The connection between art and surfing reaches back 3,000 years to Peru, where some of the world’s first historians carved bas-reliefs of surfers. Works in the exhibition refer to several centuries of art. Sandow Sandow Birk’s paintings are recreations of nineteenth century artworks, such as Washington Crossing the Delaware by Emmanuel Gottlieb Leutze, however, the figures in Birk’s works have been transformed from soldiers into surfers painted in vibrant hues. Kevin Ancell’s hula girls recall the kitschy tiki dolls of the 50s, but they now wield M-16 assault rifles and grenades, symbols of American imperialism. Some artists illustrate the more physical impact of surf-related inventions by using materials like fiberglass – a synthetic that revolutionized the construction of utility boards. Other works suggest a more subtle correlation, such as the meditative tone of Robert Irwin’s discs that mirror the transcendence surfers often feel while immersed in the ocean. The last forty years have witnessed the explosion of surf culture as a lifestyle or commodity. Surfer Magazine, Gidget, and the Beach Boys defined a healthy chunk of pre-hippie culture, and psychedelic posters of the late 60s were heavily influenced by surf-style designer John Van Hamersveld and Surfer Magazine/Zap Comix veteran Rick Griffin. The following decades saw the surfer image plastered on billboards and glossy ads, so that a kid from Kansas who had never seen the beach could cop a surfer style with some Quicksilver shorts and Oakley shades. The exhibition is accompanied by a 240-page full color book designed by David Carson, co-published and distributed internationally by Gingko Press, with essays by pop writer Deanne Stillman, anthropologist Ben Finney, guest curators Tyler Stallings and Craig Stecyk, and Laguna Art Museum director Bolton Colburn (a former U.S. amateur surfing champion.) Tom Wolfe’s memorable essay, ‘The Pump House Gang,’ (1968) is also reprinted. Tickets: Free. Museum Hours: Tuesday – Sunday: 11am – 5pm. Closed Monday. Info Phone: 408-271-6840 – San Jose Museum of Art 110 South Market Street San Jose, CA 95113
