TONY HAWK FOUNDATION NEWS – In a survey of law-enforcement officials from across the U.S., officers report that public skateparks have had a positive impact on youth in their communities, contributed to a reduction in skate-related trespassing, and facilitated more positive interaction between cops and kids. Conducted by the Tony Hawk Foundation in 2009, over 100 officers were interviewed from communities where the Foundation has contributed to establishing a free, public skatepark. Ninety percent responded favorably when asked if they considered their skatepark an important community asset. Most also reported that they’ve had no major incidents at their skateparks, and almost half credit the skatepark for reducing incidents of youth crime in their communities. Federally registered nonprofit organizations, municipalities, or public agencies may apply for grants from the Tony Hawk Foundation. SUICIDAL TENDENCIES NEWS – The First Ever SUICIDAL TENDENCIES DVD – Since their beginnings in Venice, CA in the early 80s, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES have led the charge in the skate punk/thrash metal movement, consequently influencing an entire generation of bands along the way. Fontana Distribution is proud to announce Live At The Olympic Auditorium, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES first ever DVD release! The DVD will street January 26, 2010 via the bands own imprint, Suicidal Records. The approximately 80-minute DVD features 16 tracks including ST classics Institutionalized, War Inside My Head, and Possessed To Skate and captures SUICIDAL in their most natural environment: Onstage, uncensored and ready to tear you to shreds. Elaborated ST founding vocalist Mike Muir, The band started getting emails from some crazy guy that always said, ‘I know you’ll probably think I’m crazy, but I’m not. I’m wanna book ST for a show and I got this idea…’. Well, one by one we shot down the ‘unique’ ideas until one time he emailed and said the Olympic Auditorium was being bought by a Korean Church. Shouldn’t it be sent off with a special last gig? The band agreed and then the work began. The promoter — Evel Dick Donato who went on to win Big Brother — tells a bit about the show, making of etc. on the intro. Lots of drama, none more than the day before the show when I woke up and couldn’t walk. But the show must go on and the back surgery would have to wait till afterwards. SUICIDAL recorded live at the Olympic Auditorium in front of 4,000 Cycos…but now you can enjoy it in the safety of your living room. http://www.suicidaltendencies.com

WORLD SURFING RESERVES MOVEMENT – Nine-time World Surfing Champion Kelly Slater joined National Surfing Reserves founder Brad Farmer to announce his endorsement for the World Surfing Reserves program, and that 2010 will be the year of global surf spot enshrinements. In announcing this historic year for surf-spot preservation, Slater stated, gThis is a pretty exciting thing for me to be a part of and support. Itfs almost mind-numbing that [WSR] hasnft happened yet, especially in Hawaii, the birthplace of surfing.h World Surfing Reserves seeks to identify and enshrine the most important and cherished surf areas around the world, in partnership with local surf communities. World Surfing Reserve (WSR) sites are nominated and selected based on four major criteria: quality and consistency of waves, importance to surf culture and history, environmental characteristics, and community support. Several surf areas in Australia, California, and Hawaii have been proposed for enshrinement as initial WSRs. These were selected from over 125 iconic beaches nominated from 34 countries. The nominations include sites like North Narrabeen and Manly Beach in Australia, Malibu and Santa Cruz in California, and Waikiki and Oahufs North Shore in Hawaii, in addition to many others around the world. Beyond its cultural and aesthetic significance, each WSR is a meeting of land and sea selected for the unique and salutary nature of its waves and natural setting. The dedication of each WSR seeks the protection of this coastal zone of waves and habitat from wanton destruction and exploitation – through no other mechanism but the positive force of appreciation and valuation. Farmer and Slater also announced the launch of a new NSR website http://www.surfingreserves.org, which offers access to this exciting new vision of respect and valuation to beach-lovers all over the world. This new site, combined with Save The Wavesf WSR site http://www.worldsurfingreserves.org provides further details on the global surfing reserves movement.
